275 adjectives to describe a face for English Language Paper 1 Question 5
Inspired by the image of the old man in the 2018 AQA English Language exam, I have collated and categorised 275 words to describe a face onto a worksheet to help students with their descriptive writing.
Students found this useful in helping them to improve the precision of their characters descriptions for English Language Paper 1.
Planning Macbeth exam responses
Differentiated - 3 different versions of essay plans for Macbeth to use with different ability groups.
For ease of photocopying, I have created 6 exam questions on one A3 students. Each question has a planning grid for students to map out their ideas. Useful for final revision session.
Also contains 4 completed plans for students to convert into essays.
Great for revision lessons or for homework tasks.
Romeo Revision Flashcards 9-1 (Romeo and Juliet)
9 Romeo flashcards covering explanations for 27 quotations which cover different aspects of Romeo’s character. Includes a pdf version and an editable version in word.
I normally give students the blank versions of the cards and reveal the answers later in the lesson.

Lesson and resources to help students produce a high quality response on the character of Eva Smith.
Eva Smith essay planning sheet with answers for AQA 1-9 An Inspector Calls style question.
The planning sheet contains perceptive points with carefully selected quotations and space for students to make deeper insights into language and theme.
This is aimed at students with a target grade of 7-9.
There is also a PowerPoint version aimed at students with a target grade of 4-5.
Describing the weather in the style of Charles Dickens (KS2/KS3/KS4)
Starter: List words associated with rain.
Learning outcomes:
To identify features of Dickens’ style
To apply knowledge in a piece of descriptive writing
To evaluate against the success criteria
Next students examine the methods Dickens uses to describe the fog in an extract from ‘Bleak House’ and the snow in an extract from ‘A Christmas Carol’. There is differentiation so students of different ability can examine different methods used by the author.
Students must then try to write a paragraph in the same style about rain. There is a differentiated success criteria.
The plenary can be done in the form of peer and self assessment and has sentence stems linked to the success criteria.
Abuse of power in Animal Farm
Ideal to set as an assessment after reading the first 5 chapters.
Contains 3 carefully selected short extracts from chapters 2, 3 and 5.
Students analyse how power is abused in each extract and answer the overall question: who is worse the humans or the pigs?
There is a writing frame for students to follow to help analyse each extract and ensure they meet the criteria for A01, A02 and A03.
Ghosts Grade 9 Analysis in A Christmas Carol
Detailed lessons analysing the significance of the 4 ghosts in the novel.
A differentiated worksheet to invite students to explore the impact of each ghost in A Christmas Carol independently. A key extract is selected for each ghost and students answer the tough, tougher or toughest challenges.
Also includes a full lesson analysing the Ghost of Christmas Past extract in greater detail.

Includes learning outcomes, starter, differentiated plenary, comprehension questions and a main activity involving comparing Orwell’s ending with the ending in two film versions (links to the films are included). This is useful for exploring how the films attempt to rewrite history by changing the endings to suit the target audience.
Peer assessing GCSE poetry comparisons - prompt sheet (Power and Conflict theme)
A prompt sheet to help students to peer assess poetry comparisons against the marking criteria. I have used this with the AQA Power and Conflict poems; however, it can easily be adapted for other specifications.
Writing frame comparing Ozymandias and My Last Duchess Power and Conflict
2 differentiated writing frames to help students answer the following question:
Compare the ways the poets in My Last Duchess and one other poem (Ozymandias) present the power of pride. (30).
The tough version includes sentence starts for the initial conceptual comparisons while the tougher version offers more independence.
ROMEO AND JULIET REVISION SHEET QUOTATIONS
This A3 revision sheet revises key quotations for 6 key characters and 4 key themes in the play. There are also notes on context for each theme and an exam question for each character and theme.
Students found this really useful to help them revise for the new closed book examinations.
Masculinity in Macbeth Exam Walk through
An exam walk-through lesson exploring the importance of masculinity in Macbeth. The lesson includes annotations for the given extract (Act 1 Scene 7) and then examines 3 other parts of the play that could be used to complete the response. There is also a model paragraph to help get students started on their response.
