This is Blossoming Minds’ second set of 10 PowerPoints to help prepare your class for the Phonics Screening Check. I have adapted the bible story to create a descriptive passage for Grade 5 or 6. It is split into three differentiated levels. Higher Ability There is a reading booklet of 3 pages (1132 words), followed by 4 pages of questions (14 questions). The passage is very descriptive and includes some advanced vocabulary. The questions are varied and include finding the meaning of words and phrases, drawing inferences, describing characters, ordering the story, true or false questions and multiple choice tick questions. Middle Ability There is a reading booklet of 3 pages (965 words) followed by 4 pages of questions (14 questions). This passage is slightly shorter and simpler than the higher ability passage. The questions are varied and include finding the meaning of words and phrases, drawing inferences, describing characters, ordering the story, true or false questions and multiple choice tick questions. Lower Ability There is a reading booklet of 3 pages (837 words) followed by 4 pages of questions (12 questions.) This is the shortest, simplest passage, while still challenging the kids. The questions are varied and include finding the meaning of words and phrases, drawing inferences, describing characters, true or false questions and multiple choice tick questions. This is a plan for an assembly on differences. It is easy to follow and requires no resources, so is perfect for using at the last minute! I like leading assemblies that are interactive, engaging and relevant to the children’s lives. This assembly uses a school scenario similar to the story of The Good Samaritan. It involves asking for volunteers during the assembly to do some easy acting, something I always find maintains the whole school’s interest. It concludes with a discussion of Jesus’ parable of The Good Samaritan, which I would tell in just a few sentences, though you can use the link to a clip or read from the Bible. There is also an example prayer/reflection to finish with.

This resource is a plan for 3 lessons on Jesus’s parables to be taught to KS2. The first lesson covers why Jesus used stories/parables to teach lessons. The parables that are covered in the following 2 weeks are ‘The parable of the lost son’ and ‘The parable of the mustard seed.’ The second 2 lessons can be taught in any order and encourage the children to consider how difficult it is to forgive and how Jesus hoped to spread the word of God. The lessons are taught through a variety of mediums, such as watching clips, taking part in storytelling, drama activities, planting a seed and artwork.
