The classic Christmas poem Old Santaclaus with Much Delight with comprehension questions and writing challenge. Answers to the comprehension questions are included. The accompanying illustrations are also included.
This traditional anonymously written and illustrated children’s poem was published in New York in 1821, and was the first to mention and illustrate a Santa character.
Note that the final stanza of the eight stanza poem refers to naughty children being beaten by their parents.

Example newspaper report based on the children’s novel The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.
This exemplar newspaper article is perfect to use as a WAGOLL when studying The Iron Man. The example text reports on the events in Chapter 3 of the book when the Iron Man digs himself out of the hill.
The model newspaper report comes with two feature identification worksheets for children to fill in, one for layout features and one of language and grammar features, plus answer sheets.
Then pupils use the templates provided to plan and write their own newspaper report based on the example text. Pupils’ reports can be about the events in Chapter 3 or a different event from later on in the novel.

Two example diary texts from the point of view of Theseus and Ariadne from the ancient Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.
This diary writing pack comes with the following resources:
• Model diary text from Theseus’ point of view

• Feature Find worksheets for both diary entries
• Answers to the Feature Find worksheets
Read both exemplar diary entries. Examine the language, grammar and punctuation features found in the texts by completing the feature find worksheets. Finally write your own diary entries from the point of view of any characters from the myth, such as Theseus, Ariadne, King Minos, King Aegeus or even the Minotaur!
The following writing features, amongst others, are included in the diary entries:
• rule of three
• alliteration
• repetition for effect
• modal clauses
• synonyms to avoid repetition
• conjunctive adverbs
• ‘that’ omitted
• possessive noun phrases
• colons to replace ‘because’

A fun division activity: pupils divide a series of 3 digit numbers by 1 digit numbers (2, 5 & 10) to crack the code and find the message! These divisions require exchanging and have remainders.
Inbuilt self-checking for pupils as the letters corresponding to the answers are revealed to spell words in a sentence. A solution sheet is included with all answers. The resource comes as a PDF. Differentiated with a quicker version with fewer calculations.
Suitable for LKS2, covering the following National Curriculum objectives:
Year 3
• To write and calculate mathematical statements for division using the multiplication tables that they know, progressing to formal written methods.
• Pupils develop reliable written methods for division, progressing to the formal written methods of short division.
Year 4
• Pupils practise to become fluent in the formal written method of short division with exact answers.

Pupils must match up the two parts of sentences from the text that have been cut in two. Five sentence matching activities are provided, one for each chapter of The Iron Man novel by Ted Hughes.
After reading each chapter of the novel, in pairs, pupils match up the beginning of the sentence with the correct ending, reading them aloud to check that they sound complete.
Benefits for this activity:
• Encourages pupils to discuss how they know which parts to put together
• Leads to pupils to spot patterns in sentence structure
• Gives the opportunity for pupils to re-read sentences many times over
• Helps pupils attune their ears to the sound of a sentence
• Helps children recall the events of the story
• Provides the opportunity for children to pay close attention to the grammar of sentences including tense
• Helps pupils recognise sentences in their own writing in order to demarcate them using the correct punctuation
