I specialise in general science resources for KS3 and KS4 and biology for KS5. I try to make my resources suitable for non-specialists and teachers new to the subject, by including answers to any questions and full step-by-step explanations. I love flashcards and try to make a set for each unit I deliver. I am in the process of upgrading these to colour coded (differentiated) sets. All newly added resources will have a remote-learning version too (just in case :-))

Osmosis lesson AQA GCSE Biology Cell biology

Used as an introduction to osmosis for a high ability year 9 group - but can be tweaked for lower ability and revision. Used as a freestanding lesson before attempting the AQA required practical on osmosis. Lesson contains a 10 minute video by the wonderful 'Amoeba Sisters' but I've made my own question sheet for the students to answer as the video is playing (answers on the Power point). You will want to change the starter to suit your own group. If you don't need a complete lesson there's a little worksheet included where students have to show which direction the water would move (net movement) for six different concentrations. Please rate this resource if you have found it useful - if not, comments on how to improve it are very welcome.

British science week KS3 2 lessons Plastics The problem with plastics plus practical casein plastic

This is a series of two lessons for British Science Week. The first is a theory lesson which looks into the environmental problems with plastic. There is a 7 minute video from Plastic Oceans - with a question sheet for students to listen for the answers as they’re watching. I’ve set this up with a workbook for students to complete, so it’s separate from their usual books. (please remove our school logo from the workbook and insert your own) There is an associated homework. Lesson 2 is a practical - Making plastic from milk In Powerpoint 2 I’ve mentioned a poster competition. If you’re downloading this after April 2018 you will want to delete this section as the competition will be closed.

We are following the Activate 1 (New 2016) book. This is the lesson I created to deliver lesson 5 Gravity. You are purchasing the Powerpoint only which I made, but I have included the worksheets I used in the lesson to make it easier for you. If you like this lesson I will be putting all of the lessons from the first unit in a bundle, complete with revision resources for the end-of-unit test. All of the money received from sales is spent on resources for students

BTECH Applied Science - unit 12 LOA Investigate different types of diseases and infections

This is a set of five Powerpoint presentations which covers 10 lessons. It breaks down the assessment criteria into manageable chunks with instructions on which parts to complete in each session. It should help to keep the students on-track, so no-one falls behind. The presentations should be printed off and given to the students (or emailed to them) so they can use them to guide their own study.

Heating curves (boiling lesson) 5.1.4 Activate 1 Matter unit KS3 year 7 suitable for non specialist

(1)
This is lesson 4 of the Activate 1 Matter unit. The content covered in the book is very simple, so I’ve expanded this to include plotting a heating curve. Included is a powerpoinr presentation which can be delivered by a non-specialist if necessary as all of the answers are included for each session. A literacy support sheet is included for SEN support, as well as activities.

Girls' nurture group, pastoral intervention session 2 Managing ups and downs

This is the second of a set of 10 weekly interventions to work through with a group of vulnerable girls. Aimed at those quieter students who slip under the radar and are struggling to settle in and make friends. They may have anxiety around school and poor self esteem. The content of the whole course is: How it feels to be a teen Navigating the ups and downs of life Focus on feelings Barriers to happiness Increasing positivity Hopes and dreams Letting go Self-esteem and how to increase it Life without limits Celebration This resource is ‘Navigating the ups and downs of life’ - I will add the other resources each week as I deliver them. You will need access to a game of snakes and ladders for this session

This is the first of a set of 10 weekly interventions to work through with a group of vulnerable girls. Aimed at those quieter students who slip under the radar and are struggling to settle in and make friends. They may have anxiety around school and poor self esteem. There is a starting/end questionaire so schools can assess how much difference their intervention has made. The content of the whole course is: How it feels to be a teen Navigating the ups and downs of life Focus on feelings Barriers to happiness Increasing positivity Hopes and dreams Letting go Self-esteem and how to increase it Life without limits Celebration This resource is ‘How it feels to be a teen’ - I will add the other resources each week as I deliver them. There is an online video included in this resource which is not my own but is available on youtube. Any ‘how it feels to be a teen’ type video would suffice here as it is a prompt for discussion.

Revision flashcards C1 Atomic structure AQA chemistry GCSE

This is a set of 54 double sided flashcards (print double sided, flip long edge) on the atomic structure unit. I have colour coded them (blue = easiest, green = harder, red = hardest), so you can differentiate by asking different groups to focus on learning different colour groups. I’ve made these for my year 9’s end of unit test, but I will also be using them with my year 11s for revision.

Specific Heat Capacity theory (ideal for non specialists) prior to required practical AQA GCSE

I am a non specialist, and I really struggled with SHC. I needed to plan my own lesson from the text book and break it down into simple steps. This lesson is all of the information on specific heat capacity in the AQA text book, building from first principles. All of the questions asked in the powerpoint have the answers on the next slide. It worked a treat with my high ability year 9s as a theory lesson prior to completing the required practical.

Homeostasis AQA Biology GCSE

This is the Introduction to Homeostasis lesson I made for my year 10s as a gentle introduction to the topic. It includes a link the the Amoeba Sisters video on the topic, but I’ve included a sheet of questions students should try to answer while the video is on so they don’t switch off.

Christmas science quiz Activate year 7 (or 8 as revision)

This quiz is based on four Activate units: Matter (Chemistry) Cells and Movement (Biology) Electricity (Physics) Forces (Physics) These four rounds have five questions in each. There are also rounds on general knowledge of events this year and a picture round. The quiz lasts around 30 minutes at a relaxed pace - suitable for either individuals or teams.

AQA Activate 1 (2016 edition) Unit 2: Electromagnets 29 flashcards KS3 (year 7)

These are 29 flashcards (print double sided - flip on long edge) for the Activate 1 (2016 edition) book Electromagnets: Potential Difference and Resistance. I have updated these to colour-code them for differentiation. Blue spotted questions are the easiest, then green spotted questions. Red spotted questions are the most difficult. There is a sheet which explains how to use the flashcard five tick method.

Making animal cells using plasticine and petri dish KS3 Year 7 Biology Activate

This was an additional lesson in our scheme of work for the cells and movement unit. A small group of year 7 students completed this activity to consolidate their work on cells as they struggle to complete writing activities. This is a more ‘hands on’ way of learning the material so is most suitable for lower ability students and SEN. Not really an activity for high ability. Could be a fun activity for a science club. Need petri dishes and plasticine in a variety of colours.
