This baseline assessment allows Geography teachers to gain an in-depth understanding of pupils' strengths and weaknesses in this subject by assessing the six 'strands' above.
Marking is easy and straight-forward. Each section in the baseline assessment yields a 'Step' or Level once marked. There is the option of converting the 6 'Steps' or Levels into one overall National Curriculum Level (an Excel file with this formula is included). Alternatively, the results can be used with a KS3 Assessment Grid (included) to start to build a detailed pupil profile for each student. The baseline assessment can also be tweaked to give a numerical score, e.g. out of 100.
A high-quality resource from a current Head of Department and GCSE examiner
This baseline assessment has been piloted, fine-tuned, and then fully implemented across three different schools, resulting in a high-quality resource that can be used 'as is' or tailored to your needs. A mark scheme is included to provide further guidance, which could be particularly useful for non-specialist teachers. Order a copy now and get your department ready for your new cohort of Year 7 pupils.
Why is a baseline assessment important in Geography?
• In all schools, including selective schools, there will be a range of abilities entering Year 7.
• Pupils have vastly different experiences of Geography at KS1 and KS2.
• KS2 and CAT test scores, while a useful indicator of general ability, are not specific to Geography and do not show pupils' strengths and weaknesses in Geography.
• Baseline data is a useful tool to help departments review their curriculum provision at KS3 and to track individual pupil progress
