Saint Dwynwen / St Dwynwen's Day

(0)
Celebrate St Dwynwen’s Day on 25 January with these 2 fun and flexible no prep puzzles about Saint Dwynwen / Santes Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of love and lovers. Although the crossword would need to be printed, the other puzzle can just be displayed on a screen and students can message you the answer. The zip file contains a True or False Hidden Word Puzzle and a Crossword Puzzle, plus solutions, all in PDF format. These activities work well as follow up work to an assembly, as part of a stand-alone lesson or as part of a longer topic. They could be used as starter tasks (if building on previous learning), as individual or group tasks to focus pupils’ own research, an informal assessment task at the end of a topic or mini-focus, early finisher tasks or engaging homework tasks. These would best suit Upper Key Stage 2 / KS2, early KS3 and other equivalents. The Hidden Word Puzzle includes 15 statements about St Dwynwen and St Dwynwen’s Day, which is the equivalent of St Valentine’s Day in Wales. Pupils must work out which ones are incorrect and then, using the grid at the bottom, rearrange the letters linked to the incorrect statements to find a word related to the subject of the puzzle. This is a very flexible resource, which works especially well to focus pupils’ own online research. All statements can be checked by looking through the first few websites that come up in internet searches. Children will practise reading comprehension skills and skimming and scanning strategies. They will also practise their digital literacy skills as they check facts, evaluating the reliability of websites used, ensuring they check more than one website etc. The solution to the puzzle, identifying and correcting the relevant statements, is included on a separate page. As versions of Dwynwen’s story can vary, the puzzles focus on details agreed on by several key websites. The crossword could be used with the same pupils as although there is some overlap between the two puzzles in the information covered, there are also details in each which do not appear in the other. No preparation is required, other than simply printing and copying. Two previews are provided, with a 4-page PDF document - containing the puzzles and their solutions - in the zip file. I hope your students enjoy using these puzzles. I would be grateful for a review if you get a spare moment. Thank you for your interest in my resources. Please visit FullShelf Resources for engaging, time-saving printables, activities and presentations to plan Primary (and some Secondary) Literacy / English, Maths / Numeracy and French lessons. I also have a growing collection of puzzles for special events, anniversaries and Social Studies.

French Calendar / Date Games

Quelle est la date? Beginners French KS2 / KS3 (Year 4, 5, 6 and 7) Printable Speaking Games for revision of calendar and date vocabulary: 10 Four in a Row game boards and a Snakes and Ladders Board for practising saying the date in French. These resources will help you plan multiple lessons at Key Stage 2 or Key Stage 3 (upper Primary and early Secondary and equivalents) for students beginning French or near beginners requiring revision of basic vocab and phrases. Originally made for UK schools, I have also added US date format versions of both resources. You can get these games with other French calendar resources (a substantial PowerPoint lesson presentation, bingo game, loop games, worksheets and puzzles) in this bundle: French Calendar (Le Calendrier) Bundle FOUR IN A ROW I originally created this to help pupils answer the French question 'Quelle est la date?' but there is no reference to French on the boards so they can also be used for Italian, Spanish, German and other languages. Pupils will practise calendar vocabulary - months (les mois), days of the week (les jours de la semaine) and numbers to thirty-one. Includes: 5 boards with the month and date 5 further boards with the month, date and day A fun language learning activity - ideal for a starter, early finisher task, main lesson consolidation work or as part of a bank of revision activities. Print in either A3 or A4 and laminate for regular use. Individuals or pairs play against each other, taking it in turns to roll a dice before choosing a date in the correct column (columns are labelled 1-6) to say in the target language. If correct, they could put their symbol or initial over it in a wipeable pen or cover it with a counter of a different colour to their opponent. The first player/team to get 4 in a row vertically, horizontally or diagonally is the winner. With 10 boards in total, they can swap with other pairs/groups when finished to have another game. SNAKES AND LADDERS Pupils play as per normal Snakes and Ladders, only they have to say the date they land on in French. The US date format version of the game is on page 2 of the file. Instructions are on page 3. Dividing with Multiples of 10, 100, 1000

A Maths starter game for KS2 Year 5 / Year 6 Division with multiples of 10, 100, 1000 Numeracy. This is a treasure hunt / scavenger hunt activity, an active printable mental maths team game, with differentiation, ideal as a whole class starter or plenary in Year 5 / Year 6 and early KS3. It can be played multiple times in a lesson or across several lessons as groups can use different card sets each time. Teams complete a treasure hunt-type chain of decimals calculations, followed by a ‘Find the Target Number’ mental maths challenge, using a mixture of the four operations. There are 54 double-sided cards, forming sets of 6 cards for 9 teams. A key feature is the chance to involve lower ability students in a fun whole class activity to give them a boost of confidence without it being obvious their calculations are less challenging (3 of the sets are at an easier level). Full instructions included, along with solutions. I have a collection of these Grab the Answers games, each one focusing on a different maths concepts. Click on the BUNDLE to explore more. Students collaborate on a treasure hunt type maths trail and when they’ve collected all 5 answers, they are given a target, which they must make using 3 given numbers. You can print and laminate the cards in batches of 3 sets, so if you don’t require them all, you needn’t print them. The cards should be printed double-sided (they’ve been laid out to facilitate this). I print by selecting the ‘2-Sided Short Edge (Top)’ option. However, if you can only print one-sided, print all the even-numbered pages, replace the paper, and print the odd-numbered pages on the back. Give each team their ‘Start’ card. Spread out all other cards, answer side up. You may wish to remove cards from any set not being used, although this is not necessary. On your signal, teams turn over their Start card and complete the calculation. Each team sends one person to collect the correct answer card, on the other side of which will be their next question and a letter to confirm which team it belongs to. Ensure teams immediately replace any cards not marked with their letter. The process continues until the team have answered all five calculations. On the other side of the final answer card will be a target number, which teams must make, using the numbers printed in boxes in the bottom right corner of 3 of their cards. Use all 3 numbers and only once each, using any of the 4 operations. The first to make their target number wins! One possible answer for each of the target challenges is printed on the solution cards. Please visit my store for many fun, time-saving maths activities: FullShelf Resources

Activities (a game, puzzles worksheets and word problem cards) for differentiated negative numbers lessons at Upper Key Stage 2 (KS2). It was originally designed for Year 5 and Year 6 (Y5 / Y6) and equivalents but could work for able Year 4 too. Includes 3 fun Hidden Word / Spot the Mistake Puzzles (and solutions), a 30-card Loop Game / Dominoes Set and 16 Word Problems Cards (8 multi-step and 8 more simple). PDF format. In Scotland, use for Primary 6 and 7 (and able Primary 5). PUZZLES An engaging alternative to worksheets, these Numeracy puzzles make ideal starter, early finisher or homework activities. There’s one on increasing and decreasing temperature (Celsius), one for simple subtraction calculations with mostly negative number answers and a more challenging puzzle featuring addition and subtraction of negative and positive integers. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups. Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a maths-related word is revealed after completing calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Students circle boxes containing errors. Then they assemble the letters from the circled boxes to reveal a maths word. There’s a further challenge question / task at the bottom of the page linked to the word. Pupils often forget or avoid checking their work so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work. LOOP CARDS / DOMINOES Fun group / whole class activity to consolidate adding and subtracting negative numbers, using phrases (‘reduce by’, ‘increase’, ‘difference between’ etc). Forms a continuous loop. WORD PROBLEM CARDS 8 Multi-Step Word Problem Cards and 8 more simple. Solutions can be printed back to back with question side for student self-checking or can be printed and made into separate cards if required. Consolidates understanding of negative numbers in the contexts of temperature (degrees Celsius), money / bank accounts and points in a sporting league. Work well as early finisher challenges. Separate pounds and dollars versions. Beginners KS2 / KS3 (Year 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8) French speaking games (2 sets of 40-card loop games/ follow me cards / dominoes) for revision of French calendar (le calendrier) vocabulary - dates, months (les mois), days of the week (les jours), as well as numbers to 31.   My FSL / MFL French basics resources and units suit students beginning French, near beginners (and intermediate learners for revision) in: * Upper Primary (Key Stage 2) - Year 4, 5, 6 (Y4 Y5 Y6) * Secondary (Key Stage 3) - especially Year 7 and 8 (Y7 / Y8) * Equivalents such as Grades 4, 5, 6, 7 and 8 Core French in Canada * May suit others, depending on experience   These resources will help you plan multiple lessons. Additional US format date versions are also now included. One set features the date and month, the other (which has different dates) also includes the day. This game works especially well as a fun activity to teach the difference between the two ways of answering the question Quelle est la date? (What is the date?), which depends on whether you are including the day: C'est samedi cinq avril C'est le cinq avril Another teaching point reinforced with this activity is the fact that days and months do not start with capital letters in French. Print and laminate the sets for repeated use. There is no start or end card in either set; they are continuous loops so you can start wherever you want. French Adjectives Les Adjectifs Activity

For MFL / FSL, KS3, KS4 or even adult language learners, this giant French Adjectives vocabulary crossword puzzle, is great for cover lessons, starters or early finishers activities or as an extension challenge activity after a focus on Les Adjectifs. Use this huge puzzle to revise and extend vocabulary. There are 116 words in the puzzle, all singular adjectives and a mixture of masculine and feminine spellings. PDF format - 16 pages. You could return to it over several sessions. This is low prep, great for collaboration, printable, differentiated, has an answer key, and there’s even an optional hidden sentence challenge! Best not used with absolute beginners, as it’s designed to review AND expand students’ existing vocabulary, to provide a challenge. Depending on experience and ability of students and level of support given, this can work with Key Stage 3 and 4 and beyond. Please click on the preview file to check suitability for your students. Fun: Giant crosswords are enjoyable to complete. Low prep: Great for sub lessons and busy times. Flexible: Can fill a whole lesson or more, or be completed over multiple days. Early finishers: Great as an early finisher activity or extension, maybe to be competed over several sessions. Collaboration: Although it can be used for individuals, it’s especially good for pairs or small groups. Differentiation: Alternative clue page & vocab support page. Challenge: Fun hidden sentence extension!   HOW TO DIFFERENTIATE THIS ACTIVITY: There are 2 versions of the clue sheets – one with just the word itself in English (to be translated into French) and an easier version with the first letter given. Choose whether to provide the alphabetical answer list, perhaps just to support certain students, or distribute it only when students have done as much as they can independently Consider using mixed-ability groups Decide whether to allow access to online or traditional dictionaries, perhaps later when students have completed as much as they can independently Consider whether to use the hidden sentence challenge version (students use a blank grid with stars printed on certain squares, and then put the letters together from the star boxes to spell out a hidden word). There are 2 versions of the recording sheet for this challenge, should you wish to use them, and separate answer keys Early finishers could be directed to online sources to check out the pronunciation of unfamiliar words Whatever you choose, I hope your students have as much fun completing it as I did compiling it! You might want to expand the crossword if using with larger groups but if you can’t, it will still work in standard size. YOU MIGHT ALSO LIKE: French KS2 / KS3 MEGA BUNDLE 1
