Please read the Terms of Use. Mots cachés are a fabulous way of encouraging students to engage with the written word in French, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This set features ten differentiated word searches with answer keys, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. It focuses on 40 countries / territories where French is an official language. The word searches help students develop their knowledge and awareness of the Francophone world, and just how widely it is spoken around the globe. I’ve used the definite article for the countries, so that students can see which countries are masculine, and which feminine, which in turn helps consolidate knowledge of gender in French. In Grids 1-4, students search for a particular country. In Grids 5 & 6, they search for a range of capital cities. Grid 7 gives 16 capital cities as prompts, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid. Similarly, in Grid 8, there are 16 countries given, and students search for the corresponding capital cities in the grid. Grids 9 & 10 show a selection of national flags, and students search for the corresponding countries in the grid, and also write the country name in the prompt box next to the individual flag. There is a single grid per page, A4 (8.5 x 11) portrait format. Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Each grid has a corresponding answer key, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. There is also a complete reference sheet of all 40 countries, capital cities and flags - you can either laminate this to share around small groups of students, or give one to each student to stick into their learning workbooks as a general longer-term reference resource. The word searches work well across the school year, not only when you’re focusing on la Francophonie. Use them as starters, refreshers, plenaries or fun-time fillers quite regularly - this really does help embed students’ learning, and they genuinely enjoy putting their memory to the test. This set features ten differentiated word searches, with corresponding answer keys, focusing on a wide range of German Christmas vocabulary, with each consecutive grid increasing in challenge. The searches offer a really useful learning opportunity - enabling learners to engage with German Christmas vocabulary, which is a great springboard for discussion on Christmas traditions and practices in Germany and other German-speaking countries, comparing them to other traditions and practices students know, but also working on reading, writing, spelling and German language skills in general. Learners are able to identify which direction words are located in within the grid by referring to the arrow key. There are also five grid templates for learners to create their own searches for each other — this is a really popular activity, and I’ve found that my learners often like to create grids for family at home too. The templates enable learners to apply their language practically and creatively, which is really important at this stage of German language development. There is a single word search per page, portrait format, which ensures that text is accessible and manageable. Some of the more challenging grids do look a little cramped, as a good number of the German words are quite long. There are 50 German Christmas words across the word searches - it’s not necessary for students to learn all the words explicitly - over time, they tend to become familiar with all of them anyway. Looking for unfamiliar words in the grids really works well for implicit learning. There’s a full alphabetical vocab list, which is a great long-term German Christmas vocabulary reference resource, which my students like to add to when they can. Ideal for cross-curricular learning in German class: students can develop their knowledge of the geography of Europe in a cooperative, communicative and interactive way, independently of the teacher. At the same time, students are developing their German language skills: speaking, listening and reading in particular, as well as broadening their German vocabulary. We play both as a whole-group team quiz, and in pairs or small groups on a regular basis - students are particularly keen to see if they can beat their own points record, and are really motivated by their developing knowledge. The set contains all European countries and capital cities, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. Each question has 4 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in capital letters. The quiz cards are numbered, but questions can be asked in random order too: simply place all the cards in a bowl, box or tin, and work your way through. There are two quiz challenges: Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with four possible capital cities to choose from. Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with four possible countries to choose from. This challenge uses the definite article in the responses to help consolidate students’ knowledge of the gender of individual countries and the use of the dative following the preposition von. The card numbers for Challenge 1 are in the top right-hand corner; Challenge 2 in the top left-hand corner so that the cards can be organised and sorted easily. Laminate the cards if possible: they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. Before playing, it’s useful to show students a map of Europe, so that they can visualize the location of each country and capital city, not only as an individual location with Europe, but also as a location in relation to other European countries and capital cities. This definitely helps students understand and memorise the countries and capital cities. Please read the Terms of Use. Create a fabulous Spanish look and feel in the learning environment, promoting Spanish as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of the classroom. Telling the time is key beginner Spanish vocabulary, which is really useful to know as soon as possible, and students are able to familiarise themselves with how Spanish words ‘look’, and also how sounds are represented in the written form. I use these kinds of flashcards / posters to gradually introduce and work on the specific target language vocabulary we’re working on, and to provide speaking and pronunciation prompts, from the straightforward ¿Qué hora es? to ¿Sí/ no? or ¿Verdadero o falso? questions, which allow us to move to from one-word responses to more complex language, such as negative sentences No, no es medianoche, es mediodía and so on, paying particular attention here to the masculine and feminine. These are really simple ways to really try to get the most from classroom learning dsiplay, using them as visual language prompts, as well as keeping the target vocabulary fresh in students’ minds, and as language refresh and revision by changing the display at certain points of the school year. I like to have sets of learning displays for students, not only when they’re new to the target vocabulary, but also for refreshing and revising language they’ve learnt some time ago. Students can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image, and it’s particularly important to match a clock time with the corresponding clock face when learning how to tell the time. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practise language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. The flashcards / posters are 8.5 x 11 (A4) portrait size. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Spanish flag or plain, so 56 flashcards / posters in total. I’ve found that this also helps promote Italian as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of Italian. They introduce learners to a range of animals in Italian from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarise themselves with how*** Italian*** words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which again is a great opportunity to begin to compare Italian to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as orso and lupo. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from their first language, helps learners become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts in both languages, which I’ve found to be really useful for both current and later learning. The animals are: a bear a bee a bird a butterfly a cat a dog a fish a fox a frog a horse a kangaroo a monkey a mouse an owl a parrot a rabbit a spider a squirrel a turtle / tortoise a wolf It doesn’t matter if some of the animals don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters / flashcards provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word in Italian, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates and near-cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in Italian. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts. Use them as flashcards to introduce and practice language too - it’s a traditional and successful low-tech teaching method, which gives students a welcome break from the whiteboard - varying teaching methodologies in the language learning classroom is always a good idea, and I also encourage my students to take the role of the teacher too, which they find really motivating. EFL ESL English Fruits Flashcards Posters These English fruits flashcards / posters create an instant introduction to 25 fruits in English in the classroom. They are perfect for developing English language and literacy skills, really getting the most from classroom display. They introduce learners to a range of fruits in English from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with both the ‘look’ of English words, and how sounds are represented in the written form. There are 25 fruits in either the singular or plural form using the definite article. Looking at language, and the ways it works, either similarly to, or differently from, other languages learners may already know, or are learning, helps them become implicitly aware of linguistic concepts. This is really useful for both current and later learning. It doesn’t matter if some of the fruits don’t feature in your immediate or even longer-term learning plan: the posters provide learners with daily opportunities to engage with the written word, to develop their recognition and recall of individual words, to identify cognates, and to begin to link spelling with sound in English. They also help learners begin to work out the meaning of new and unknown words from visual clues or prompts. Along the way, learners can suggest other fruits to add to the display, and may even choose to try some fruits they haven’t tasted before. These 60 challenge cards are perfect for developing German language skills in general, as well as for practising and revising how to tell the time in German - there are 60 cards, divided into two sets of 30 questions, full answer key and a recording sheet. The cards have a bonus multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling, and really help students develop more independence in their learning, moving away from more teacher-led tasks and activities. The questions in this set are a straightforward introduction to telling the time, focus on a range of analogue clock times for students who have already been introduced to the basics of telling the time in German, and also to working and learning with challenge cards - I generally work with numbers quite quickly with my beginner language students, and move on to challenge card activities as soon as I can, so that they can develop independent and collaborative learning skills. There are two questions: Wie spät ist es / Wie viel Uhr ist es? with a particular clock face, and students write the response on their recording sheet or in their workbooks. The second question is Richtig oder falsch? and students write either richtig or falsch - where the answer is falsch, remind students to write the correct time for additional consolidation.
