A grade 9 response to the question about how Dickens presents ideas about joy and happiness in A Christmas Carol.
In yellow, I have the moments in the essay that do most to push the response into band 6 at the top of the mark scheme through the sensitive exploration word connotations and wider interpretations.

My attempt at producing a grade 9 full mark (or close to full mark response) to a question about how Macbeth’s fears are presented in the play. 2022.
The response is on the long side (1266) words. It has been written to try and meet the top band criteria for A01, A02 and A03.
Rather than starting with the extract, the response is chronological and charts the journey of Macbeth’s fears from being seemingly fearless at the start to forgetting the ‘taste of fears’ by the end of the play.
Also includes a planning timeline that charts Macbeth’s fears across the play.
Avoid having to write out the same comment 30 times by using this numerical code that link to generic targets you are likely to give to a reading or writing response. Saves me hours of time every week and how my department have started to adopt it too!

A 45 slide lesson that teaches students how to identify and comment on the effect of semantic fields in the short extract that is used for AQA Paper 1 Question 2 and Paper 2 Question 3.
There are 6 extracts to work through as students develop the skill to identify a pattern of words within each extract.
Commenting on a semantic field allows students to make a more sophisticated comment about the effect of language than merely commenting on individual words in isolation.

As you will see, all responses are at least band 5 because they present thoughtful and considered responses to the question. Many are in band 6 due to having judicious quotations, fine-grained analysis of methods, discussions about the various connotations of word choices (A02) combined with convincing exploration of wider contextual factors and themes linked to the methods (A03).
