A selection of “Retrieval Activities” based around GCSE Studio French Module 1 For each 2 page spread in the chapter (including Point de Départ pages), there are 2 powerpoint slides which can be used to help students recap previously learned vocabulary and structures: a) “Cinq par Jour” - a selection of 5 questions ranging from single word / short phrase translation to an open ended question for students to answer in French b) A retrieval grid of 16 items for students to translate. Items are colour-coded and worth between 1 and 4 points depending on difficulty. An easy way to measure progress over time and incorporate an element of competition into lessons. Ideal as no-prep starters or a “refresh your memory” interval in a double lesson!

Help your students get to grips with those high-frequency words they can never remember! The students choose a square using a letter and number combination e.g. D3, A4, C6. Encourage the students either to translate the job, or make it more difficult by asking for a sentence with the word or phrase in that square. If the student is successful, click on the square to reveal whether there is a ship underneath. You can reward the student or the student’s team with a point if they hit a ship. You can reward the student or the student’s team with several points if they sink the ship. For example, if the ship covers three squares, award the students three points.

Do your students need help to spot their own mistakes? Why not try the Past Tense Verb Auction? Students start with 100 points. They must decide if the 15 sentences are correct or incorrect. They must bid points according to how certain they are of their decision. For example they could bid 100 points that the sentence is correct, or 50 points that it is incorrect Each slide contains 6 built in timers so the teacher can decide how long the students have in order to place their bids.
