9-1 Edexcel History Learning/Topic Placemats for the Medicine Through Time course The full range of placemats for the Medicine Through Time course include: Topic 1: Medieval Medicine Topic 2: Renaissance Medicine Topic 3 1750-1900 Topic 4: Twentieth Century onwards (The reverse side of the placemat remains the same throughout this study unit). These interactive learning placemats were designed to meet the challenges of the new 9-1 GCSE. They build upon the successful Medicine Through Time Placemats that I previously designed (and which received 5* reviews by all who have purchased them up to the time of launching these new materials – see: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/9-1-edexcel-gcse-history-of-medicine-place-mat-question-structure-11627611 ). The new placemats have been identified as best practice during a ‘Challenge Partners’ review as well as being identified as best practice by other History teachers on the Olevi ‘Outstanding Teacher Programme’. The new design learning placemats support both teachers and students in addressing the: a) dramatic increase in the curriculum content needed for the different units b) support the need for increased literacy demands c) help students become familiar and more confident in recognising the correct response needed for the unprecedented number of different question styles The placemats are designed to be double sided. One side focuses on the CONTENT: providing an overview of key knowledge and understanding needed (this will change for each topic area within this GCSE unit). Every placemat across the GCSE range is designed to encourage greater understanding of: 1. Historical Context - through timelines, picture prompts and key words 2. Awareness of the ‘big picture’ so students can see how individual lessons fit into the unit and make clearer links between prior and future learning – through ‘Big Picture’ questions. 3. Better Literacy – through selected ‘language for learning’ vocab box. 4. Memory prompts to support revision – through the use of carefully selected images. 5. Increased awareness of metacognition – through PME (Progress, Monitor and Evaluation Time) questions to encourage students to deconstruct their learning and identify key factors (eg. Social, economic, political) or key individuals and make links between features. A pictorial metacognition man with 5 question prompts will support student reflection. 6. A confidence thermometer is also included as a prompt to identify student confidence in the topic. The reverse side contains guidance on EXAM TECHNIQUE through: 1. Identifying the nature of the question styles for each GCSE Unit and the allocated marks available 2. Examiners levelled mark schemes 3. Support writing frames with generic sentence starters

David Starkey - Magna Carta - Worksheet to support the BBC TV Documentary We take our liberties for granted. They seem absolute and untouchable. But they are the result of a series of violent struggles fought over 800 years that, at times, have threatened to tear our society apart. On the frontline was a document originally inked on animal skin - Magna Carta. Distinguished constitutional historian David Starkey looks at the origins of the Great Charter, created in 1215 to check the abuses of King John - and how it nearly died at birth. He explores its subsequent deployment, its contribution to making everyone - even the monarch - subject to the rule of law, and how this quintessentially English document migrated to the North American colonies and eventually became the foundation of the US constitution. Magna Carta has become a universal symbol of individual freedom against the tyranny of the state, but with ever-tightening government control on our lives, is it time to resurrect it? Starkey has a special encounter with an original Magna Carta manuscript at the British Library, one of only four from 1215 to survive. He also examines other unique medieval manuscripts that trace the tumultuous history of Magna Carta, the Article of the Barons listing their demands in June 1215, and the papal bull declaring Magna Carta null and void less than two months after it was sealed. Written as an independent/enrichment/ independent learning activity for GCSE and A Level students the resource follows the documentary with a series of data collection and analytical tasks. As trade blossomed between Christians and Muslims and the Mongol hordes arrived from Asia, a saintly French king - afire with crusading zeal - and the most remarkable Muslim leader of the Middle Ages fought for ultimate victory in the East. KS3 learning place mat on the British Empire - but could be easily adapted to any topic. Students are supported to place their learning each lesson within it's wider historical context and appreciate the 'big picture'. The place mat contains useful word lists, picture prompts and links assessment directly to the new 9-1 GCSE style Questions - in this case - Edexcel Weimar and Nazi Germany Unit 3 questions. The first two slides form the A3 place mat which includes the assessment questions and the final two slides provide support for the judgment 'essay' question as well as a 'mid activity' peer feedback sheet, encouraging AfL with impact. While this resource has been based on the British Empire, it could be easily adapted for any KS3 topic with generic grade boundary descriptors.
