This is a Functional Skills English - Entry Level 3 Reading Revision Test. It is best taught while the pupils are studying Romeo + Juliet around the time of the Capulet Ball. We at Engage Education create Functional Skills and Entry Level resources to be taught with GCSE recommended literature.
This is a selection of twenty Functional Skills resources that can be used when teaching Romeo and Juliet. They include a selection of reading and writing activities designed for pupils to use to both improve their functional skills in literacy and to revise for exams.
These resources are designed to use with the play. Being able to still teach literature while doing functional skills is fantastic. It is more engaging for both the students and the teacher.

This is a Functional Skills EL1 reading activity. It consists of 2 texts with comprehension questions. It is best taught while studying Romeo + Juliet, before or after the story’s duels. This resource contains two functional skills writing activities with instructions for the pupils to follow. The tasks could be used for either Entry Level 3 or Level 1 with the pupils’ outcome determining their level. You could ask the pupils to plan their work before writing if you wish.
The first text asks pupils to write a letter to the local council applying for permission to host a bonfire night. In the second task, the council has asked the students to write an informative text to schools describing a celebration or festival and its historical or religious significance. Students can choose real celebrations and write about them and you may also want them to research the chosen topic as they plan their text. Alternatively you may allow pupils to invent their own celebration, adding some imagination to the functional task.

It is an excellent resource to help prepare your pupils for exams. You can use the resources as classroom activities, revision exercises or as homework.
This presentation is to be used when delivering a session to the whole school on how to mark written work. It explains the value of good marking and feedback. It presents different forms of marking and feedback and it explains what is required to make marking effective. Advice is given on what to mark on a written text and what not to mark, so that marking is effective and does not demotivate the student. It then introduces ‘live’ marking and explains how staff can do this successfully in lessons. This then leads to a marking activity where staff put these ideas into practice while marking four examples of pupils’ work. After this activity, the texts are displayed on the presentation for a feedback session. The final part of the presentation is about what should happen after marking, with advice given on how to follow up ‘Next Steps’ and ‘Literacy Targets’ by giving the pupils ownership of their own progress.
This presentation can be adapted to include your own school’s writing marking code and policy.
This unit of work is an extension of the ‘All About Me’ theme. It is about settings in your life, which could include places like rooms, parks, settings of clubs or places pupils regularly visit. There are reading, writing and speaking and listening activities in the unit. The reading and writing lessons are differentiated. The lessons in this unit include:
Look at pictures of settings and complete tables to describe them.
Read about settings from other people’s lives and complete a profile about them.
Have a group discussion with other pupils telling them about the setting you have read about and taking notes on the settings they tell you about.

The Ultimate Writing Championship is a scheme of work designed to both improve pupils’ writing skills and to raise their writing engagement. There are 4 stages in this series, beginning with the very basics like writing on the line and leading up to higher level skills such as using metaphors and punctuating speech.
In each stage, there are a series of challenges. Each challenge is represented by a character who the pupil is write fighting against. These challenge fighters have names like Nikolai Onaline and Comma McGregor. It is the pupil’s goal to complete the challenge and win the contest. These challenges focus on 1 or 2 writing skills and the pupils are graded on these skills alone. For example, if the skill assessed is using varied sentence openings, they will lose the match if they use no varied sentence openings, draw if they use only 1, win on points if they use 2-3 and win by knockout if they use 4 or more. The pupils will then add their result to their challenger series record. In each stage, once the pupil has successfully completed all the challenges (or the teacher feels that they have mastered the level), they can attempt to win the Stage Title by write fighting against the stage champion. This is a writing task in which all the skills at that level are assessed and the pupil has to score a certain total of points to win the belt.
Once the pupil has won the title, you can reward them with a certificate and/or title belt and add their name to the Hall Of Fame. They can defend the title by completing the stage title match challenge again. They can now count the number of successful title defences they have had. Once they have successfully defended the Stage title many times, they have completed that stage and can move onto the next stage.
Pupils can also compete for Stage Tag Team Titles in a tag team, writing together with other pupils and/or members of staff.
The texts the pupils write are supposed to be short, except when the pupils work at the higher levels. The topic of the texts is up to the pupil or staff. They can be about anything. They could be about something to do with the lesson (including subjects other than English), or it could be left up to the pupil themselves. The fact that the pupil is assessed on only a specific skills, means that they themselves focus on that skill and improve in that area.
The U.W.C scheme can be used in literacy hour lessons, as a stand-alone lesson, or as extension work. It can be used in English lessons or in other lessons around the school, therefore promoting literacy across the curriculum. Pupils can spend some time writing about what they have learned in history for example, at the same time attempting a U.W.C challenge. It is also a good way of giving pupils the opportunity to work on their individual writing target around the school, matching their target to the appropriate challenge.
Pupils love winning titles and all pupils can win one, especially if they work in a mixed-ability tag team. Many school award pupils title belts that they are allowed to parade around the school after winning or defending a title. The U.W.C scheme raises writing engagement with pupils who normally do not enjoy writing because they do enjoy winning and therefore achieving.
The Ultimate Writing Championship scheme was predominately aimed at raising boys’ writing engagement with its links to combat sports. However, its popularity with girls means that there is now a Women’s Division of the U.W.C. We hope that more pupils and teachers benefit from the expansion of our series and enjoy write fighting.

This lesson is the first in a series of lessons for the Roald Dahl novel ‘Fantastic Mr Fox’. It has a variety of tasks, leading towards the pupils writing about the farmers. There are visual writing help sheets for pupils who require more support and a challenging extension activity that is aimed at building the pupils vocabulary.
This resource is best taught after the pupils have read or listened to the first four chapters of Michael Morpurgo’s ‘Private Peaceful’. It contains comprehension exercises regarding the character development of some main characters in the first four chapters. It also deals with the theme in Chapter 4 of ‘An Amazing Event’. In Chapter 4 the kids see a yellow aeroplane and meet its pilot. Pupils are asked to list amazing events from their lifetime and ones they have lived witnessed, before they plan then write about witnessing an amazing event. also included, is a presentation that accompanies the lesson. It can be used with the activities in the lesson, as a starter, a plenary or it can lead to further speaking and listening activities.
Here are the main activities in this unit:
• Listen to/read the 4th chapter of the novel.
• Complete the comprehension challenge regarding 4 characters in 4 chapters.
• Make a list of any amazing events that have happened in your lifetime or that you have witnessed.

This is an Entry Level 1 Functional Skills reading activity related to Christmas. It consists of 3 reading texts with comprehension questions. The first text gives advice on how to make Christmas dinner. The second text is an advertisement for Santa’s grotto. The final text is a kid’s demanding letter to Santa The texts and questions are used to help the students improve their Functional Skills reading. It can be used as a class whole lesson activity, homework and is ideal for exam revision.

Organisation Of The Peer Observation Programme:
• Teachers agree to complete a peer observation.
(More than one teacher can observe one member of staff)
• A meeting between the staff involved is held before the observation in which the time of the observation and the lesson focus is decided.
• The teacher being observed plans the lesson with the teaching and learning focus in mind.
• The lesson is observed with the observer completing the relevant peer observation form.
• The teachers hold a post-lesson discussion, both completing the details on the observation form and discussing the lesson focus in detail.
• The observer completes their peer observation record chart and shared it with the SLT.
• The number of peer observations required in a year is decided by the SLT, but staff may wish to conduct more observations than this.
