A range of high grade Macbeth exam responses.
All responses were written to reflect the ability of grade 8/9 students working under timed conditions.
Marking is subjective but as an experienced examiner, I am confident all of these responses would, in my opinion, fit into the top band because all 6 contain thorough (and at times perceptive) debate with the nuances of the question supported by thorough and at times perceptive analysis of methods and wider ideas supported by fine-grained analysis of judicious quotations.

A grade 7 and a grade 8 slightly improved response to the following exam style question about Lady Macbeth. This is pretty similar to the May 2024 question but the featured extract was from Act 1 Scene 7 rather than Act 1 Scene 5.
Starting with this speech (Act 1 Scene 5 ‘The raven himself is hoarse’) explain how far you think Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth as a powerful woman.Write about:
• how Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth in this speech
• how Shakespeare presents Lady Macbeth in the play as a whole.
Includes a grade 7 version and a grade 8 version for comparison. The grade 8 version has a more thoughtful introduction and conclusion and creates more of a debate.
The PowerPoint contains colour coded annotations to showcase a deliberate and easy to imitate method for helping students structure a successful response.
Also contains a grade 9 response analysing Macbeth and Lady Macbeth’s marriage.
A grade 9 model response comparing the impact of war in Exposure and Poppies. Includes examiner annotations (by an AQA examiner) and a summative comment justifying the grade against the mark scheme. Useful reading for all students with the potential for grade 9.
For weaker students attempting this question there are planning sheets and a suggested writing frame.
A worksheet in which students have to match 50 key A Christmas Carol quotations to 50 brief explanations.
Also includes a follow up worksheet for students to then explain each quotation independently.
