This lesson covers the different strategies used to manage river flooding. It’s suited for the new GCSE specification unit on rivers. However, the lesson is differentiated enough to be taught to a KS3 group. Key facts about the lesson are:
1. The lesson starts with an OS map skill activity and finishes with a crossword recapping the main flood defences learnt. There are two main new pieces of learning; one covers strategies that are used to forecast and respond to river flooding and the other covers the main hard and soft defences used as flood defences.
2. The lesson has a range of learning activities suitable to different types of learners; there are photos, map task, analytical tasks as well as lots of opportunities for discussion and debate.
3. The strength of this lesson is it’s differentiation. It was designed for the new GCSE specifications however, it was deliberately differentiated so that it could be used at KS3 to introduce students to the content and skills of GCSE geography.

This is a GCSE lesson on the economic trends of an emerging country. The case study of India is used. Key facts about the lesson are:
1. The lesson explores the changes in India’s GDP, GDP per capita, economic sectors and trade overtime and how these are affecting it’s development.
2. The lesson will generate lots of discussions on how the economy of a country works and what are the key economic trends associated with emerging countries.
3. The lesson is the second in a series of case study lessons on India’s development as an emerging economy. This is a requirement of the new GCESE specifications. However, it can be adapted for A-level studies as well.
4. The lesson is designed to focus students thinking and discussion skills through the use of graphs and data tables.

This is a GCSE lesson on sustainable management of tropical rainforests. Key facts about the lesson are:
The content covered by the lesson are; the concept of sustainable management of rainforests, some strategies used to management rainforests namely selecting logging, debt for nature swop deals, replanting, conservation, public education, international hardwood agreements (FSC) and ecotourism.

This is a GCSE lesson on top down and bottom up development strategies. Key facts about the lesson are:
1. The lesson explores the differences between top down and bottom up development projects.
2. The lesson analyses the pros and cons of top down and bottom up approaches to development.
3. The lesson uses two different case studies to develop students understanding of top down and bottom up approaches; High Speed 2 and Sparc India.

This is an assessment for a Hazardous earth component of Edexcel B GCSE. I’m sure it can be used for other exam boards as the hazardous earth unit is included in all geography specifications. Key facts about the assessment are:
The assessment is mainly comprised of short answer questions with one extended writing piece.
The assessment covers a range of marks from a 1 mark question to 8 mark question.
The assessment include source based questions, recall questions and a case study question.
The assessment examines the following content; global warming, the greenhouse effect/gases, natural and human causes of past climate change, evidence of the little ice age, features of tropical storms and the effects and response to tropical storms.
The paper uses command words use by the exam board.

This is a GSCE lesson on the causes and effects of sub-urbanisation and counter-urbanisation. The lesson can also be adapted for A level as well.

This is a KS3 / KS2 lesson on compass points. It is an excellent lesson to peak students’ interest in maps and to pass on map skills. Key facts about the lesson are:

This lesson is on the causes and effects of flooding. It’s suited for year 9s as well as a GCSE group. Key facts about the lesson are:
The lesson starts by using a video clip to introduce the definition and nature of floods. Then there is a task that help students to learn about the human and physical causes of floods. Finally the lesson explores the effects of floods using a couple of really engaging activities.
The lesson has a range of learning activities suitable to different types of learners; there are video clips and photos to make real the nature of floods. There is an animation clip to reinforce learning on the causes of floods. There is also an activity where students have to extract information from a still photo clip and a no commentary video clip. This task will really develop those interpretation skills that are key to a geographer.

This is a GCSE lesson on longshore drift. The lesson focuses on how longshore drift operates and how it affects sediments along the coast. Key facts about the lesson are:
1. The lesson starts with a video clip about longshore drift. It then moves on to a diagram and writing task on longshore drift. The next phase of the lesson is an analysis task where students use resources to explain the effect of longshore drift on sediments. This is a GSCE lesson on mega cities, primate cities and world cities. The lesson develops on the idea of urban hierarchy and introduce to students the idea of mega cities, primate cities and world cities. This is good foundation work for A level geography. Key facts about the lesson are:

2. It's well planned. It took me some time to get the right balance of activities and content into the lesson in a meaningful but using active learning ideas
