Treasure Hunt - Laws of Indices

(6)
I created this resource to revise the Laws of Indices with my GCSE Year 10 group. It includes 15 cards which lead on from one to the next. I plan to scatter them around the classroom and allow the students to search for the next 'clue'! (The treasure is that the revision is actually fun!)

Ratio Recipe! - introduction activity

(4)
I created this brief activity to introduce the topic of ratio and proportion. It is both a fun starter and a quick way to assess which of the students already understand the concepts. Added advantage: no-one could ask 'where do you need this topic in real life?'!! NOTE: do not try out this recipe! It is a product of my imagination. :)

Drawing to Scale - Introduction Activity

(1)
In order to introduce the topic of Scale Drawings, I have created this worksheet to assist them in producing a scale drawing of our classroom, by counting their steps and using a scale of 1cm:1footstep. An introduction that will 'get them going' and having fun at the same time!

Cancelling Down Algebraic Terms -Simple

(2)
I found that my KS3 students had difficulty canceling down basic algebraic fractions (ie single terms, even without any factorising involved). I created this guided worksheet to address that and it really helped! Needs teacher guidance - I worked stage by stage with them on it.

These activities are designed to consolidate your students’ knowledge of long multiplication, after demonstrating the method. Maximum practice with minimum teacher input - what could be better?

Drawing Pie Charts Class Activity

In this fun classroom activity, creating a pie chart is structured as an investigation. Students must collect data from their classmates and follow the step-by-step instructions to create a pie chart using the information they have gathered. Start to end, a fun way of reviewing the basics of drawing a pie chart!

Decimal Places and Unnecessary Zero

Starting to work in decimal places is great fun, but I kept coming across the ‘unnecessary zero’ problem: too many of my students were making errors in writing out numbers. They would leave out zeroes that needed to be there (think about .9 instead of 0.9) or alternatively answer 7.100 for a question such as 7100÷100. I created this lesson in order to clarify when a zero should be used, and when it is not necessary.

Statistics and Data Terminology

Statistics and data make a fun change from algebra and geometry, but boy, is there a lot of new vocabulary. Here you can download a range of activities, flashcards and quizzes to familiarize your students with the terminology they’ll need to pass their GCSEs with flying colours… statistically proven! ;)
