An APP / BLP sort of lesson where students are asked to design a zoo, they need to take make sure that animals have enough space and have to design the shape of the enclosures. Involves area and perimeter as animals which make the most money need bigger enclosures but the fencing costs money so they need to try to reduce area to perimeter ratio. All you need is a few sheets of squared paper for each group to degin their zoo on (3 or 4 should be plenty) and then they compete to make the best looking zoo which makes the most money.

A quiz i use when i start teaching adding fractions. There are groups of objects to be added together, e'g 2 fish and 3 fish is 5 fish. Then pictures such as 2 fish and 3 pigs, to add these another name is needed we, this links with the idea to add things the name needs to be the same, so with fractions the denominators need to be the same.

A PowerPoint with a set of cards with fractions on which can be arranged to make sums, two fractions, then two equivalent fractions with common denominator, then the answer. Students have to try to find as many sums as possible by using all the cards.

Students have to decide how many ways the judges can decide to line up their remaining acts for the next live show, has answer and little explanation.

An investigation where students have to look at the area of right angled triangles whose height is twice the base. Nice little activity for a higher ability group or good activity to talk about how to carry out a investigation with a weaker group.

The main activity of the lesson is to find how many sweets everyone in springfield ate if they were all given a bag of 24 sweets. A little starter on division and some animations showing how to split piles of sweets into given fractions. I used this with bottom set year 7 to start fractions and they liked it especially as i gave them all 24 skittles to help them practise ( i told them the 'S' stood for springfield).
