My students really like to work independently, in pairs and in small groups, and these vocabulary cards enable them to do that. There are lots of games and activities to play, and I’ve described several that are successful with my groups. I’ve found that giving students regular and frequent opportunities to play with the cards, not only when we’re focusing on these particular vocabulary groups, but across the school year, really helps them understand and fully learn the vocabulary.
The 18-page workbook gives students a different way of consolidating their vocabulary - writing it out really helps to embed language, and is great for spelling too. Students can use the same workbook several times by covering previous answers. There are 3 differentiated recall and write challenges, as well as a full alphabetical French-English vocabulary list. My students learn a lot from applying their French practically and creatively with the game card templates. - The workbook is really versatile and useful for a number of learning contexts, such as exam prep and sub lessons.
The written recall challenges are as follows:
= Challenge 1: students write the English word /phrase from a French prompt, with all the words and phrases grouped together in the same category
= Challenge 2: with this challenge, students write the words/phrases in French from an English prompt, and again, they’re all group together in the same category
= Challenge 3: this final challenge ‘switches’ at each question from French to English, and lists words and phrases randomly from each category - I’ve found that this really does encourage my students to think hard about their French vocabulary.

GERMAN CONVERSATION STARTERS #1

Files are non-editable in a zipped format. The resource is copyright, all rights reserved. It may not be copied, rewritten, amended, shared or distributed outside your own classroom in any way. The license for purchase is a single-user license only. Please read the Terms of Use.
This set of German conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner German into intermediate German students. Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning.
The questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the past tenses. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practicing language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning.
Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more generic images. I do use images as much as possible with this kind of activity, not only to provide the prompt, but also to add to the visual appeal of it, which is a real motivator for learning.
I remind students that it is not necessary to tell the truth - the purpose is to create and produce accurate and realistic language. Students can prepare their responses in as much detail as possible on the accompanying planning sheet, remembering that these are conversation starters, so that once they have responded, they should then say something to keep the conversation going.
As a whole-group activity, distribute the cards amongst your students, one or several. Ideally, they should walk around the classroom, asking questions, and swapping cards. For pair or small-group work, students can work in a designated area. This really helps them focus closely on the language, and helps learners who are slightly less confident working with a larger group.
The starters broadly address the following themes:
personal information
family & routines at home
hobbies & free time
likes & dislikes
local environment
food & drink
school & studies
sport & healthy living
countries & languages
weather & seasons

German separable verbs can be quite a challenging concept for English-speaking German learners, and focused practice really helps them consolidate their understanding of how to conjugate them accurately, particularly the location of the separable prefix at the end of the clause , and the various contexts in which the prefix is not separated, such as with subordinating conjunctions and modal verbs.
The questions are all in German, and are differentiated, ranging in complexity and challenge. There may be some vocabulary that students are not familiar with: these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language too. Other grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement direct and indirect objects, personal pronouns and word order in German.
The set comprises the following non-editable files:
= 48 differentiated question cards laminate if possible - the cards are more learner-friendly, and remain in excellent condition for years
= answer key & answer recording sheet we use the recording sheet for more formal assessment purposes; students generally use their class workbooks to note responses, saving both prep time and expense

48 differentiated task cards, focusing on French ER verbs in the present tense. The questions are aimed at advanced beginner French into intermediate French students, and have a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading and spelling. The questions are all in French, and are differentiated, ranging in complexity and challenge. There may be some vocabulary and grammar that students are not yet familiar with, and these questions give them the opportunity to learn and apply new language. This means that the activity is not solely about practicing and consolidating learned language, but also actively engaging with, and learning, new language. A range of grammatical concepts are addressed in the questions too, such as gender agreement, direct and indirect objects and question format in French.
There are translation questions from both French into English and English into French. This introduces students to the concept of translation from a very early point in their French learning programme.
To maximize the learning potential, we look at the multiple-choice questions as a whole-group, identifying not only why there is a single correct response, but what the errors are in the other choices: identifying errors, and explaining precisely why something is inaccurate or incorrect, helps students to think about language a little more laterally, and ensures that they are thinking concepts through, rather than simply relying on learned responses.

99 high-frequency French verbs with 99 matching English verbs cards really do help to create a lively language learning environment, ideal for advanced beginner French learners, as they prepare to move into and work confidently at intermediate French level. The games and activities are a really successful alternative to more traditional vocabulary drilling exercises.
The game cards and accompanying Recall & Write challenges have a multi-skill focus on listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing and spelling. It doesn’t matter if any of the verbs don’t feature in your medium or even longer-term learning plan: this is a great way of encouraging your students to engage with new language, and to build their vocabulary at the same time. This prepares them really well for creative activities in French - they will have a rich vocabulary to choose from.
The Reference, Recall & Write book has 18 pages. It includes an alphabetical French-English reference list of all 99 verbs. The Recall and Write challenges help students familiarise themselves with, and really embed, the range of verbs in the set, and also get used to reading, writing and spelling in French. It’s also a great way of developing literacy skills in French. The challenges can be done several times, as students simply cover previous responses, so they definitely get a lot of use from a single workbook.
There are three differentiated recall challenges:
= Challenge 1: students write the English verbs from a French prompt, with all the verbs in alphabetical order, French-English.
= Challenge 2: again, students write the verbs in English from a French prompt, but the French verbs are now in random, rather than alphabetical order. Language learners often learn or are familiar with new vocabulary in a particular order, so it increases the recall challenge by changing that order.
= Challenge 3: the final challenge requires students to write the corresponding French verb from an English prompt. The English verbs are also in random order. This challenge really helps with vocabulary recall, which is quite challenging when vocabulary does not appear in the context of a sentence. It’s really useful for spelling in French too.

ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS #1
ESL EFL BEGINNER ENGLISH CONVERSATION STARTERS This set of English conversation starters features 100 starters in question format, suitable for advanced beginner English students. Speaking is a language skill that learners tend to find very challenging, and increased engagement with language that requires them to both reproduce language they are already familiar with, and to be creative with that language in order to produce new language is integral to successful language learning.
The questions focus largely on the present tense, with some examples of the present perfect tense. I include tenses we may not have formally covered, as the activity is not solely about practicing language, but also about actively learning it. I encourage students to look for cues and clues in the questions themselves, and this certainly enables them to engage with new or unknown language successfully, and to progress in their learning.
Each card has an image: some of these are specific visual prompts to help students infer meaning; some are more***generic images***.
