Reading VIPERS resources

Reading Vipers was originally designed by The Literacy Shed. I have adapted the idea to suit our school’s needs and we use my resources for guided reading each day. The resource includes: independent reading activities, guided reading recording sheet and question cards that can be used to prompt discussion. This resource is designed for Key Stage 2 as it links to the Key Stage 2 reading domains. With adaptations, the resource can be used for Key Stage 1. Editable versions are available.
Recognition Board

Recognition Board

(2)
The recognition board is designed for positive praise, reinforcing the behaviours and actions you want in your classroom. It has been a whole school iniciative and each class has one focus that is the schools and one that is personal to the classroom. Children can nominate their peers and staff can nominate children too. If we or the children see the behaviour we put them on the recognition board and give them reward points on their Dojo profile. The children are super excited by the board and so motivated to recognise the behaviour in themself and each other. Ideas for the recognition board: • Supporting others • Perseverance • Staying on task • Having kind words • Putting our hand up • Showing kindness • Showing forgiveness • Listening carefully Please leave a review with any other ideas of how you have used the board - I would love to hear them!

Pharaoh's Fate - Persuasive Letter Year3

(0)
A unit based on the text Pharaoh’s Fate in which the children explore a murder mystery against Pharaoh Rameses II. It really engaged the children and can immerse them in the text as they become detectives. The end writing piece is a persuasive formal letter to the police, detailing our investigation and who the culprit is. The resource includes full planning and a selection of resources to go alongside the unit.

This resource is a home learning activity I sent out to my class. It is a 2-3 week unit on writing a myth (revision for the class as they have previously written Myths for our Egyptian Topic). It includes a warm up, planning and writing stage split into easily accessible activities. I hope it helps provide inspiration for your own home learning or is useful for sending out to your Year 3 children.

How to sketch an owl

A step by step to sketching an owl with diagram and presentation to support. No plan with the resource, only PDF for the instructions and a PowerPoint to support teaching. Our children had lots of practice attempts before getting it right. We played around with eye and body size and the positioning of the wings. I hope your class enjoy it as much as mine!

Year 6 Spelling Bee Mats

Year 6 Spelling Bee Mats

(1)
Spelling Bee Mats for Year 6 linked to the No Nonsense Spelling Scheme and National Curriculum for the year group. Each week the children will have a number of spelling lessons where they will learn different spelling rules and techniques they can use at school and home. The mats provide the children with set words to learn at school and home and will be randomly tested on a selection of these words periodically. The mats are designed to support teaching and learning at home. They should be sent home at the beginning of term and learnt alongside spelling lessons. The white words cover the spelling rules outlined in the National Curriculum but are broken down for each term. The spellings include 15 words that are highlighted in a “honey” colour. These words are from the National Curriculum statutory word list for the year group. At the end of each term, the children will be tested on all of the words (over a few days) to assess how well they have learnt them and to see whether any of the spelling rules need to be revised.

Newspaper report - Stig of the Dump

(0)
A whole unit of work based on the book Stig of the Dump by Clive King. The children will write a written report in the style of a newspaper. The sessions last approximately 3 weeks. All objectives come from the Year 3 English National Curriculum. Resource includes: Lessson PowerPoint with learning objectives, Grammar Geek (How to use this is below), some spelling resources (Spelling Bee sold separately) lesson activities and planning. Some resources are editable to suit your class. How to use Grammar Geek: Introduce the session slide, read out each objective. The colours focus on different parts of grammar: vocabulary, structure and application. Give children 5 minutes to complete as much as they can. Support can be given. We complete ours in silence and adults support children across the class. After 5 minutes, invite individual children to read the objective and give their answer with explanation e.g. I have put a comma here and full stop at the end because it has two clauses in this sentence. After children’s responses, show the ‘teacher’ responses and discuss reasons behind each answer. The aim of Grammar Geek is to increase the children’s knowledge and understanding of grammar whilst engaging them in the unit of work. There are spelling sessions weaved in to encourage this skill in students.
Year 3 - Egyptian Myth

Year 3 - Egyptian Myth

(0)
English writing unit based on an Egyptian myth - Isis and Osiris. I found it very hard to find any Egyptian myths to teach from so wrote my own version from texts I have previously read. The resource includes the unit planning, a PowerPoint with learning objectives, supporting slides and starter slides and supporting resources for some of the sessions. The main part of the unit is getting to know the myth really well in order for the children to write their own myth in a similar style, using the same myth structure. We use story mapping and story stepping to help the children memorise the myth - the children were able to do this within a week using their own words and actions. It is class specific so the resources are not included for story mapping and stepping - it is child led learning. I hope you enjoy the unit. Please leave a review if you did.

Year 3 Spelling Bee Mats

These Spelling Bee mats are designed to be used alongside the No Nonsense Spelling scheme but can be used as stand alone resources. They are designed for Year 3, following the National Curriculum guidelines for spellings. The “golden words” are directly from the Statutory word list for Years 3 and 4. Each mat is designed to be used over a half term (approximately 6 weeks). The way I use these mats is growing and changing each term. The aim is that they are given out at the start of each new term for children to learn both in school and at home. Over the term you will teach the spelling rules linked to the word mat (see the bottom of each mat) and periodically test the children. I chose 5 words each week to focus on, linking to the spelling rule I am teaching that week. At the end of a term all 50 words should be tested and any that need revising then filter in to the next term’s teaching. Please leave a review to tell others how you use the mats and help inspire other teachers too.
