My Memory Jar
Children take part in a circle time activity to discuss what ‘memory’ means.
Children think about their favourite memory with their family, in school and the most important lesson that they have learned.
Differentiate by:
Lowers - draw pictures & staff label pictures
Middle - draw pictures and try spelling independently/copy key words from a white board
Top - draw pictures and write sentence independently.
Editable Word document and PDF copies are included.
Children will draw a picture of themselves when they start Reception.
The picture is added to their learning journey.
It is lovely to compare their drawings from starting Reception, to the end of Reception.
Pictures for every letter of the alphabet.
I put these in my sound box at the start of the year.
Children add things around the classroom to the boxes.
Labels for phase 3 sound boxes

Circle time question
Differentiate through over writing, under writing and copying from a model.
Article 12 - You have the right to give your opinion, and for adults to listen and take it seriously.
Literacy
P4C
Recognising capital letters - highlight the letters that they recognise. Easy indicator of what letters to work on.
Reading zero to twenty. Tick when children are able to read these key words.
I do these assessments at the end of each full term. I then make groups of children to focus on similar sounds/numbers.
There is also a differentiated follow up maths worksheet for children to practise reading the numbers zero to twenty.
Early Years - Reception Writing Template
Genre - Instruction Writing
How to play a triangle.
Our topic was music/sound - ‘What’s that sound?’
Introduction
We had a letter from Y2 asking us to teach them how to play a triangle.
We played the triangle.
We wrote instructions as a class on an A2 piece of sugar paper.
3 Differentiated worksheets
Top group - write sentences independently - word mat to help with tricky spellings. Draw pictures of each step independently.
Middle group - fill in the missing bossy verb (word mat included but you can add your own).
Lower group - cut and stick the pictures and writing in order. They were able to order the numbers.
You will need to get 4 pots. Put 1 pasta shell in one, 2 in another, 3 in another and 4 in the last one. Label them a, b, c, d. The children will need to shake the pot and predict how many pasta shells there are in each pot. They will then open the pot to see how many shells are in the pot, to compare their prediction with the result.

3 Differentiated Worksheets - Reception/Early Years
What’s that sound?
1 - 4 sounds
2 - 6 sounds
3 - 8 sounds
I had a feely bag with different instruments and classroom resources inside. I used one resource at a time. I shook the bag for the children to listen to the sound. My lower ability children drew pictures and I scribed for them (listen to 4 sounds). My middle group drew pictures and initial sounds of what they thought the sound was (listen to 6 sounds). My top ability group drew pictures and spelled phonetically (listen to 8 sounds). MAT wrote in full sentences.
I used some instruments such as bells, drums, a triangle; as well as classroom resources such as pencils, rulers, crayons. Children thought that pencils sounded like claves. They also thought wooden building blocks sounded like claves. We talked about the material that they are made out of. I also used crisps, marbles, and numicon shapes.
Reception - Recognise Numbers to 10
Highlight/tick the number as you show your child flash cards.
Write/type your children’s names along the left side of the table.
I also use this to assess number formation. I make notes about reversing numbers or poor formation in the comments box.
I send this worksheet home with Tedi Twt’s story sack every Friday for the weekend. The children write the name of the Tedi Twt book that they read, and answer the questions. We share the worksheet and talk about Tedi Twt’s weekend on Monday during news.
Spider Web Phonics
Group activity / game.
Each child needs a board and a spider.
Start with the spider in the middle of the board.
An adult will need to shout out a letter. The children need to move their spider to the sound that they hear.
I’ve attached 2 copies - a PDF & and editable Word document to change the sounds
Reception Science Experiment
Float or sink?
As part of our harvest topic, we carried out an experiment to see which harvest food floated or sunk to the bottom of the water tray.
Top group - made predictions before carrying out the experiment
Middle group - drew pictures on a table to illustrate the outcome
Bottom group - circled the food that sunk.
