I share original PowerPoints, worksheets and SEN/EAL booklets that I created while training to become a Science Teacher. I have continued to use these resources successfully during my 3 year teaching career. My resources include a full lesson plan in the description (40-50 minutes) to guide other trainees and PGCE students. I received an Outstanding grade at the end of both placements, where I used these resources. Resources are for KS3 Science, PSCHE, GCSE Biology, Chemistry and Physics, A Leve

Contains: structure of the heart, name of major vessels and chambers, oxygenated and deoxygenated blood, animations showing path of blood flow on both sides of the heart
Image warning: Contains photographs of a lamb’s heart (from real classroom demonstration) for comparison with diagrams of the heart, making this resource ideal for remote learning during Covid-19 or a lesson where you are unable to do the actual demonstration.
Suitable as a stretch and challenge lesson for Year 8 / KS3 (this is who I originally created the resource for) but also ideal for Year 10/11 GCSE Biology students as a first or second lesson on the Heart.
Lesson plan
Starter - recap activity on Gas Exchange/Respiration (5 minutes)
Lab safety activity on board with answers on next slide (10 minutes)
Heart Dissection Demonstration - ask a student to play the animation back and forth to show direction of blood flow while you demo the heart (15 - 20 minutes). Interesting things to show: the heart strings (students will enjoy pulling on this/trying to break them), the inside of the aorta (turn this inside out with your finger and ask students why it is mostly white/yellow in colour - fat).
Fill-the-gap worksheet to summarise the names of each vessel, valves and sides of the heart (10 minutes). Answers are on the PowerPoint for self assessment at the end (2-3 minutes).
Contains: effects of smoking, definition of a drug, lung disease and emphysema, smoking during pregnancy, laws in the UK and ethical debate activity
Suitable for KS3 Science / Biology lesson in Health topic, or PSCHE lesson for any age group.
Lesson plan
Starter - Make a list of legal and illegal drugs, teacher uses this as an opportunity to resolve common misconceptions e.g medicines are also drugs (5 - 10 minutes)
Main - Print out Slide 5 or ask students to copy the table into their book, print out Slides 6-10 as information sheets and distribute around class or ask students to complete the relevant section of their table from the slide on the board (20 minutes)
Plenary - Class debate on smoking laws in UK (10 - 15 minutes)
Contains: gas exchange, structure of lungs and alveoli, pathway of oxygen and carbon dioxide, organs in the respiratory system, asthma
Ideal for Year 7 or 8 Science - Health Unit of Work
Lesson plan
Starter - Question and class discussion on breathing (5 - 10 minutes)
Main - Diagrams, videos, memory games, mini quizzes (20 minutes)
Plenary - Fill the gap paragraph on board with answers. Differentiated by traffic light colours for students to choose (10 minutes)
Additional plenary - Label parts of the respiratory system on board (1 minute)
Bundle of 5 recap/retrieval quizzes to be used with Year 12 A Level studying Biological Molecules (AQA Biology).
How to use
Use each 10 mark quiz at the end of each sub-topic (every week or two), allow students 6-7 minutes with no prior revision. If they need extra time, make a note on their page with the number of extra minutes rather than asking them to stop. Can be easily marked by yourself during the lesson - highlight errors and give hints, circle any question numbers that are wrong and return to the students. Track this on an Excel sheet throughout the year. I do not give the students a mark out of 10, as it is more beneficial to encourage them to just focus on the feedback that’s been written down and correct their answers, however I calculate a rough mark out of 10 based on number of mistakes and put this onto my marksheet.
These are focused on AO1 knowledge and recall to help you see whether you need to recap any topics before moving onto the next lesson.
Contains Carbohydrates, Enzymes, Lipids, DNA, Proteins.
PowerPoint and Information sheets for Year 8 / KS3 topic on Alcohol.
Contains: short term and long term effects of alcohol, laws around drinking in the UK and risks of alcohol during pregnancy, followed by a class debate activity.
Introduce lesson (5 - 10 minutes)
Print off information sheets and arrange this as an information/treasure hunt around the classroom (15 - 20 minute independent or group task)
Class debate (10 - 15 minutes)
You can also use the information sheets as a class reading comprehension activity, since I have tailored the text to highlight scientific vocabulary alongside definitions.
Refer to my other resources for a work booklet to go with this lesson, aimed at SEN or EAL students.
AO1 knowledge and recall reading log questions designed to be used alongside the Oxford AQA A Level Biology textbook.
Contains Questions and mark schemes for Inorganic ions, Water, ATP
How to use
Students can either do this as an independent revision activity in class with a textbook next to them, or as a quiz/assessment to check their AO1 knowledge and recall. I use these as a quiz to check that students have been doing their pre-reading from the textbook before a lesson.
Each set of questions will take 15 - 20 minutes max
Students should be able to find the exact answers in the textbook as these questions have been written chronologically according to the textbook pages
Students can self assess with the mark scheme documents at the end (print and hand out after 20 minutes)
Contains: short term and long term effects, alcohol in pregnancy and UK laws on alcohol.
This booklet should be used in combination with the Alcohol lesson slides and info sheet. This booklet is ideal for an LSA/TA to use with a small group of SEN/EAL students. It includes phonetic spellings and summary of key information in condensed format.
Print in colour and fold pages inside each other.
Questions are numbered so you can see which order they go in e.g Key Facts half is the back page of the booklet.
