Introducing a set of seven engaging comprehension tasks designed for Key Stage 2 students, each themed around events that take place during the autumn term. These tasks incorporate a variety of question types, including inference, summarising, and retrieval, encouraging students to deepen their understanding of the texts. Each task includes detailed answers to streamline the marking process, making it easier for educators to provide timely feedback.
These comprehension tasks are based on Chapters 1- 7 of The Twits by Roald Dahl and are designed as a morning activity for the children to complete as they settle in for the day. Each day, I read a part of The Twits before the end of the day, and the following morning, the children answer the comprehension questions once the chapter is finished. This activity includes a range of questions, including retrieval, inference, prediction, summarising, and vocabulary, with varying levels of difficulty.
The resource can also be used for guided reading sessions, providing an opportunity to engage students in discussions about the text and support their comprehension development.
Answers have been included so marking is less onerous. This resource is also great for parents to use at home with their children.
A Word document and PDF file of the task has been included so the questions can be edited easily.
This collection of 6 short comprehension tasks is designed for Year 5 children, focusing on key reading skills such as vocabulary, retrieval, explanation, prediction, and summarising. Each task is based on engaging texts that challenge students to think critically about the material while strengthening their reading comprehension abilities. Answers are provided for each task to make marking simple and efficient, perfect for both classroom and home use. I have used these several times with my own classes.
This set of 6 comprehension tasks is designed for Year 3 children and focuses on non-fiction texts. Each task includes a text followed by a variety of questions aimed at developing key reading comprehension skills such as inference, retrieval, vocabulary understanding, prediction, and summarising. The topics are engaging and varied, covering:
The Great Wall of China
Pollution in the Oceans
The Stone Age
The Amazon Rainforest
Additional high-interest non-fiction topics
The questions are tailored to challenge and improve children’s understanding of the text in a structured way. Answers are provided for each task, making it easier for teachers or parents to assess children’s work quickly and accurately. This resource is perfect for classroom use or independent learning.
This pack of 6 comprehension tasks is tailored to develop key reading skills through a variety of engaging texts. The questions focus on the following essential skills:
Vocabulary Students will explore new words in context, enhancing their understanding of language. They will identify the meaning of unfamiliar words, use context clues, and explore synonyms and antonyms to deepen their word knowledge.
Inference: Carefully designed questions encourage students to read between the lines, making inferences about characters’ feelings, motivations, and events in the story. This helps students engage more critically with the text and think beyond what is directly stated.
Prediction: Students are prompted to make predictions based on information provided in the text. These questions challenge them to think about what might happen next and explain their reasoning using clues from the text.
Explanation: Explanation questions require students to clarify their understanding of particular parts of the text, such as why characters behave in certain ways or why events unfold as they do. This fosters a deeper understanding of the narrative and its underlying themes.
Retrieval: These questions focus on recalling and retrieving specific details from the text, helping students develop the ability to locate and recall important facts or descriptions.
Summarising: Students practice condensing key ideas into concise summaries, focusing on the main points of a passage while discarding unnecessary details. This skill helps them develop clarity and precision in their reading.
Each comprehension is complete with answers, making it easy for teachers to assess progress. While personalised to suit the needs of my own Year 5 class, the pack is easily adaptable for other groups, ensuring flexibility in meeting different learning needs. Ideal for daily lessons, guided reading sessions, or homework tasks, this pack will support the development of essential reading comprehension skills throughout the school year.
‘Find Someone Who’ is a lively icebreaker game perfect for older kids in the classroom or adults on training days. Each participant receives a list of prompts, such as ‘Find someone who has traveled to another country’ or ‘Find someone who plays a musical instrument.’ Players must mingle and ask each other questions to find people who fit the descriptions. It encourages communication, breaks down barriers, and helps participants get to know one another in a fun and interactive way. Here, you have 6 unique pages to get the conversation flowing between peers.
This two-week lesson plan is designed for Year 3 students, combining narrative writing skills with cross-curricular links to the Stone Age history topic. Each day focuses on developing different elements of storytelling—setting, characters, problems, and solutions—within a Stone Age context. The lessons are scaffolded to gradually build students’ ability to write their own narratives, from brainstorming ideas and creating story maps to writing, editing, and improving their stories. Differentiated activities cater to various ability levels, ensuring all students can engage with and succeed in the tasks. The lessons encourage creativity, historical understanding, and literacy development, culminating in a complete Stone Age-themed narrative by the end of the two weeks.
