This resource pack is designed to provide examples and guidance for a range of writing styles. It highlights the main features and raises questions for the class to discuss.
This pack will address the following learning objectives:
to be able to identify a range of writing styles,
to understand that there are a vast number of writing styles,
and to gain an understanding of the characteristics of newspaper articles and persuasive letters.
This lesson introduces pupils to the techniques used in newspaper reporting.
Pupils will get the opportunity to analyse a story and write their own report, using a photo library.
They will be asked to insert their reports into a newspaper template.
This lesson encourages pupils to think of new vocabulary for descriptive writing. The activities will encourage whole class/group discussion, collaboration and participation.
This resource pack provides a range of activities to explain and reinforce the meaning of compound words.
It should enable pupils to:
understand that a compound word is two smaller words joined together,
look at individual words to make their own compound words,
and identify and create compound words from a list or table of words.
These activities have been designed to support the teaching of English at key stage 2.
The activities will enable the teacher to:
explore the term 'simile,'
share similes with the class,
and provide exercises on new similes using established models.
Within each of the activities further information can be accessed in order to develop pupils' knowledge, support the lesson or for research.
Objectives:
text level - reading comprehension
to understand the use of figurative language in poetry and prose
locate use of simile
This resource pack is designed to encourage pupils to find interesting alternatives to the verb said. Hopefully this will encourage them to use a variety of interesting verbs, bringing their creative writing to life. The lesson contains: an introductory drag-and-drop activity where pupils consider better alternatives, a main game activity where pupils consider a more exciting alternative to a short piece of dialogue and a short poem/song that might encourage pupils to remember possible said alternatives.
This resource pack is designed to provide a range of activities to support the teaching of synonyms. It could either be used as a lesson to introduce or revise the subject or as a means of consolidating various concepts.
This resource pack should enable pupils to:
understand what is meant by the term 'synonym,'
identify synonyms and
use a conventional or online thesaurus.
Included in this pack are a selection of supporting worksheets that can be adapted to suit the age range of the pupils being taught.
This is a collection of work from around 20 teachers. The selection of tasks and products are varied and some may seem eclectic. We hope you will be able to gain possible ideas of how you could further develop your own digital learning resources. Hopefully, some of the material, you will be able to use with limited editing. But the group, take the view that the only perfect resource is the one you develop yourself, to suit your needs, pupils and circumstances. We hope you will find something that fits and is useful.
This interactive whiteboard resource is based on a selection of pictures from the collection at Bodelwyddan Castle. Pictures of industrial scenes are used as the stimulus for discussion and practical work NGfL Cymru is grateful to the Clwyd Fine Art Trust and Joint Area Museum Education Service for allowing works from the collection to be shared amongst schools in Wales.
A resource based on a selection of Peter Prendergast's work from his exhibition 'A Painters Quarry&' held at Oriel Môn in 2006. NGfL Cymru is grateful to Peter Prendergast for allowing his work to be shared amongst schools in Wales.
This interactive whiteboard resource uses a selection of Peter Prendergast’s landscapes and figure studies as the stimulus for discussion, critical analysis and practical work.
A whiteboard resource which enables pupils to respond to the work of several Welsh artists. Pupils study and discuss Rural and Industrial Landscapes and undertake practical work involving drawing from direct observation and 3D perspective
A visual unit that can be used to promote thinking and encourage group discussion about the properties of polygons. Pupils can use the information provided to accurately draw diagrams to represent equilateral, isosceles, right-angled and scalene triangles along with many regular quadrilaterals.
Ideal for KS3
This is a simple open ended shape and space investigation focussing on the formula for the perimeter of a shape. This is an ideal unit to introduce younger KS2 children to maths investigation skills as the patterns are simple to spot. The unit can be used to assess AT1 or as a KS2/3 transition project.
This unit is made up of three mini interactive activities focusing on the properties of 3D shapes. The first activity is based on Euler’s theory. The pupils need to find a rule that links the faces, edges and vertices together. The interactive activity allows them to manipulate the shapes on screen to count the faces, edges and vertices. The second activity has them using their knowledge of the properties of 3D shapes to form a polyhedral chain. The third activity allows the pupils to investigate which edges will meet when a net folds to form a 3D shape.
There is also a starter and plenary.
Interactive whiteboard materials dealing with all aspects of the study of angles: degrees, triangles, parallel lines, construction, angles in polygons.
Animated definitions and worksheets on different areas of angles.
Ideal for KS3 and lower KS4.
A short investigation to find the number of ways the net of a tetrahedron can be coloured using four different colours only once. The unit is split into three sections: How many ways can the net of a tetrahedron be coloured using four different colours only once? How many ways can the net of a tetrahedron be coloured if rotations aren’t allowed? How many ways can a 3D tetrahedron be coloured using four different colours only once?
The Farm takes pupils on a virtual journey of a livestock farm. They see pigs, ducks, hens, horses, cows and sheep. There is a small information screen about each animal and where it lives, and then some activities involving counting animals and matching animals. Pupils can also sing along to the Old MacDonald had a farm nursery rhyme.
Learning objectives:
to recognise and name different sorts of farm animals,
to count to nine,
and to listen to and recall a nursery rhyme.
Look at cars, vans and lorries. designed to teach pupils about positioning and patterns. Users are given coloured cars, vans and lorries and asked to group them in different ways. Then, using basic maps and plans, pupils are invited to move vehicles from one place to another. They are encouraged to think about how to plan and chart journeys and how to give directions to others.
Look at where people live.
The aim of this resource is for the pupils to interactively:
identify objects and rooms within a house,
talk about the town in which they live,
identify animals and items familiar to the countryside,
introduce new vocabulary concerning,
identify the initial sounds of objects,
begin to compare or contrast different localities,
begin to gain an awareness and appreciation of the environment.
The activities will meet the requirements for the ACCAC Desirable Outcomes in Knowledge and Understanding of the World 1, 2, and 9 and Language and Literacy 2 and 7.
