This lesson examines the Aztec culture, the arrival of the Spanish Conquistadors and the ransacking of Tenochtitlan.
It includes an information hunt, video with questions (link provided for youtube) and discussion.
It is intended to sow some seeds of knowledge for Year 7, to aid future GCSE. If you are teaching about Renaissance era explorers you will see I have several other lessons available.

This lesson is intended for after a study of the weapons of World War One. Students will look at the main types of defences and what would counter them. Students will then plan their own section of trench with only a limited number of defences. This will force the more able to justify their choices. The game then involves a fun end where they see if they survive attack from their partners.

A lesson looking at attempts to kill Adolf Hitler with a focus on the famous Staffenburg plot and tasking the students with planning their own idea, but you go around and point out the holes in the plan to make them refine their thinking.
This lesson can be used at either KS3 or GCSE study.

This lesson look at the creation of the two groups, the reasons, roles and consequences of each.
It goes on to discuss the arms race; the leaders Khrushchev and Eisenhower and the policy of M.A.D.
If you have never done linking hexagons before they take a little while. Allow 15 minutes as a long plenary for them.

Looking at the types of health care providers in the Medieval/ Middle Ages era.
It then goes on to look at hospitals in particular the Hotel Dieu and St Bartholemew’s.
Attack the source works really well as an activity but it takes a while due to all of the cutting and sticking.

Here is a lesson investigating the death of Emily Davison and students through multiple sources decide for themselves if she was an accident or martyr.
The source sheets I cut up and put in to envelopes so that each pair/small group has a pack of evidence to work through.
Most of this is just polished up and updated. It includes a differentiated work sheet for LAP.
It has used some old resources from other authors and I thank them for their contribution.

A lesson explaining the Spanish attempted invasion during the reign of Elizabeth I in 1588.
This lesson is intended for GCSE History (Edexcel) on Early Elizabethan England. It could easily be adapted for other boards or key stages.
It covers the battle in several stages and the students move sweets around a map (and eat them).
I hope you enjoy it. I have animated the slides and made it as fun and engaging as possible.
I have used a card sort given freely from another teacher who shared on a facebook group (I added a less able version) and the plenary is from Jivespin's website, they are made using Halftone in Ipad (a useful app, worth getting). Here is a lesson as part of a study for Year 9 of key events from the Cold War.
For average and more able there is a reading comprehension task, for weaker groups a storyboard. The reading is a combination of History.com and a BBC article.
I have also attached at the end of the Powerpoint a slide of information I found in another users lesson which might be useful for the weaker ones too.
At the end we look at plots to kill Castro as part of Operation Mongoose. For a longer lesson you could have some fun planning your own attempts.

A lesson for Year 9 that discusses life in Berlin, the Berlin Wall and some of the best escapes that were made during the Cold War.
This lesson has an element using Elton John's Nikita, to help students consider life in a divided city.
The main task involves reading about then planning your own escape from USSR held Berlin. It works best with some music from The Great Escape.
At the end if you have time remaining, the end of the wall is discussed and there is a video to watch.

This lesson covers the Checkpoint standoff, Kennedy and his Berliner speech and a few other bits.
For the domino plenary I get them to do it in pairs. First to finish gets a prize, mix them up, find a new partner and do it again faster.
To differentiate the consequences print them on two colours. Give the simpler ones to low ability and both sets to middle and higher ability.
