It’s great to learn some French Christmas vocabulary, though I don’t expect my learners to learn all the words necessarily - it’s equally important to introduce learners to different traditions and practices through the images, and develop their general French language skills confidently and happily. The game has a multi-skill focus: listening, speaking & reading, with an important bonus focus on social interaction and participation. Learners walk around, talking to each other and working together to create the chain. It’s perfect for pronunciation practice too. The aim of the game is to create an alphabetical word chain - this can either be a ‘human’ chain, though I prefer to have learners work together to create an alphabetical line on a table, or even on the floor. There are 32 French Christmas words, arranged alphabetically. The first and last cards have J’ai la première carte and J’ai la dernière carte written on them. If you have fewer than thirty-two learners in your group, randomly select several to have more than one card. Learners love it when you play too! The words are all definite article, masculine and feminine, with singular and plural - this also offers a useful opportunity to talk about grammatical concepts if your learners are at that particular stage. Try to laminate the cards if you can - they’re far more learner-friendly, and they do last for absolutely years! Learners can also apply their language skills very practically (and artistically!) by creating their own cards on the template. We play both as a whole-group team quiz, and in pairs or small groups on a regular basis - students are particularly keen to see if they can beat their own points record, and are really motivated by their developing knowledge. The set contains all European countries and capital cities, including some island communities such as the Faroe Islands and Guernsey. Each question has 4 answers to choose from. The correct answer is given in capital letters. The quiz cards are numbered, but questions can be asked in random order too: simply place all the cards in a bowl, box or tin, and work your way through. There are two quiz challenges: Challenge 1 gives the country as a prompt, with four possible capital cities to choose from. Challenge 2 gives the capital city as a prompt, with four possible countries to choose from. The card numbers for Challenge 1 are in the top right-hand corner; Challenge 2 in the top left-hand corner so that the cards can be organised and sorted easily. Laminate the cards if possible: they’re more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years. Before playing, it’s useful to show students a map of Europe, so that they can visualize the location of each country and capital city, not only as an individual location with Europe, but also as a location in relation to other European countries and capital cities. The repetitive nature of the questions and answers, supported by the visual prompt of the clock faces, makes it perfect for practising, reinforcing & refreshing how to tell the time in French, and for pronunciation practice too. There are 8 clock faces per page, and I cut the cards in sets of 2, so four larger cards per page. This means that students can see two clock faces and times per game card, which really helps to consolidate learning. It’s also a lot less prep than cutting out eight individual cards, though I do actually have a set like this, which we use as a larger-size dominoes game. I’ve found that this also helps promote French as a living language, featuring in the everyday life of beginner learners of French. They introduce learners to a range of animals in French from the very beginning of their learning, and they are able to familiarize themselves with how French words ‘look’, and how sounds are represented in the written form. Students definitely notice the different words for a/an, and ask why some animals are un, and others are une. I’ve used this as a useful prompt to introduce the concept of gender. There are 20 animals using the masculine and feminine indefinite article, which is a great opportunity to begin to compare French to English. I’ve chosen a couple of insects and birds, as well as animals that feature in very popular stories, such as ours and loup. I've found having the posters in my classroom provides an instant introduction to the scope of the Spanish-speaking world, and seeing the countries where Portuguese, rather than Spanish, is spoken, prevents them confusing the two from the very beginning of their learning - my students do often tend to get them a little mixed up! The posters are great for reading, speaking and pronunciation prompts too. I often ask quick questions such as ¿Cuál es la capital de...?, ¿Sí o no? Madrid es la capital de Paraguay? or ¿Se habla español o portugués en Brasil? - there are lots of questioning and speaking opportunities, using the posters as visual prompts. Speaking does tend to be quite a challenging skill, particularly for beginner language learners, so getting the most from classroom decor to encourage students to speak is really important. Iideal multi-skill language learning activity for developing listening, speaking, reading, writing and spelling skills for German language learners of all ages - in my experience, adult learners really enjoy a few competitive games of bingo too! I’ve described the games as not grade-specific, as the general goal for me is not to learn a lot of German Christmas vocabulary as such, but to work quite specifically on German language skills development. There are 100 grids in total, in both colour & BW. The color grids definitely look really good, but can prove expensive to prep - I have sets that I’ve laminated, and students use wipe-free pens, so that the grids can be used many times. Younger learners do tend to prefer the BW grids, taking some additional time to colour them in themselves. I often combine that activity with revision of colours, which can work really well too. The games are designed for players to cross off all the words or pictures on their grids in order to win the game.
