Take the confusion out of algebra wit this fun outdoor activity where the students will simplify and solve differentiated algebraic problems. They will be given a task card containing an equation which will consist of sticks, leaves and numbers.
They must first simplify the equation by creating it on the playground using stick, leaves and chalk before writing a possible solution to the algebraic equation underneath. It’s a great lesson to introduce students to solving equations and representing numbers through letters / objects.
This pack contains 24 differentiated task cards (1 - 10 are simple equations and 11 - 20 are more complex).

This activity is great to get your children active and learning about coordinates while developing basic mapping skills. They also get to eat chocolate!
For this activity to work you need to go onto Google Maps Satellite (or similar) and zoom into your school or grounds that you want to use. Print screen the page, paste it onto a document, change the size so that it fits into half an A4 page and then print enough for your class. The students will cut and stick the bird’s eye view of the grounds onto their sheet before drawing the coordinate grid lines over the top.
Before the lesson you’ll need to buy the correct amount of small eggs for your class (5 per child). You can also get the students to initial each egg (or another way to identify) so they don’t collect the wrong ones! Once the students have hidden the eggs and filled in the coordinates they can swap sheets with a partner and go on the egg hunt.

The insect trap investigation gets students looking closely at all the amazing creepy crawlies that can be found in your outdoor space by creating small traps. It’s great if you’re looking at living things, habitats, or data handling as well as developing key investigation skills.
**Ages 4 - 6: **Students will set the traps and observe what they collect. At this age it’s great for them to explore the wildlife, talking about their looks, how they move, key features, and other general observations. Once they’ve had time to study what they’ve trapped they can compete the observation sheet where they’ll draw what they’ve collected.
**Ages 7 - 9 & 10 - 12: **Students will set the traps and wait to see what crawls inside (checking each day for a few days. They’ll identify the creatures and record their results on the results table. They can then use their results to create a bar graph of their findings (you can choose to accumulate all the results or just use individuals). After that, get them to complete the evaluation question sheets which will encourage them to think about how successful their traps were and the reasons behind their results.

These outdoor division task cards are a great way to give your class lots of practice at division using their chosen method. Each card contains a division problem that they will need to solve in your outdoor space.
In order to solve these problems, measure the given length stated on the task card using an appropriate method (string, ruler, etc.) and then divide the length by the length of the specified object (leaf, stick, or stone). For example, if the length of the playground was 25 meters and the length of a stick was 50cm, the division would be 25,000 / 50. This resource can be differentiated by getting the students to use the method of division best suited to their ability.
We find this activity is best done in pairs so that they can scaffold each others learning.
