I have been a drama and dance teacher for 25 years and have been Head of Drama at two schools. I am a GCSE Drama examiner, run musical theatre clubs, direct community productions and work as a practitioner at the Minack Theatre, Cornwall's open-air theatre under the stars. MY resources range from exam to KS3 schemes of work and stand alone lessons and offer drama and movement, various styles and scope for response, development, devising and evaluation.

This complete scheme of work uses three different stimuli to inspire students to devise drama based on the theme of ‘Captives’. The scheme which would last between 6 and 8 lessons depending on length includes opportunities for discussion, exploration, devising, rehearsing, performance and evaluation. Connected warm-ups and exercises are included and tasks range from pair, trio and group work sizes. This scheme of work explores the play based on the much loved book by David Almond. It includes connected games and warm ups and group tasks using choral work, movement and vocal skills to explore plot, characters and themes. Tasks are linked to the text and off-text work and use many dramatic techniques. Questions are suggested for evaluation after each task and the scheme lasts four to five lessons depending on their length.

This unit of work uses paintings as a stimulus to create effective drama. This four lesson scheme of work includes warm-ups and practical activities to inspire the creation of character, plot and dialogue. THree paintings are included in the powerpoint to allow the students to create a three scene piece of drama: before the painting, the actual painting and after the painting. Movement and music could also be added to enhance the drama. The paintings I have used are: ‘Nighthawks’ by Edward Hopper ‘The Fight Between Carnival and Lent’ by Pieter Bruegel the Elder ‘First Class’ by LS Lowry But this unit would work with many others of your own choice.

This workshop includes Whooshing the story for students not familiar with the plot. Connected warm-ups are included and then Still Images/Tableaux to explore themes of the play. The students can then create scenes from the play which can then be joined together to create a whole class performance of the play.
