SPANISCH FÜR DEUTSCHSPRACHIGE ALEMÁN SPANISH FOR GERMAN SPEAKERS SPANISH FRUITS WORD SEARCH for German-speaking Spanish learners.
Sopas de Letras are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Spanish, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie features a Spanish fruits word search with answer key, perfect for beginner Spanish learners of all grades. The fruits include masculine, feminine, singular and plural, with a blend of definite and indefinite articles - this really helps learners think a little more creatively about language, and their new Spanish vocabulary - they may learn la manzana, and it’s useful to give students opportunity to think about grammatical concepts, and how la becomes una for example.
There is a Spanish to German grid, where learners are prompted with the Spanish word, and look for it in Spanish in the grid. For additional consolidation, the grid also features a German word list that they have to complete, really putting their knowledge to the test. Learners can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on the grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Spanish and German, and facilitates learner independence.
There is an answer key grid for the search grid, so that learners can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys are really essential - they offer learners an additional opportunity to engage with language, develop more independence in their learning, and students genuinely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own, and particularly each others’ work. They’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing!
The word search is in landscape format, as this mirrors the common direction of reading and writing from left to right in both Spanish and German. I’ve found this to be the best format for beginner language learners, ensuring language is very clear and accessible. This kind of activity is really versatile too - I use for sub lessons, as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers at any time during the school year, as well as when I’m focusing on fruits in Spanish.

ESL EFL BEGINNER ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS This set of English conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner English students. Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning.
The questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the present perfect tense. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practising language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning.
Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more generic images. I do use images as much as possible with this kind of activity, not only to provide the prompt, but also to add to the visual appeal of it, which is a real motivator for learning.
I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going.
As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group.
The starters broadly address the following themes:
personal information
family & routines at home
hobbies & free time
likes & dislikes
local environment
food & drink
school & studies
sport & healthy living
countries & languages
weather & seasons

Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word, practising and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches, focusing on Numbers 0-100, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with the target vocabulary, but also aligning with cross-curricular learning - working on reading, writing, spelling, numeracy and French language skills in general.
Learners are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. As they move through the grids, their language skills are challenged in a range of ways - from straightforward vocabulary searching, to gap-fill, scrambled letters and more complex questions, which feature mathematical language in French. Hyphens are important in French numbers, and the grids feature these quite clearly, in order to ensure that learners can practise this aspect of language.
There is an answer grid for each word search, so that students can check their answers or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, and also help them to develop more independence in their learning. They’re also a great teacher time-saver.
There are two formats to choose from - the search grids and answer keys as separate worksheets, and also a file with both grids and answer keys together, so that you can print each grid and key double-sided, according to which suits your classroom needs better.

Set 1: o’clock & half past
Set 2: quarter to & past
Set 3: range of analogue clock times
I generally work with telling the time in French quite quickly with my beginner French students, as it lends itself really well to promoting speaking in the classroom, discussing daily routines for example.
There are two questions: Quelle heure est-il ? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Vrai ou faux ? and students write either vrai or faux - where the answer is faux, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation.
Each set comprises the following non-editable files:
= 60 question cards, 10 per A4 (8.5 x 11) paper

Laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. Print each set on different colour paper if possible, as they are more easily organized.

FRENCH FOR CHILDREN PRIMARY FRENCH KS3 FRENCH ANIMALS VOCABULARY CARDS perfect for young learners of French and an ideal introduction to the animal kingdom in French. They provide lots of opportunities to learn a range of animals, both***masculine and feminine***, and really do help to create a lively language learning environment. Children can develop their skills in word recognition and recall, pronunciation, speaking, listening and reading in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. They’re a great way of introducing the concept of gender, and of looking at the indefinite article in French too.
It doesn’t matter is any of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the card games encourage children to engage happily and confidently with French, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in French. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of unknown words using both visual clues and prompts, as well as linguistic indicators.
There are 24 animals featured, across a series of decks, which enable you to vary and differentiate your games:
Deck 1: picture and words cards, with both an image of, and the word for, the animal in French, which is useful for multi-skill learning, particularly in the introductory phase of learning animal vocabulary, and for familiarising students with the written word in French.
Deck 2: picture-only cards, useful for vocabulary recall
Deck 3: word-only cards in French, useful for word recognition, reading and spelling.
Deck 4: word-only cards in English, useful for a variety of games focusing on vocabulary recall
Deck 5: both French & English words on a single card, useful for close comparison of language, and recognition of corresponding words
Play the games regularly for maximum benefit. I’ve described a range that work well with my classes. Playing against a timer adds some extra fun - can children beat their own time record?
The animals featured are:
a bee : a bird : a butterfly : a cat : a caterpillar : a chicken : a cow : a dog
a donkey : a duck : a fish : a fox : a frog : a horse : a kangaroo : a monkey

99 high-frequency Italian verbs with 99 matching English verbs cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment, ideal for advanced KS3 Italian learners, as they prepare to move into and work confidently at GCSE Italian / KS4 Italian level. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional ‘vocabulary drilling’ exercises.
The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Italian-English reference list of all 99 verbs. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in Italian. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in Italian. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook.
There are three differentiated recall challenges:
Written Recall Challenge One students write the English verbs from an Italian prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, Italian-English.
Written Recall Challenge Two again, students write the verbs in English from an Italian prompt, but the Italian verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order.
Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding Italian verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It’s really useful for spelling in Italian too.
We also use their notes to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which again is really useful, and a very popular activity with students too. The resource works best when used frequently and regularly - students should store their work carefully in a learning folder or file that they can refer to at any point to support their learning and revision. Students also note down any new, related vocabulary, which builds into a really comprehensive high-frequency Italian verb vocabulary bank in a very short space of time.

GCSE GERMAN KS4 GERMAN A LEVEL GERMAN VERBS CARDS TWO SETS OF 198 CARDS WITH WORKBOOKS @ £3.75 EACH IN THE BUNDLE
Files are non-editable in a zipped format. The resource is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use carefully.
198 high-frequency German verbs with 198 matching English verbs cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment, ideal for GCSE German learners, as they prepare to move into and work confidently at advanced level German.
Each set features 99 German verbs in the infinitive form, with 99 corresponding English verbs cards, and an 18-page Reference, Recall & Write Workbook. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional ‘vocabulary drilling’ exercises.
Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their core German verbs vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write challenges have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the verbs don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this is a great way of encouraging your students to engage with new language, and to build their vocabulary at the same time. This prepares them really well for creative activities in German - they will have a rich vocabulary to choose from.
Students can work independently of the teacher, challenging themselves and each other in their best German accent to find all the matching verbs cards in German and English. The card templates allow students to apply their German knowledge practically and creatively, as they put together mini-quiz cards for each other, preferably from memory.
The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical German-English reference list of all 99 verbs. Students find this really useful as a learning support resource, and it comes in very handy for quick vocabulary quizzes too. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in German. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in German. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook.
There are three differentiated recall challenges:
Written Recall Challenge One students write the English verbs from a German prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, German-English.
Written Recall Challenge Two again, students write the verbs in English from a German prompt, but the German verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order.
Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding German verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It’s really useful for spelling in German too.
I encourage students to visit the Ideas, Notes and Next Steps page regularly, reflecting not only on the verbs they feel confident about, but also how they think their skills in listening, speaking, pronouncing German, reading and writing are developing - and equally importantly, what they can reasonably do to keep improving. I always have activities where creative application of language is required too, so that they can use the verbs in real-world contexts, which is essential for progressing in language learning.
We also use their notes to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which again is really useful, and a very popular activity with students too. The resource works best when used frequently and regularly - students should store their work carefully in a learning folder or file that they can refer to at any point to support their learning and revision. Laminate the game cards if you can - they are far more learner-friendly, and the additional prep and expense is definitely worth it, as the cards will last in excellent conditional for years. Print & photocopy an appropriate number of quiz card templates and Reference, Recall & Write books. The books are best copied double-sided, and double-stapled on the left-hand side, rather than a single staple in the top left-hand corner for example. This format is again far more reader and writer-friendly, and can be used more effectively as a learning and reference resource.

Spanish-speaking countries, capital cities and flags label and colour worksheets provide great learning opportunities for any appropriate age group, at any time of the school year, and are definitely the perfect activity for consolidating knowledge of these countries and flags - students definitely really enjoy testing their memory and recreating the flags in colour.
Students can develop their Spanish language skills, as well as their knowledge of both the Spanish-speaking and wider world, in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. There are 21 countries where Spanish is an official language, and I’ve also included three countries where Spanish is very widely spoken: Gibraltar, Andorra and the USA. There may be a number of countries and capital cities that students do not know, or are not aware of, so the games help them fully develop their general awareness, knowledge and understanding of Los países hispanohablantes.
There is a country, capital city and flag reference list of all countries and capitals, which students find useful to read through before working on the sheets - I laminate these, because they last for years - one list per small group of 5-6 students is sufficient. It can also be used as a year-round reference resource, which students can file in their workbooks or learning folders.
There are four sets of worksheets, each with two pages:
Set 1: color flags, students label with country and capital city
Set 2: blank flags, students label country and capital city, and color the flags
Set 3: blank flags, country is given, students label capital city, and color the flags

99 beginner Italian words & phrases with 99 matching English vocabulary cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment, ideal for beginner KS3 Italian learners, and a great revision resource for students entering into KS4 Italian.
Students can develop, embed, reinforce and refresh their beginner Italian vocabulary in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write activities have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the words or phrases don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this is a great way of encouraging your students to engage with new language, and to build their vocabulary at the same time.
The vocabulary groups are as follows:
Saluti : I giorni della settimana : I mesi dell’anno : I numeri da 0 a 20
La mia famiglia : Le parole comuni : Italiano in classe : Domande e risposte
Students can work independently of the teacher, challenging themselves and each other in their best Italian accent to find all the matching words & phrases cards in Italian and English. The card templates allow students to apply their Italian knowledge practically and creatively, as they put together mini-quiz cards for each other, preferably from memory. Creating new language is an essential element of successful language learning, so this is a key part of the overall activity, and it’s really popular with my students.
The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical Italian-English reference list of all 99 words & phrases. There are three recall challenges:
Written Recall Challenge One students write the English word or phrase from an Italian prompt, with all the words and phrases grouped together in the same category
Written Recall Challenge Two with this challenge, students write the words or phrases in Italian from an English prompt, and again, they’re all group together in the same category
Written Recall Challenge Three the final challenge ‘switches’ at each question from Italian to English, and lists words and phrases randomly from each category. This challenges the memory more than when the vocabulary is in the order learners first learn it in, with the additional challenge of moving between the two languages.

400 high-frequency French adjectives, listed alphabetically French-English with gender agreement guide - a great learning support resource for GCSE French and as a refresher and vocabulary audit for A Level French students. It’s useful to give the book to advanced KS3 French students too, as it provides a language road map with learning goals, outlining the adjectives they should ideally know by a specific stage in their learning.
I create a lot of language learning reference books for my languages students, they’re really popular with my students, who like to have a bank of reference resources for both initial learning and longer-term learning and revision. There are 22 pages in the book, and all 400 adjectives are listed alphabetically French-English. Each adjective is also shown in the masculine, feminine, singular and plural forms, which my students find really helpful as they begin to engage with gender agreement in French. I use the reference book for quick vocabulary quizzes too - either I or a nominated student shouts out a French or English adjective, with teams giving the corresponding French or English adjective - I’ve found this is a really successful way of avoiding more formal vocabulary tests, while still providing students with frequent opportunity to refresh and embed essential French vocabulary.
The adjectives are useful for engaging with the following topics and themes:
youth, identity & lifestyle : fashion : culture, customs and traditions relationships and family : technology and social media : sport, health and fitness; free time, hobbies and interests : entertainment and leisure : food and drink; France and French-speaking countries : local, national & international global areas of interest : transport : holidays, tourism and travel : environment, pollution, recycling and climate : social issues : school, college, current and future study : work experience, skills and personal qualities : employment, ambitions and career plans

GCSE GERMAN KS3 GERMAN KS4 GERMAN IMPERFECT TENSE 25 high-frequency German verbs in the imperfect tense. The quick conjugations have always been really popular with my students, who find them a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate essential verbs in German. I’ve used them in a range of contexts too, such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. I give my students regular opportunities to work through the same conjugations until they feel confident about how German conjugation ‘works’, and are able to recognize patterns and so predict conjugation accurately.
The workbook is structured as follows:
Two alphabetical verb reference lists: German-English and English-German.
Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations:
Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in German across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation.
Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in German, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in German.
Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding German verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt.
Notes and Next Steps sheet, which encourages students to think about how their understanding of German conjugation works, what progress they have made, what their targets for improvement might realistically be, and what they might reasonably do in order to meet those targets. We also use it to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really popular and effective activity too. It’s also a great place to note any additional high-frequency verbs that students learn, and this helps to build up a really strong verb vocabulary bank.
