This week of Literacy lessons focuses on skills needed to write a high-quality diary entry. The skills covered in this week are past tense, past progressive tense and using a range of conjunctions. The lessons are resourced, all for under £1 per lesson! The writing outcome of the week is a diary entry as the old man from The Tin Forest and the final lesson gives pupils an opportunity to edit and redraft their work. This chain of lessons was highly successful and led to brilliant diary entries at the end of the week. A week of Literacy planning which is very well resourced for a mixed Year 3 and 4 class. This planning resulted in great diary entries written as Howard Carter. Every lesson is resourced fully and has a set of matching PowerPoint presentations. It's Christmas week, you have ten last minute play rehearsals scheduled, a church visit and the class are so excited about Christmas that you're thinking your job is closer to that of a cat herder than a teacher right now. Take a break from planning and take a look at these two lessons for Literacy in Christmas week (let's face it, you're not going to teach five Literacy lessons this week). These lessons were used to reinforce the use of relative clauses by getting them to write a relative clause poem. The class produced many outstanding poems using this method and remarkably got really excited about our Christmas-based Literacy lessons with a hidden SPaG focus!

The class really enjoyed learning about the celebrities in this week's Literacy lessons, especially Taylor Swift and Christiano Ronaldo! Five, fully resourced lessons all for under £1 each! Day 1: Reading comprehension focus - children read biographies of a celebrity and answer differentiated (retrieval and inference) questions about the text. This gives them an opportunity to experience high quality, short biographies. Day 2: Children practise using adverbial phrases ready to use them in their own writing. Differentiated worksheets (as for all lessons) are included for their activities. Day 3: Children practise organising information into paragraphs by sorting information from biographies into subheadings. Day 4&5: Children write their own biography about either Christiano Ronaldo or Taylor Swift after going through a good example on the IWB. Differentiated success criteria is included.

This differentiated homework asks pupils to create, illustrate and describe their own Greek Hero. We used the hero in their stories the following week but this could equally be used as a stand alone homework related to your topic.

This is the first week of planning and resources based around a book by Clive Gifford. It's a brilliant book -especially for boys who are reluctant to write- and will get lets of writing from them! This topic was taught in the morning in the run up to the submission of writing data for Year 6 as a way of gaining evidence ready for moderation. It came in very useful when moderation day did arrive!

This is a word document information text about pirates (what piracy is, when did it start and some pirate laws). Could be used to identify the features of a report by circling features or just used as an introduction to a pirate topic.
