This lesson covers the some of defences used to prevent river flooding. It is ideal for any KS3 study of rivers or flooding however, it can be adapted for a low level GCSE group. Key facts about the lesson are: 1. The lesson starts with a recap of some of the effects of a river flooding and finishes with a crossword activity designed to recap the main flood defences learnt in the lesson. 2. There are two main new pieces of learning; one covers the different hard and soft defences used along some rivers and the other is a case study of the Thames flood barrier. 3. This lesson is strategies to manage hurricanes and flooding. It’s suited for both KS3 and a GCSE group. Key facts about the lesson are: The lesson start with an really good interactive starter task about the primary and secondary effects of hurricanes and floods. There is then analysis task that allows students to explore the 3 ps (predict, protect and prepare) of hazard management. Finally students are introduced to some examples of hard and soft flood defences for rivers. The lesson has a range of learning activities suitable to different types of learners; there are photos to make real the nature of a floods, an interactive task and a few activities to strengthen their analytical skills. The lesson was designed to introduce aspects of the new GCSE specifications at KS3 however, it has enough challenge to meet the learning needs of a GCSE group as well. This is a GCSE where the learning is focus on comparing constructive and destructive waves. The lesson will allow students to analyse the different types of waves and how they affect the coast differently. Key facts about the lesson are: 1. The lesson starts by exploring how waves affect the coast using the concepts swash and backwash. There is a great little activity that will allow students to differentiate between swash and backwash. The lesson then moves on to compare constructive and destructive waves. A very straightforward activity is used here; students will be able to access the information easily and the teacher can then focus on writing/exam response techniques here. The lesson will become analytical now where students have to apply the knowledge to three different scenarios. 3. The lesson is differentiated. There are visual aids including diagrams, images and a video clip. There are also challenge activities throughout to stretch students' understanding. There are some clever tasks that are designed to get students to apply their knowledge. This is key to doing well in the new GCSE specifications. 4.
