One week writing plan inspired by The Day the Crayons Quit

This is a one week writing plan, based on the theme of equity and fairness. The plan can be used for classes from Year 2-Year 6 and will help children to explore the concept of equity in an accessible way, through drama and story. We produced a wonderful pop-up book at the end of the week as a response to the text.

2 Week Writing Unit inspired by The Explorer by Katherine Rundell

This is a fun and creative writing unit suitable for Year 5 and 6, which is inspired by the adventure novel, The Explorer. In this unit children become explorers and write for a number of different purposes. The unit ends in writing a survival guide to the jungle, in the style of Bear Grylls! This unit was perfect for our study of habitats and adaptation, but will also go well alongside the study of Brazil and South American countries. All plans and models writes are included-all that is needed is a sprinkling of imagination to bring them to life!

2 Week Writing Unit inspired by The Heart and the Bottle

This is a 2 week writing unit I created to link in with our Year 6 topic on the heart. We started the unit by looking at the abstract meaning of the heart and linked this to Oliver Jeffers’ beautiful book, The Heart and the Bottle. We considered how the heart can symbolise love and compassion, so this unit gives the children the opportunity to write for a real purpose. Children will write informal letters to a charity before moving onto to more formal, persuasive methods of writing to facilitate fundraising on behalf of a charity. This unit lead can lead into a wonderful fundraising project for the children to run.

3 week writing unit inspired by 1001 Arabian Nights

This is a fun and exciting unit based on the tales of 1001 Arabian Nights! The unit can be linked to the book 1001 Arabian Nights by Geraldine McCaughrean but also contains links to film clips to support teaching. The unit contains planning, model writes and templates created by me and immerses the children in the mesmerising and magical world of Aladdin, Ali Baba and Sinbad! In this unit, children will write newspaper reports and job applications and the unit culminates in the children writing the 1002nd Arabian Nights tale and attending a ‘class film premiere!’ This unit was created for my Year 6 students to tie in with our study of Early Islamic Civilisation, however it will engage children across Key Stage 2 with drama and film opportunities. My class loved this unit and produced some really creative work as a result!

3 week writing unit inspired by Jeannie Baker's Mirror

I created this unit of work for our Year 6 study of the wordless picture book Mirror, as it was difficult to find resources to support the book. This is a complete, three week unit of work which focusses on character, setting and writing for different purposes. The unit culminates in writing and publishing two contrasting diary entries and creating books in the style of Mirror. All plans, resources and model writes have been included, so all you need is the book and a desire to produce some stunning work-my children produced some wonderful writing and artwork in response to the book. This English unit complements the KS2 topic, Early Islamic Civilisation but it is also the perfect text to run alongside the study of stories from other cultures. Whilst I wrote this for Key Stage 2, the unit is also suitable for Year 7 and 8 and has cross-curricular links to Geography, History and Languages.
