I encourage my beginner Italian students of all ages and stages to build up comprehensive vocabulary banks that they can reference easily whenever they need it, and they’re also really useful for regular vocabulary audits, which really helps students map their progress and keep track of their learning. PRIMARY ITALIAN KS3 ITALIAN DAYS OF THE WEEK WORD SEARCH Word searches are a fabulous way of encouraging learners to engage with the written word in Italian, refreshing and reinforcing language as they complete the grids. This freebie features a word search focusing on the days of the week in Italian, key beginner vocabulary for Italian learners. This search grid is***Italian to English***, where learners are prompted with the Italian words, and look for them in Italian in the grid. For additional consolidation, the grid also features an English word list that they have to complete, really putting students’ knowledge to the test! Students can tell in which direction the words are written by looking at the arrow key on each grid. Having a good bilingual dictionary to hand is also a good idea, as this provides a further focus on developing literacy in both Italian and English, and facilitates learner independence. There is an answer grid for the word search, so that students can check their answers - or use for a little extra help if they need it. Answer keys also provide students with an additional opportunity to engage with language, and they’re a great teacher time-saver too, which is always a good thing! I’ve found that the lists are a great learning support resource, and they’re really popular with students too. They work well when students keep them carefully in learning files or folders for current and future reference. They also work well printed double-sided and laminated for small-group work in class. This list is a first collection of 25 high-frequency Spanish adjectives that I’ve found are ideal for beginner Spanish into intermediate Spanish learning programmes - it’s an important step in language learning to ensure that students quickly develop a useful Spanish adjectives vocabulary bank, are able to recognize Spanish adjectives, and are confident with the meaning of those adjectives in English - at that point we can move swiftly on to looking at adjectival agreement, producing more complex and descriptive language, and using the adjectives in a communicative and practical context, which is essential for progressing in language learning. The purpose of the list isn’t to simply learn all 25 adjectives by rote: it’s a longer-term reference resource that students use for example when they’re writing creatively, preparing written texts, or working with their talk partner to develop speaking skills. My students also use their vocabulary reference lists to help them audit their developing Spanish vocabulary in general. There are two alphabetical lists - one Spanish-English, and one English-Spanish, as I’ve found that most language students prefer to have both as a reference resource. There are two backgrounds to choose from - Spanish flag, which I generally use for Spanish vocabulary display, and plain. The list is a great time-saver for teachers too - if you’re preparing resources focusing on adjectives in Spanish for your students, the list is a good starting point. This word search focuses on the days of the week - it’s perfect for Primary German learners, but I also use it for my KS3 German students - the format is really learner-friendly, as students begin to engage with the written word and essential beginner vocab in German. Answer keys are an integral element of word search activities - I always ensure I create an answer key at the same time. Students get an additional opportunity to work with the language, they work and learn independently, and they definitely enjoy ‘correcting’ their own and particularly each others’ work! PRIMARY LATIN CLUB LATIN FOR CHILDREN LATIN FRUITS & VEGETABLES WORD & PICTURE LIST Ten fruits and ten vegetables in Latin, with both words and pictures - I like to give these to my young beginner learners of Latin, as they can generally more easily assimilate new language and vocabulary when they are able to link it in their memory with a visual image. Children glue them into their Latin vocabulary books, or file them in their Latin vocabulary folders with other vocabulary lists, which gives them an accessible and useful Latin vocabulary reference bank for both class and home learning. We also discuss which fruits we know and like, and those we would like to try. Children like to create their own word and picture dictionary lists, adding to it as they learn more. I don’t necessarily have all the fruits in my teaching and learning plan, but it’s always a good idea to give children opportunity to engage with a***broader range of words and genders***, which they begin to absorb quite naturally. The fruits and vegetables show the gender of each noun, using (m), (f), (n) and (f.pl) to denote masculine, feminine, neuter and feminine plural respectively. This is really useful for promoting discussion about grammatical concepts in Latin, specifically gender of Latin nouns, how they change in the plural form, and the absence of article.
