Shape builder is a great activity for shape recognition as well as looking at the properties of shapes. The students will head outside and create the shapes on the card using sticks before completing the shape ID card with its properties. This resource contains differentiated shape ID cards. Woodland tracker is a great way to investigate which animals are sneaking around in your outdoor space or local woodland. It’s a great activity if you’re looking at observation skills or habitats and can be differentiated for all age ranges. For this practical science investigation students will mark out an area using sand or fine soil and leave it overnight before returning to see if they can spot and identify any animal tracks that have been left behind. This can be done as a one off investigation or as an ongoing project where you could introduce different variables such as location, season or food. Become a police officer for a day while students use their measuring, division, and number skills to work out how fast cars are going in a chosen area using formulas and conversions. For this activity your class will measure out a stretch of road before timing cars and using formulas to figure out the speed that the car is moving. They will collect a set of results in a table before creating a bar graph to clearly represent their data. After the investigation they will be given some evaluation questions to answer about what they’ve found out. This is a fantastic real-world math investigation for those aspiring police officers! Autumn is a wonderful time of year where there are a lot of changes happening. This can be a fantastic opportunity to look at poetry and description. These lessons will get your students looking descriptive language and adjectives to describe the world around them through an acrostic poem. They will look at adjectives and other descriptive techniques to describe autumn before writing their own acrostic poems. Part 1: Get the students to go outside to find the most interesting leaf they can. They will then stick the leaf in the middle of the worksheet and write adjectives / descriptive phrases around the outside to describe the leaf. Part 2: This lesson is all about thinking of adjectives and descriptive phrases to describe Autumn. They must find somewhere outside (ideally around trees) and use their descriptive language techniques to describe the changes happening in autumn. Part 3: It’s now time for the students to write their acrostic poems using the descriptive language they’ve been looking at. This pack contains a few different poem templates for them to use. This is a great outdoor activity to get students practicing column addition both with and without decimals as well as practicing their measurement skills. They will measure two items that they find outside before adding the lengths together using column addition in the space provided on the activity sheets. This resource has three levels of challenge. Measure to the nearest whole number Measure to the nearest mm (tenth) Measure three items to the nearest mm. For this activity provide each child with a tape measure or ruler and our activity sheet. This is a great outdoor experiment that demonstrates how the earth is kept warm enough for life (as well as global warming) through the greenhouse effect. They will carry out an experiment comparing the difference in temperature between the air in a glass jar compared to the air outside of the jar. This demonstrates the effect the greenhouse gases have on the Earth. They will go onto think about what happens when we add to the greenhouse gases and the effect this has on the Earth’s temperature. **Equipment needed: **tall jar, 2 x thermometers, 2 x pieces of white card, timer, sunshine & an activity pack. Teaching Structure: Ask the students how they think the Earth is kept warm. Explain that there are gases in the atmosphere that trap the warming radiation in and keep the Earth warm. Explain that they are going to demonstrate this process by looking how the air warms up in a glass compared to the air outside of the glass. Get the students to complete the method sheet. Place 2 pieces of white card on the floor in a sunny spot (to keep the floor variable the same). Put the jar with a thermometer in on one piece of card and put the lid on (if the lid is opaque put the jar upside down). Place the other thermometer on the other bit of card. Record the temperature of both thermometers at the decided intervals and record the results in the table. Complete the discussion questions and evaluation sheet. This Halloween get your students drawing all of their favourite Halloween pictures while thinking about scaling up and measuring. For this activity students will use chalk to draw Halloween themed pictures on your playground using a specified measurement or scale to work to. It’s great at allowing students to practice using different equipment, measuring accurately, as well as scaling up. This pack contains two levels of differentiation. Diff. 1 - Students will use the measurements given to draw the images the correct size. Diff. 2 - Students must measure the images on the sheets and scale them up using the given scale before using chalk to draw the onto the playground. This cloud diary is a fantastic way to introduce students to weather forecasting as well as getting them outside and observing the changes in the weather each day. Briefly explain how clouds are formed, linking it to the water cycle. Tell your students that they will go outside each day and see what clouds they can spot (using the cloud ID sheet) and record their results in the table. You could talk about the kind of weather we would expect to see with each of the different cloud types. They may start to make their own predictions about the weather. Before you get the students to do their diary, it’s worth looking at the weather forecast to try and choose a period with varied weather. This is a great resource to introduce or recap rhyming that can be used in a variety of ways. This pack contains 32 rhyming pairs with visual prompts on each card. **Outdoor Activity – **Rhyming pairs hunt (whole class or small groups). Cut out and laminate the cards. Hide them around your outdoor space. Get the students to go find as many rhyming pairs as they can. To extend this activity you could get them to write a short poem or sentence using the rhyming pairs that they’ve found. **Memory Pairs **(in pairs or small groups). Put the cards face down spread out on the table or floor. Taking it in turns, the students will flip over two cards. If they find a rhyming pair they take the cards and have another go, if not then the cards get turned facedown and the next player tries to find a pair. **Match The Pairs **(individual or pairs). This is a very simple but effective activity where students will simply match the cards with their correct rhyming pair.

Outdoor fall PSHE lesson. “Trees are about to show us how lovely it is to let things go.” Trees in autumn are a great metaphor when thinking about how good it can be to let things go be it bad habits or forgiving those that have been mean to us. This is a great PSHE lesson to do this autumn where your students will think about what they would like to let go. Talk to your students about what they may want to let go this autumn and leave behind them. Maybe they could let go saying mean things, not sharing, not letting others join in a game, or forgive somebody who has upset them. Once they’ve thought about four things they can let go get them to record them on the activity sheet (one per leaf). Once they’ve completed the sheet get them to go outside and find four big leaves from the ground and write the four things they are going to let go.
