Class Assembly: Don't Judge a Book by its Cover.

My most recent class assembly was based on Theseus and the Minotaur (with a twist). We had covered this story during our topic of myths https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/myths-understanding-the-features-11943412 and the children LOVED it. I wrote this play script based on the myth however we added a little twist. The minotaur is known to be a FEARSOME, UGLY creature, but in our story he turns out to be nice once people get to know him. Moral: Don’t judge a book by its cover. The play script is editable to ensure that there is enough lines for the children in your class. I have 25 and there is 25 parts. However, it is an easy script to edit and adapt. To tie it all together, we sang ‘Eye of the Tiger’ in the middle of the performance which went down a treat with the parents and the school. Masks NOT included This resource contains the script ONLY and in total the play lasted about 15 minutes. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did and please let me know how you and your class got on.

These spellings are based off the statutory spellings of the English National Curriculum 2014. Children in years 3&4 are expected to spell these words by the end of Year 4, and in my classroom, we try to learn and familiarise ourselves with them as much as possible. With this resource, I print, laminate and cut up these words and have them in a basket or box in the classroom. As a starter to guided reading or any English lesson really, I take out the basket and give each table 5 words to focus on. They discuss the words and the spelling patterns, along with the meaning. This way the words are familiar to them. To increase children’s use of these words, any time they use one of them in their writing, they are encouraged to underline it to show they can spell it. Thus, the spelling of my year 4s has greatly improved, thank god! This resource comes with 109 words in both yellow and black and white. Please leave a review and let me know your thoughts. Multiplication and Division: Differentiated Activities

My Division and Multiplication differentiated resource has been bundled together at a reduced price! DIFFERENTIATED DIVISION FOR 4 GROUPS When teaching division this week, I struggled to find a resource in which I needed. In Mathematics, I like a resource to be differentiated, while allowing the children to move up to a higher set themselves, if they find the work too easy. This resource allows children to make great progress in one lesson as they can be challenged constantly, rather than completing page after page of the same type of calculation. My class have not yet moved onto long division, so it is differentiated by: Bronze: No remainders or carry ons. Silver: Harder division calculations with some remainders. Gold: All with remainders and involving all times tables. Upon finishing the gold section, there is an additional section called platinum. This section allows a further challenge for children in completing ‘missing calculation’ division questions, ‘reasoning and explanation’ questions and ‘spot the mistakes’ questions (answers included). It’s based off Maths Mastery ideas. These files have been saved as a PDF and include answers. DIFFERENTIATED MULTIPLICATION FOR 4 GROUPS* When teaching multiplication this week, I struggled to find a resource in which I needed. In Mathematics, I like a resource to be differentiated, while allowing the children to move up to a higher set themselves, if they find the work too easy. This resource allows children to make great progress in one lesson as they can be challenged constantly, rather than completing page after page of the same type of calculation. My class have not yet moved onto 2 digit multiplication, so it is differentiated by: Bronze: TO x O (focusing mainly on the 2, 3, 4 and 5 times tables) Silver: HTO x O (using a range including the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables) Gold: THHTO x O (using a range including the 6, 7, 8 and 9 times tables) Upon finishing the gold section, there is an additional section called platinum. This section allows a further challenge for children in completing missing calculation multiplication questions (answers included). I have provided the success criteria at the top of the page, as I like to remind children constantly what they need to remember to do. These files have been saved as a PDF and a word document.

As shown on my Instagram (Rebecca.the.irish.teacher), here is my interactive Maths display! As seen in the picture, it contains: Maths Display Heading Maths Vocabulary for Addition and Subtraction (not photographed) Headings for ‘Make it’ ‘Layout’ and ‘Solve it’ to encourage children to represent the calculations in different ways. Signs to promote reasoning skills: ‘What’s the same’, ‘What’s different’ ‘Can you order these numbers?’ sign. Clothes to hang on a string with space to write a new number each week. The idea is to involve the children in the maths display to keep their skills fresh, vocabulary strong and reasoning skills constant. If there’s any vocabulary you would like added, please let me know and I can add them in. Lastly, this product is in Black and White. I printed them on colored paper!

Resources, plan, presentation and SPAG. This week of lessons really helped bring on the children's descriptive writing. The video clips help them to imagine things clearer and bring great life to their writing. I found it really successful. It focuses on getting the children to use their sense to imagine what a scene looks like. SPAG lesson is on prepositions and this presentation was accumulated from TES website also. A 5 day lesson plan based on instructions. Three of the days are based on children evaluating and creating instructions through video clips and practical activities (making paper airplanes and origami fortune tellers). Two of the days are focused on comprehension and handwriting. The children will be taught how to write successful instructions by understanding that they need to use clear, simple English for their reader to understand clearly what they are directing them to do.

A 3 day series of lessons on suspense and mystery. These lessons allow children to write in a suspense style by using ellipses, short sentences and making the reader think that there is something hidden. These lessons involve video clips and setting a spooky scene my turning off the lights during the reading of these paragraphs. These playscripts allow children to create their own play while learning the features of the play-script also. I have attached fairy tales that are turned into playscripts. The features that they will learn how to use are: *Cast list * Scene Headings * Character name and : * Stage Directions The first lesson allows children to create their own list of the features of a playscript by finding them themselves. This exploratory, paired learning works best when it comes to the end product at the end of the week. Children are encouraged to choose a fairytale that they already know to alter slightly, to make the actual story part easier. There is a SPAG lesson included also on adverbs. This will help children to use them for the stage directions also.

This is a weeks worth of planning, resources and presentations based on imaginary settings. Children will be creating their own imaginary world in which they will need to know inside out to write about. To make it more interesting, children will need to pretend that they are Horrid Henry entering their own imaginary land. I taught these lessons this week and they worked very well. Children loved creating their own worlds in which they could bring Horrid Henry into it. There is planning stages to these lessons also which allow children time to edit their worlds for the ‘big write’ at the end of the week. The Heliocentric Model- this lesson teaches children about another model of the Solar System in which was believed by another Ancient Scientist. This lesson requires children to make a jigsaw of the model and figure out which planets have been included/left out. There is also an aspect of role play, for children to act as the planets rotating around the sun. Included: *A powerpoint presentation *A jigsaw activity where children re-make the heliocentric model. *A detailed lesson plan. *True and false statements to sort. *LESSON PLAN ONLY** I have chosen to only upload the lesson plan here as sometimes, people may want to use their own resources. I will upload them at in a different resource in my shop. This lesson plan clear, detailed and differentiated extremely well. My differentiation groups are labelled bronze, silver and gold, which are referred to daily on the planning. The objectives covered on this plan are: *What are multiples and factors? *What are prime numbers and prime factors? *What are prime and composite numbers? *How do I solve problems involving multiplication? *How do I solve problems involving division? I have taught these lessons myself, and the children achieved the lesson objectives at their own level of ability.

Shared/Guided Reading lesson based on the story ‘Journey to Jo’Burg’. This was used to inspire these kids and completely engage them with the story. My idea is for the starter, display three questions (see planning) and get them to write their answers in groups on post-it notes. Then stick them up on the IWB on a picture of South Africa (also in resources). This will engage them straight away with the text and what’ll happen. Then you’ll move on to explaining that the idea is to focus on what a dilemma is and what it is in this chapter. (The chapter is linked on the planning and you can download it as a pdf). The children should have a hard copy in front of them and together you will make a success criteria of what a good, interesting reader sounds like. Get them to critique you reading in a boring way. Children to sort pre-made laminated statements into positives and negatives about going to Jo’Berg. In groups children will then engage in a conscience alley (role-play) to thrash out both sides of a dilemma. You can do it as a whole class or small groups either. Children really get into the story this way and feel they’re helping Naledi choose her dilemma. Great, engaging lesson. Really enjoyed it!
