A full workout on long multiplication - starting with multiplying 3 numbers by a 2-digit number and progressing to 4 digits multiplied by 2-digits. Exercise provides a 15 question workout that focuses greatly on the 6,7,8 and 9 times tables and tests pupils’ handling of larger numbers from the 20s to the 90s. Two starter exercises for warming up the word - a good starter for when children come in first thing in the morning - can be continued as the morning exercise throughout the week. 1st exercise = 48 synonyms to be matched. 2nd exercise = 48 antonyms to be matched. Words vary in difficulty and demand on prior vocabulary knowledge so will suit children of differing abilities. Good opportunities for discussion and use of thesaurus if needed.

A reading comprehension resource suitable for years 5 and 6. The story is a four page short spooky storyin keeping with the Halloween time of year. The reading paper is accompanied by a 2 page comprehension that has a mixture of questions ranging from inference, retrieval, true/false and fact/opinion. The text can be used for either group guided reading, whole class guided reading or individual independent reading. It is also a good resource in that its questioning is aligned to the style found in year 6 reading SAT papers. In terms of GPS and story preparation, the story text can also be used to identify different features as it uses a broad variety of the following: subordination coordinating and subordinating conjunctions dialogue simile multi-clause sentences instances where semicolons are used to demarcate main clauses Answers are enclosed in the package for ease of marking.

An exercise children can do in pairs, groups or individually based on identifying subordinate clauses and conjunctions. I find that children often get confused when asked to underline either clauses or the conjunctions. This is a good exercise to get them used to what the vocabulary is referring to.
