A template to help pupils to write a profile about a book character.
Use this character profile template to write about a character’s appearance (looks), personality (traits), actions and special skills.
The character description template can be used by pupils to describe characters from books studied in Literacy and English lessons, read as a whole class text or independently, or to plan and create a new character before writing.
The template is ideal to use during World Book Day celebrations.

A word bank of 35 common contractions and their full forms. This word list is a useful resource for pupils who are learning about apostrophes and as a word mat when writing non-fiction genres such as diary entries, informal letters and other informal texts, as well as fiction writing, especially dialogue.
Contractions are words that are made by combining two words together but omitting some letters and replacing these with apostrophes.
Each set of words is presented above the shortened form with its apostrophe for omission.

A hyperbole is an extreme exaggeration. It is a way of writing that makes something sound bigger, smaller, better, worse, etc than it actually is. Hyperbole is a type of figurative language. It is a figure of speech and a literary device.

A collection of rhetorical question sentence starters to be used as a handout or poster. These sentence stems provide scaffolding to help pupils write rhetorical questions.
A rhetorical question is a question asked in order to create a dramatic effect or to make a point rather than to get an answer. It is a literary device often used to persuade the audience.
This vocabulary bank is particularly useful for planning and completing persuasive writing texts, such as adverts, debates, speeches and persuasive letters. Rhetorical questions can also be found in other text types such as instructions, diaries and stories.
This document contains examples of rhetorical question sentence stems. The rhetorical question stem list can be used to help to understand this literary device, to identify rhetorical questions within texts and to use rhetorical questions in writing.

This resource is a useful reminder to pupils about the names and roles of the characters in the story. It can be used as a reference sheet or displayed in the classroom to help pupils to understand the novel as they read.
The characters are listed in order of appearance in the novel and split onto three separate pages, so that each page can be introduced to pupils after reading, avoiding spoilers.

A list of conjunctive adverbs and transitional phrases to help pupils with writing texts such as explanations, non-chronological reports and discussion texts.
These words are often punctuated with semi-colons. An example has been included.
Use the word sheet to help pupils identify these connectives when reading texts and then use in their own writing.

A differentiated character matching activity about the novel Carrie’s War by Nina Bawden, a story about Second World War evacuees.
Pupils match the name of each key character with a description of that character. The activity is differentiated three ways. An answer sheet is included.
This activity should be used after reading the first five chapters of the book. The following characters are described: Carrie, Nick, Auntie Lou, Mr Evans, Albert Sandwich, Hepzibah, Mister Johnny, Miss Fazackerly, Mrs Gotobed and Mrs Willow.
