It contains full resources needed to teach this book to children in year 3 and 4. It includes a learning journey, possible weekly lesson plans, a PowerPoint which introduces each session and differentiated resources to support the learning journey. Each session is focused on learning objectives from the Hampshire reading and writing phase assessments. Aspects included are diary writing, firework and volcanic landscape descriptions, character comparisons and journey mapping. The middle section of the learning journey diverts from the book and changes the focus to non fiction texts. This includes a little science focus on how to make your own volcano and culminates in a geographical focus whereby the children create a factfile based around the formation of volcanoes I would be grateful for any positive feedback once you have downloaded and reviewed the resource.

PLEASE COULD YOU LEAVE FEEDBACK AFTER PURCHASING :-) This unit encompasses both written and comprehension skills, but particular focus is given to developing children’s descriptive writing. They are encouraged to analyse sections of the book to see how Michael Morpurgo builds tension in his writing. The children have a chance to explore how characters are thinking and feeling with the use of Hot Seating. They study photos and video clips of jungles to inspire their written descriptions. They learn about using ‘show not tell’ to infer how characters are feeling. The unit includes three powerpoints: Modal Verbs, Adding Subordinate Clauses and Descriptive Sentence Making. The culmination of this unit involves planning and writing a ‘hunter’ piece based on the structure of Chapter 10. The children are also given the opportunity to replicate the skills they have developed in this piece of writing in an assessment task based on the short tale ‘Something Fishy’, which can be found on the Literacy Shed. Although my unit contains 8 weekly plans, I was not working a 5 day week. It is, however a fairly extensive unit which has enough material to last 4/5 weeks. It was very worthwhile making it so lengthy, as I found that the children made major progress in their writing.
