Introduction to clauses - conjunctions, main & subordinate clauses
This is a set of 30 carefully and colourfully created PowerPoint slides introducing clauses. As a teacher, I have often found that students further on in their education lack a solid understanding of this basic element of English. A good understanding of how this building block of sentence formation works is essential for clear and coherent writing. The slides start with basic principles, but slowly move on to more advanced aspects of clauses. The resource covers:
Subject & predicate
Main & subordinate clauses
Co-ordinating conjunctions
Subordinating conjunctions
Common errors (including punctuation, comma splicing & run on sentences)
Conjunctive adverbs (however, therefore, furthermore)
Relative clauses
The resource comes with 5 error-correction worksheets with a total of 50 questions to test student understanding. An answer key is provided.
As always, if you have any questions about this resource please ask away. If you have any problems with the resource or find any typos or other errors, do let me know and I will endeavor to address the issue as soon as possible.

50 high quality PowerPoint slides with fun & attractive visuals and animations
5 verb word search exercises with 10 verbs per exercise
5 verb gap-fill exercises with 10 verbs per exercise

Each gap-fill exercise has a corresponding word search exercise focused on the same verb set. Each exercise pair includes ten verbs, giving a total of fifty common verbs. The exercises begin at an easy level but increase in difficulty, the fifth exercise being the most difficult. Answer keys are provided.
Where possible, verbs have been selected for their descriptiveness. The exercises can be teacher-led or carried out individually or in competitive pairs / groups. At the end, a verb table is provided consisting of 108 strong, descriptive verbs across six categories (speech, movement, emotions, actions, senses & thoughts). Students then have to choose a verb from each of the categories and create sentences with those verbs. Instructions contain suggested follow-up activities.
PPT slides are of a high quality and well-designed with colorful, engaging visuals and fun animation. The presentation is designed to be interactive. It covers ‘doing’ verbs, ‘being’ verbs, ‘state’ verbs and ‘helping’ verbs. A wide range of examples are provided across verb tenses. A series of ‘reference’ slides are included presenting simplified rules of conjugation for tense and person. The final section of the presentation focuses on encouraging students to be creative with verb use by substituting more descriptive verbs for generic ones.

Linguistic devices poster & worksheet with examples and activities
This document includes a two-page poster with 18 of the most commonly used linguistic devices including a definition and statement of effect or purpose and a worksheet with examples and activities to assist understanding and retention. When teaching linguistic devices I have been struck by how quickly students forget them and / or mix them up. Often they are able to name the devices but are not as able to grasp the intended use or effect on the reader. For that reason I have found it useful to have a poster on the wall covering the main devices and to reinforce understanding with activities such as the ones here.
The first activity is one where students are given the device name and have to provide a definition and statement of effect / purpose, together with an example.
The second activity is one where students are given a definition and have to match that with the appropriate name from a box below.
The third activity similarly has students matching an example of the device in use with the appropriate name.
At the end of the document there is also a list of sample sentence stems which students can use when performing analysis.
I am always happy to receive feedback as to how these materials worked for you. If you have any questions or problems with the materials please let me know and I will seek to address them as soon as possible. All materials are proofread twice but if you do come across any mistakes or typos just leave a comment so I can amend and update. Thanks.
