GERMAN PERFECT TENSE CONJUGATION PRACTICE

(0)
GCSE GERMAN KS3 GERMAN KS4 GERMAN HIGH-FREQUENCY GERMAN VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE This workbook focuses on 25 high-frequency verbs in the perfect tense. I’ve used these ‘quick conjugations’ for many years with my German students. My students find them to be a great way of practising, reinforcing and revising how to conjugate essential verbs in German. I’ve used them in a range of contexts such as independent work either in class time or at home, holiday refresher work, or individual activities for cover lessons. I tend to give my students regular opportunities to practise the conjugations during the whole schools year, and they find this really useful for mapping their own progress and developing their overall understanding of how German conjugation ‘works’. I find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example with the German perfect tense, students need to have a good grasp of the relevant auxiliary in the present tense - there are verbs that require either haben or sein, and to get used to ensuring that the past participle is situated at the end of the clause or sentence. Forming the past participle of a whole range of verb groups follows a certain pattern, which students are able to identify and predict the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations will certainly help to embed that successfully. The workbook is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: German-English and English-German Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in German across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in German, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in German. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding German verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt. Notes & Next Steps template, which encourages students to think about how their understanding of German conjugation works, what progress they have made, what their targets for improvement might realistically be, and what they might reasonably do in order to meet those targets. answer key which helps students develop more independence in their learning, also providing them with an additional opportunity to engage with the target language Files are non-editable files in a zipped format. SPANISH ER VERBS IMPERFECT TENSE

GCSE SPANISH KS3 SPANISH KS4 SPANISH IMPERFECT TENSE ER VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE 25 high-frequency Spanish ER verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys ideal for advanced KS3 Spanish & KS4 Spanish students who are regularly working with more complex language and texts, including several tenses. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. Though the workbooks focus on formation and conjugation, rather than usage, I still find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb formation and conjugation. Language learners tend to conflate what they know about grammar in their first language with the grammar of the language they are learning. For example, students with English as a first language frequently confuse the imperfect tense with the preterite tense when they are conjugating them, as well as when and how to use either tense. There are specific differences in usage between the tenses, and I do always discuss this with students about this when we’re using the workbooks The resource is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Spanish-English and English-Spanish, useful for longer-term reference too Three differentiated conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Spanish across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in Spanish, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in Spanish. Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding Spanish verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from a Spanish prompt. GCSE SPANISH KS4 spanish CONDITIONAL TENSE ER VERBS CONJUGATION PRACTICE 25 high-frequency Spanish ER verbs, 150 conjugation questions, 3 differentiated challenges, answer keys ideal for KS4 Spanish students who are regularly working with more complex language and texts, which include a range of tenses. My students really like this kind of grammar activity, as they like to work and learn independently, which is a successful way of varying teaching and learning methodologies - I’ve found it’s really important to avoid predominantly teacher-led learning in the languages classroom. The workbook focuses on the correct conjugation of verbs, rather than usage. Language learners do often try to conflate what they know about grammar in their first language with that of the language they are learning. For example, students with English as a first language often get a little confused by the absence of a direct equivalent of would, before they really grasp that the notion of conditional is indicated in the verb stem + relevant pronoun ending, which is an entirely new concept for learners. In turn, they often mix up future tense and conditional tense endings, and I find it really useful to look at both tenses fairly closely together so that students can compare and contrast both formation and usage. The resource is structured as follows: Two alphabetical verb reference lists: Spanish-English and English-Spanish, useful for longer-term reference too Three differentiated conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations: Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in Spanish across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation. SPANISH VERBS DOMINOES #1

SPANISH VERBS DOMINOES #1

GCSE SPANISH DOMINOES GAMES High-frequency Spanish verbs dominoes games: 3 games and challenges are a lively alternative to more traditional grammar & vocabulary ‘drilling’ activities. They will help students build up and embed their vocabulary and knowledge of high-frequency Spanish verbs in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. There are 99 common Spanish verbs in the infinitive form, along with the corresponding English verbs. Students can work happily challenging themselves and each other to create a perfect domino bilingual verb sequence, on the classroom floor, or on a long(ish) table, by matching the Spanish and English verbs. The game has a bonus multi-focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, and reading, and also helps students identify cognates and words that may look similar to English, but mean something different. There are three games, each with a different level of challenge: Challenge One features the verbs in alphabetical order, Spanish to English Challenge Two features the verbs in random order, also Spanish to English Challenge Three again features the verbs in random order, but this time from English to Spanish, which works a little different in terms of vocab recall There’s a full alphabetical Spanish-English verb list, which students find really useful as they begin to build and embed their verb vocabulary - we find it useful to have a quick look through the list prior to playing for the first time, and it’s also really good for some additional whole-group pronunciation practice. Each challenge is on a different background, so that they can be easily identified. To ensure successful learning, play regularly as you work with verbs and vocabulary - against a timer in teams works well to map both improved recall and word recognition, as well as increasing confidence - students genuinely enjoy seeing if they can beat their own time record. Dominoes games work really well in language learning as a free-choice activity - I have folders of resources for students to select their own activity, according to what they feel they would most like to revisit. We have free-choice activity time every few lessons for a half hour or so, which also provides a welcome break from the particular target focus. There’s definitely prep involved - printing and cutting out. I always laminate my dominoes games, as they’re far more learner-friendly, and they last for absolutely years, so once you’re prepped the set or several sets, you will never have to prep the games again. GERMAN PHONICS PRONUNCIATION SPELLING #2

KS3 KS4 GERMAN RHYMING WORDS CARDS PHONICS PRONUNCIATION SPELLING PRACTICE - 99 WORDS FOCUSING ON PHONICS, SOUNDS AND RHYMES - CARDS AND WHOLE-GROUP PRONUNCIATION PRACTICE - 99 WORDS FOCUSING ON PHONICS, SOUNDS AND RHYMES - CARDS AND WHOLE-GROUP PRONUNCIATION PRACTICE There are 99 cards featuring a range of sounds in German, and a whole-group presentation and practice resource. We revisit the activities frequently to help students develop phonic awareness and a thorough understanding of how German spelling and sounds work. I’ve found that students are quickly able to recognize sound patterns, enabling them to predict the pronunciation of new words accurately. The whole-group presentations are non-editable for copyright reasons, but move forward via a click as a slide show, with all the rhymes and corresponding sounds grouped together - I often use these at the beginning of the lesson, or a 5-minute pronunciation and speaking break during a lesson, again at very regular intervals. I always encourage students to look carefully at all parts of a particular word, not just the focus sound: for example Hochhaus - the focus sound is au, but the ch sound is equally important. The resource works well for my German students at all stages of learning, from beginner to advanced. We use the card template for students to add corresponding sounds / rhymes that they know, or learn, over time. I allocate 10-15 minutes frequently to focus on pronunciation and sounds - this really does help students develop authentic German pronunciation. Laminate the cards if possible - they are far more learner-friendly, and will remain in excellent condition for years. I’ve included a set without a background, as that is not as expensive to prep as the colour - I do create colour-coded sets for my students when I can, as it helps them to identify different resources, but they are fine without color too. All files are non-editable for copyright reasons. They are copyright, all rights reserved. They may not be copied, shared, rewritten or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. FRENCH FRUITS FLASHCARDS POSTERS

PRIMARY FRENCH KS2 FRENCH KS3 FRENCH FRUITS FLASHCARDS POSTERS Les fruits en français 25 fruits in French, definite article, masculine & feminine, singular & plural These French fruits flashcards / display posters create a fabulous French look and feel in the learning environment. I’ve found that this also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of French. They introduce learners to a range of fruits in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarise themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. My younger French students really love the fruits posters / flashcards, and like to compare the French and English words. I’ve found that they also help very young children develop their growing understanding of food, healthy eating and the enormous number of different fruits we have. We don’t necessarily learn all the fruits in our formal learning plan, but we do use them for pronunciation and speaking practice, and for memory and vocabulary recall games too. I use these kinds of flashcards / posters to gradually introduce and work on the concept of gender, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward Qu’est-ce que c’est… ? to Oui/non or Vrai/faux ? questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as negative sentences Non, ce n’est pas la pomme, c’est la banane and so on. The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two backgrounds to choose from - French flag or black wave, so 50 flashcards / posters. I always laminate my posters / flashcards as they hang a lot better, are easier to manipulate as flashcards, and definitely last in great condition for years! The fruits are: green apples red apple bananas cherries dates fig green grapes red grapes kiwi lemon mango nectarine olives oranges papaya peach pear pineapple pumpkin raspberry redcurrants rhubarb starfruit strawberries watermelon The product is copyright, all rights reserved. ENGLISH VEGETABLES I HAVE, WHO HAS?

ESL EFL ENGLISH VEGETABLES ACTIVITIES a lively & communicative whole-group language learning game, perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing a range of vegetables in English, ideal for advanced beginner English into intermediate English students. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. I point out particular phonemes and sounds, such as the soft c in lettuce compared to the hard c in carrot, and the addition of n to a when preceding a noun starting with a vowel, such as an aubergine for example. The aim of the game is to create an English sentence chain as quickly as possible. There are 28 vegetables featured in the game: artichoke; asparagus; aubergine; green beans; beetroot; broccoli; Brussels sprout; cabbage; carrot; cauliflower; celery; cucumber; garlic; leek; lettuce; mushroom; onion; peas; green pepper; red pepper; yellow pepper; potato; sweet potato; radish; spinach; sweetcorn; tomato; zucchini There is implicit input on grammatical concepts such as the lack of adjectival agreement and gender, and position of adjectives, which are often entirely new concepts for many ESL/EFL learners. Nouns feature definite, indefinite and partitive articles too. This is a very successful way of really getting the most of what looks like a straightforward game for consolidating the target vocabulary - it is actually so much more! The question card template provides an additional learning activity, with students***applying their developing English language knowledge creatively and practically***, which is an essential element of successful language learning. The key focus on on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction. The vegetables are: artichoke : asparagus : beetroot : broccoli : cabbage : carrots : cauliflower celery : corn : cucumber : eggplants / aubergines : French / green beans garlic : leeks : lettuce : mushrooms : onions : peas : red peppers : yellow pepper potatoes : sprouts : spinach : sweet potatoes : tomato The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 GERMAN BEGINNER GERMAN BREAKFAST WORD WALL Deutsch für Kinder Das Frühstück Word Wall 18 scrumptious breakfast items. Displaying key vocabulary in the German classroom is a really simple and successful way of creating a German ambiance, showing***language in its real-world use***, and keeping language fresh in students’ minds, particularly in the introductory phase of that particular vocabulary set. There are 18 breakfast items in this word wall, though I may not actually have all the items in my learning plan. I tend to include additional language to help students develop language skills and awareness in general. There is implicit grammatical input, with a focus on the definite article in German, a range of masculine, feminine and neuter, singular and plural. We look at cognates and near-cognates, and talk about similarities and differences between the words in German and English. We discuss breakfast in general, what we like to eat, or we’d like to try. In this way, the word wall becomes a real learning tool, and not simply attractive classroom decor. The breakfast items are: bacon : yoghurt : cup of coffee : cereal : jam : pancakes : croissant : waffles porridge : orange juice : milk : boiled egg & boiled eggs (useful for looking at singular/plural differences) : fried egg : toast : bread rolls : syrup : tea There are two headers: Guten Appetit! and Das Frühstück. Students enjoy creating their own headers too, as well as adding to the number of breakfast items as they develop their German vocabulary. There are two cards per 8.5 x 11 (A4) page in landscape format, which ensures the words are big enough for students to be able to read from various locations in the classroom. There are two backgrounds to choose from - German flag or black wave. I always print my word walls on robust card stock and/or laminate, because they hang really well, and last in excellent condition for years, meaning I can keep recycling them, keeping prep and expense to a minimum. PRIMARY FRENCH HALLOWEEN NUMBERS 0-20 GAMES CARDS

(0)
Primary French FSL French Immersion These French Numbers 0-20 Halloween games cards are great for practising numbers in French with a focus on addition and subtraction - they also offer a really useful opportunity for multi-skill and cross-curricular learning. Children can develop their skills in word recognition and recall, pronunciation, speaking, listening and reading in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. My younger learners really love to work with the cards, and we play as often as we can in the run-up to Halloween. There are lots of games they like to play, and I’ve described several of them in the resource file. I always do a quick warm-up and recap of numbers before we play any number games, and the simple forwards and backwards counting presentation is ideal for this. There are 72 calculations in total - 36 addition and 36 subtraction. The answer cards are marked with a plus or minus sign. This means that there are 144 cards in total - it’s quite a bit of prep, but do laminate them if you can, as they are far more user-friendly, and also last for many Halloweens! PRIMARY GERMAN CLASSROOM DISPLAY COLOURS POSTERS FLASHCARDS These German colours posters create an instant introduction to a range of colours in German in the classroom. The posters definitely give the learning environment a fabulous German look and feel, promoting German as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of learners. They introduce learners to colours in German from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of German words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. The key colours are: beige (both beige and cremefarben); black; blue; brown; green; grey; navy-blue; orange; bright pink; pink; purple; red; turquoise; white; yellow. There are two backgrounds to choose from: German Flag and black wave, each set has 16 posters/flashards, so 32 in total. It doesn’t matter if some of the colors don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in German, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in German. GERMAN FRUITS FLASHCARDS POSTERS

PRIMARY GERMAN KS3 GERMAN FRUITS POSTERS FLASHCARDS Das Obst auf Deutsch 25 fruits in German, definite article, masculine & feminine, singular & plural. Using flashcards to introduce and practise language is a popular and successful language teaching and learning method, providing lots of opportunity for vocabulary games and recall. The flashcards are equally useful as classroom posters, keeping key target language prominent and visible, as well as creating a really German ambiance in the learning environment. I use this set to gradually introduce and work on the concept of gender, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward Was ist das? to Ja/nein or Richtig/falsch questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as plurals or particularly negative sentences, which can be quite tricky in German, and often requires a lot of practice Nein, das ist kein Apfel, das ist eine Banane and so on. This kind of vocabulary is really useful for an implicit approach to introducing and practising the accusative of articles too, for example Ich habe einen Apfel, ich habe den Apfel. The key focus on on the definite article, both masculine and feminine, singular and plural, though I do use the set to start to compare these with the indefinite article, which I’ve found to be a really successful way of helping students embed grammatical concepts such as gender, implicitly, without the need for repeated explicit instruction. It’s good to move away from predominantly teacher-led activities, and after the initial introduction phase, I have students take turns manipulating the cards and asking the questions. Again, this is a really popular activity, and a very easy way of enabling students to practise asking questions, instead of always responding to them. The fruits are: green apples red apple bananas cherries dates fig green grapes red grapes kiwi lemon mango nectarine olives oranges papaya peach pears pineapple pumpkin raspberry redcurrants rhubarb starfruit strawberries watermelon I don’t have 25 fruits in my initial learning plan, but I always have additional language to provide some variety as well as a little extra challenge. This set includes some fruits that children may not know yet, such as starfruit and redcurrants, which gives us a chance to discuss healthy eating, fruits we like, don’t like, or would like to try, and for generally developing children’s vocabulary in their own language too.
