A couple of resources developed to encourage an understanding of trigonometry as an introduction to the topic. Students draw accurate right-angle triangles with a 30 degree angle and measure the height, base and hypotenuse. They repeat this with other dimensions, and potentially different angles. They are then looking for a pattern between the sides. The second resource encourages them to begin using the ratio of the sides to find missing sides.
