Outdoor fall PSHE lesson.
“Trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let things go.”
Trees in autumn are a great metaphor when thinking about how good it can be to let things go be it bad habits or forgiving those that have been mean to us.
This is a great PSHE lesson to do this autumn where your students will think about what they would like to let go.
Talk to your students about what they may want to let go this autumn and leave behind them. Maybe they could let go saying mean things, not sharing, not letting others join in a game, or forgive somebody who has upset them.
Once they’ve thought about four things they can let go get them to record them on the activity sheet (one per leaf).
Once they’ve completed the sheet get them to go outside and find four big leaves from the ground and write the four things they are going to let go. Once the class have all finished writing on the leave you can let them throw the leaves in the air to symbolise letting go.

These outdoor division task cards are a great way to give your class lots of practice at division using their chosen method. Each card contains a division problem that they will need to solve in your outdoor space.
In order to solve these problems, measure the given length stated on the task card using an appropriate method (string, ruler, etc.) and then divide the length by the length of the specified object (leaf, stick, or stone). For example, if the length of the playground was 25 meters and the length of a stick was 50cm, the division would be 25,000 / 50. This resource can be differentiated by getting the students to use the method of division best suited to their ability.
We find this activity is best done in pairs so that they can scaffold each others learning.

For this outdoor science investigation your students will become weather forecasters using only the clouds! Different kinds of clouds can give us a very good indication as to what weather is likely to follow. Your students will keep a record of the cloud types as well as the weather which follows for a few days / week before analysing their data to see if they can spot any patterns between the cloud types and the type of weather which follows.
This investigation is great if you’re looking at weather, forecasting, pattern spotting, and investigation skills. Before you start the investigation, explain that before modern weather forecasts many people would depend on their knowledge of the clouds to predict the weather and help to keep them safe.
Get the students to complete the table, recording the cloud types and the weather in the following days.
Once they’ve done this for a good amount of time (9 or 10 days) they can then look at their data and see if they can spot any relationships between the cloud types and the weather which followed.
Once they’ve analysed their data they can complete the investigation evaluation questions.
Extension - Get them to complete the research sheet to see if their results were correct.
Before you get the students to do their diary, it’s worth looking at the weather forecast to try and choose a period with varied weather.

Subtraction boards are a fun and practical way for your early learners to practice simple subtraction outside. For this activity they will complete the differentiated questions by collecting the correct amount of objects (shown above question) to represent the subtraction and placing it over the top of the square.
Once they have completed all four subtractions on the board you can get them to take a photo for a record or write out the subtractions with pictures and answers on some paper.
This activity is a great physical and visual way to help them understand subtraction in a concrete way.
It’s best to either laminate the boards or print them out on thick card so they can be used multiple times. We leave them in our outdoor space so students can come and choose them as they like during free-flow activities.
