I am Head of History and a Teaching and Learning Guide at a large secondary school. I teach all Key Stages with a focus on teaching GCSE and A Level to large classes. As I am in the classroom I understand the demands being placed on teachers by new specifications and assessment criteria. Through sharing these resources I hope to help teachers acquire new resources and ideas to make the step to the new specifications a successful one.

GCSE - The Cold War - Background Events

(1)
This lesson introduced students to the context of the Cold War by asking them to investigate 6 key events that had an impact on relationships between the countries involved in the Cold War thus allowing them to have a better understanding of why there was tension post WW2. A great intro lesson. The events are broken down into concise pieces of information with 'Thinking Points' added to help students to understand the significance of events. Students then have to concisely explain the significance in a grid, provided. Plotting the impact of these events on a graph afterwards helps students to see that relations between different countries were very complex. Appropriate for new 9-1 specifications.

KS5 - A Level History Student Progress Self Review

(0)
This resource has been developed to encourage students to further interpret feedback on essays by asking them to judge the feedback in different areas i.e. depth, clarity of explanation, use of historiography etc. Students have to rank their work from Very Good to Needs Improvement and then reflect on this before their next essay. This has made marking a lot more focussed and concise. Students' feedback has been positive. It is applicable to all A Level essays but has been used for the AQA Unit 2 courses so that the Extract element can be specifically judged to relate to the separate AOs needed here and not in the essay questions. An ongoing review that can be used across Y12 and Y13. Easily adapted for Unit 1 courses.

KS5 - AQA Unit 1D - Revision and overview questions - Supported Group work

(0)
This activity is based on the key questions highlighted by AQA as being significant to the Stuart Britain and the Crisis of Monarchy course. Each of the 6 questions have been turned into a supported task with clear instructions and advice for students to enable them to create a handout for the class. The differentiated aspect through providing students with thinking points and questions works well to support and challenge. A ready to go lesson.

KS5 - Stuart Britain - Continuity and Change, 1649-78 - supported Group task

(0)
In order to get the most out of group work this task supports students thoroughly in investigating a particular theme from 1649-1678. Students are required to work in groups to make a handout for the class. Each group has a specific guide related to their theme with questions they must answer, suggested web links and wider reading. These can be removed if you prefer as are not essential to the successful completion of the task. Used whilst teaching the new linear AQA Stuart Britain unit 1D and excellent results from Y13 class. Excellent as revision and an overview exercise.

KS5 - Paragraph Structure - How do you explain using evidence?

(0)
Students often find it difficult to explain in their essays rather than describe. These activities focus on using the PEEL structure - Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link to the Question - to help students explain and use specific examples. Each includes a model paragraph in response to an essay question which students have to identify in terms of the PEEL model and contribute their own paragraph. Useful to embed writing skills whilst providing model examples. Teacher example included to familiarise you with the PEEL structure. Could be used at Y12 or Y13. Examples are AQA Unit 1D Stuart Britain specific.

KS5 - James I and Charles I - Belief, Personality and the Royal Courts

(0)
This whole lesson resource will support units, including AQA Unit 1D, studying James I and Charles I. The PPT and booklet talk students through the significance of the royal courts whilst providing examples of historiography, questions and a sorting task to further their understanding. This is then applied by completing a Venn Diagram based on a task which asks students to move around the room - all resources included. Teacher answers to the initial card sort included. Very concise and informative - accessible to all.

AQA KS5 History Unit 1D - Extract Question support and 'How to...' for Y12

(0)
This resource is suitable as an introduction to the compulsory extract questions at Y12 or as a recap or further practice. Students are introduced to a starter question which then links into the extracts they will be analysing later to build confidence in content. There is a breakdown of AQA expectations, guidelines and markscheme and examples of how to annotate and select main arguments. A practice exercise is also included and markscheme.

AQA KS5 History - Narrative overview for Unit 1D linear course - Intro and revision

(0)
This resource is suitable for both Y12 and Y13 classes studying Stuart Britain and the Crisis of Monarchy, 1603 - 1702. Introduction and revision suitable. As an introduction the idea behind the resource is to give students an easily accessible narrative to make them aware of the bigger picture of the course over the linear option. This introduces them to key people, events and themes that they most likely have not encountered before and therefore will increase their understanding when they encounter course content. As a revision activity they could annotate and add specific examples, links to other sections of the course or simply use as a recap. Great for helping lower attaining students access the complex issues.

AQA KS5 Revision Checklist - Question based - Unit 1D Britain and the Crisis of Monarchy, 1603-1702

(1)
This is a thorough checklist covering all of the content of the Y12 and Y13 Stuart Britain and the Crisis of Monarchy 1603-1702. The format is based on questioning students so that they have to find out the information that they need rather than providing them with a description of events. My students have responded very positively to this extra challenge. In addition there is a column for students to tick completed sections that they have revised but an additional column to say whether they are confident or not with the topic. This has been used to highlight areas of whole class revision. Can be used with Y12 and Y13 classes.
