Teach sentence structure with this fun outdoor scavenger hunt. Each sentence is split into three parts. Simply hide the sentence cards around your outdoor area and get your class to collect the cards and create the sentences. Once they’ve created a sentence they can write it down on the differentiated sentence record sheets. This activity will give your students lots of practice at counting between 1 and 20 as they collect natural items and explore the outdoors. It’s a great way to use concrete resources to support the learning of number recognition and counting. Simply print off the cards (either on card or laminate the paper) and place them around your outdoor space. Your students can then go around and pile the correct amount of items on top of each card. These challenges are a great addition to your light and shadow unit. They will get your students exploring shadows in a fun and practical way as they attempt to complete each of the challenges on the cards. These challenges encourage self-discovery and independent thinking as well as teaching them how shadows are created and the influence that the angle of light has on the shadow. This activity works best on a sunny day first thing in the morning when the sun is lower in the sky so that the shadows are larger. These cards contain a main challenge as well as some having an extension to the task (written in purple) for more of a challenge. Cards 1 - 10 are more simple activities. Cards 10 - 20 are more complex. Some of these cards work much better when students are working in a small group. For the cards where students are required to make their own shadows, it’s really effective if you get them to use chalk to draw around the shadow they’ve created. Digital version: You could get them to take photos of their shadows and upload it to the Google Slides. There is also a printable answer sheet where they can record their challenges. Sticks are a great resource when looking at shape, angles, and lines. These task cards / slides get your students building shapes using sticks based on a set of criteria (for example it must contain 2 right angles). Using the task cards: Place the cards in your outdoor space for your students to find. They will then build the shape using sticks and either take a picture of it or draw their shape. Slides: Students can take an I-pad outside and create the shapes using sticks, take a photo of their shapes, and upload it onto the correct slide. Take the confusion out of algebra wit this fun outdoor activity where the students will simplify and solve differentiated algebraic problems. They will be given a task card containing an equation which will consist of sticks, leaves and numbers. They must first simplify the equation by creating it on the playground using stick, leaves and chalk before writing a possible solution to the algebraic equation underneath. It’s a great lesson to introduce students to solving equations and representing numbers through letters / objects.
