These exemplar informal letters are perfect to use as WAGOLLs after reading Chapter 4 of the text. The letters are written from Sam to two different recipients, Sam’s parents and Sam’s friend, about his trip to Scotland. The contrasting model letters provide the opportunity for discussion about writing for a particular audience. Pupils can discuss the similarities and differences between the two. Two activities involving identifying correct and incorrect use of colons. Pupils must look carefully at the sentences to check if the colons have been put in the correct place for a variety of sentences. There are two activities provided: Colon Cards/Quiz: pupils sort the cards into correct and incorrect piles. Great for paired or small group work. Large and small cards are provided, plus a presentation to use to go through the answers or to use as a whole class quiz. Colon Worksheet: pupils identify whether the colons are correctly punctuating the sentences, and then make any necessary corrections; identify different types of colon usage; add missing colons to sentences and write sentences using colons. Great as an independent task. This worksheet uses different examples to the cards/quiz. Different ways of using colons are demonstrated, including: • Using a colon to introduce a list • Using a colon to separate related main clauses where the second clause explains the first clause • Using a colon to emphasise a word or phrase Answers to all tasks are included. A collection of rhetorical question sentence starters to be used as a handout or poster. These sentence stems provide scaffolding to help pupils write rhetorical questions. A rhetorical question is a question asked in order to create a dramatic effect or to make a point rather than to get an answer. It is a literary device often used to persuade the audience. This vocabulary bank is particularly useful for planning and completing persuasive writing texts, such as adverts, debates, speeches and persuasive letters. Rhetorical questions can also be found in other text types such as instructions, diaries and stories. This document contains examples of rhetorical question sentence stems. The rhetorical question stem list can be used to help to understand this literary device, to identify rhetorical questions within texts and to use rhetorical questions in writing. Four worksheets aimed at learning how to accurately punctuate direct speech. The worksheets are differentiated to cover a range of difficulty levels. The speech punctuation used includes inverted commas (speech marks), capital letters, commas and end of sentence punctuation (full stops, exclamation marks or question marks). Different formats of direct speech are given as examples with the reporting clause in different positions, including: • The reporting clause before the direct speech • The reporting clause after the direct speech • Two or more sentences of direct speech together • The reporting clause separating one sentence of direct speech • The reporting clause separating two sentences of direct speech A variety of verbs are used in the reporting clauses instead of ‘said’. The worksheets can be completed independently or in pairs. The worksheets are themed around a variety of traditional tales, but knowledge of the stories is not necessary to complete the activities. Answers to all tasks are included. All documents are provided as easily editable Word documents and as PDFs. These activities are particularly suitable for years 4, 5 and 6. Example newspaper report based on the children’s novel Charlotte’s Web by E. B. White. This exemplar newspaper article is perfect to use as a WAGOLL when studying Charlotte’s Web. The example text reports on the events up to the end of Chapter 11 of the book when Charlotte’s first web is discovered.
