Slum survivor diary entry level descriptors

Teach a lesson on poverty cycle (L6), and then following lesson (L7), students should watch the 40min video 'Slum Survivors&' from youtube and make notes to help them complete this task (L8). The task and level descriptors are written on the sheet. The aim was to develop empathy but also to look at causes, effects, and solutions to the poverty cycle. Given to Yr 9. Students had looked at social, economic, and environmental categorisations prior to this. Images used from a free sample of a Nelson-Thornes pdf.

OCR 'B' F761 Cold Environments Lessons

Cold Environments Topic. Heavily based on past exam questions (in powerpoints). L1 - far more interactive L2 - a bit chalk and talk as was running out of ideas! L3 - erosional and depositional landforms - playdoh! L4 - need Blue Planet DVD L5 - exam practice L6 - start to look at 3 main case studies for development L7 - Conflict in Alaska L8 - requires internet research Thanks to producers of linked material. (Orange book is Raw - Philip Allan textbook, yellow/blue book is Dove et al - OCR textbook)

Why are deserts located where they are?

This is a lesson via powerpoint which explains a hot desert climate. This is a second lesson into deserts having done a general intro beforehand. You may wish to use the red Interactions book to support this lesson. The lesson starts with students describing the location and by the end they should be able to explain too. This powerpoint includes an excellent animation (which I cannot take credit for) which shows students the air flow around the Earth.

Why do people live near volcanoes?

This is an ICT research task which requires students to access a page from The Geography Site by David Robinson. (Whilst no material has been copied from this site, I was unable to contact the author to ask for permission when citing the website.) Students should choose sheet depending on their attainment. Sheets A+B should have written answers put into books, whereas students write on Sheet C. The exercise was partly designed to get students to write in full sentences. It was aimed at Year 9 students of all abilities.

Used for students to stand under when considering the future of Antarctica. The lesson is on the Discovering Antarctica website, with Sydney Suit and Laura Leaf.

Can you get different types of rainfall?

(1)
The 3 posters should be displayed outside your classroom and students in groups should recreate these posters from memory. Aimed at KS3 studying weather. Instructions are on powerpoint. Please see my other resource on rainfall for alternative activity on 3 types of rainfall, including predicting weather by looking at the clouds - 'Can clouds predict weather?&'.

Geography level descriptors

There are lots of different ones on TES but I thought I would add my contribution to geography level descriptors. Each level is a mountain with skills on how to reach the peak. It's a bit cheesy.

Snake and Ladders aid and development

(1)
Notes under slides. Essentially, you look at the things the prevent development and aid development, and then the students make their own snakes and ladders game from it. Totally ripped from the blue Basics book. An extension is for them to write out the instructions and explain the meaning of the game.

I will be using at the end of each topic for students to review their knowledge. These two sheets break down all the concepts/key questions/content that should be covered. Students should read the table at the top for instructions: tick if happy, question mark if unsure, cross if more needs doing in the area. Copied from OCR materials.

Whydoes Omar get paid so little to make footballs?

(2)
A lesson aimed at Year 7 which is based on work from Geog.1. The lesson explores a boy from Pakistan who makes footballs and why is he trapped in this viscious circle. Students I've taught have really loved the &'What if...&'; discussion. Normally get them to discuss with person next to them for 2 mins then feedback, then move onto next one. All resources and a lesson plan and powerpoint included.

UPDATED: Students mark their own books

*Ofsted rated outstanding for impact Feb 2015* Students should glue in the guide to gaining gorgeous geography book at the start of the academic year in the front of their books. When you wish to take in their books to mark, give them a book review form, and they can use the ideas from the boxes in the guide to fill in their sheets with 2xWWW and 2xEBI. This makes them take ownership and reflect and also saves you time when marking. Tried and tested.

Polar animal adaptations level descriptors

Level descriptors and the task are written on the sheet. I am setting this as a practise assessment for year 7 over the half term, but could be used as a real assessment for Ecosystems or Antarctic topic. They have spent two lessons looking at polar animal adaptations by researching on the internet and looking at clips from Blue Planet.

Involves using school corridors as 'river channels&' in practical element when students work out hydraulic radius. Includes Manning&';s formula and breaks it down into easy speak - hopefully! Also Bradshaw Model and relevant exam questions. Plus, links to Hjulstrom Curve websites.
