Lessons based around part one of the novel Of Mice and Men used with a year 9 class. Focuses on context, predictions, setting and the relationship between George and Lennie.
This lesson was used for a high ability year 9 class who are learning how to analyse an extract in the style of the new GCSE exam. I have attached a model response along with a differentiated extract for analysis.
Two lessons that explore model paragraphs responding to an extract from Act 2:2 and a lesson that looks at the role of the friar in Act 2:3. Also explores the theme of age V youth and has an opportunity for hot seating.
A bundle of extracts for students to use for revision or for you to scaffold a lesson from. Each extract has a specific AO1, AO2 and AO3 focus and the extracts cover different themes and different characters.
Good to use as a starter
Instructions:
Students complete as many connections as they can (in rows/columns/diagonal) between the images finding an ‘odd one out’.
E.g. row c = two metaphors Romeo uses for Juliet = angel/sun but ‘foot’ is uttered by Juliet
All images relate to a quote/image mentioned in the opening of Act 2:2
This resource pack includes a full lesson(s) on how to analyse a key extract. This skill is now applicable for the new specification GCSE so it is important that KS3 learners are embedding this learning early on.
I have found that this lesson worked well with a year 9 class, so it can be used for high ability KS3 learners. However, I have also found it could work as part of Paper 1A as a practice extract.
I use this frame as a lesson starter and place an image in the middle relating to the lesson topic.
This can be used to develop students questioning techniques or to 'hook' students as they enter a lesson.
Can be used for any subject.
A bundle of extracts for students to use for revision or for you to scaffold a lesson from. Each extract has a specific AO1, AO2 and AO3 focus with highlighted sections to help. You can also removed the highlighted quotations for differentiation.
This bundle contains over 20 worksheets that allow students to analyse the key quotations in the novella. Each PPT contains several key quotes in relation to the themes:
- Time
- Supernatural
- Blame and guilt
- Isolation
The sheets themselves work on all of the Assessment Objectives (AO1/AO2/AO3) and ask students to analyse the language of the quotations whilst linking them to context.
A differentiated set of worksheets for students to complete as they analyse a key extract from Act 2:2. The students then discuss Romeo in the rest of the play using key quotations. Each box has a specific AO in reference to the mark scheme.
Each worksheet has an extract from the section of the play with a focus question. The boxes around each extract have a key AO focus (AO1/AO2/AO3) and some worksheets are differentiated.
The questions cover a variety of characters and themes and are taken from key sections therefore allowing students to study the breadth of the text.
These could be used together as a revision pack for year 11 students.
