PSHE Road Safety: Drink & Drugs
1 of 3 KS4 or KS5 PSHE lessons on road safety for young drivers. Focusing on drink and drugs, this lesson aims to deliver the following outcomes:
To understand the potential consequences of actions and behaviours on the road, both as a driver and as a passenger.
To explain the possible consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
This resource includes a detailed lesson plan, PowerPoint and student reflection document. We have also converted it in to an independent online activity teachers can forward to students to work through remotely using Microsoft Sway. No additional software is required for Sway and it plays wells on mobile phones, tablets and PC/Mac alike.
The lesson is designed to leave young people with a positive view of driving itself, as well as a realistic understanding of the potential dangers. We want young people to gain a full understanding of the dangers and consequences of their behaviour as drivers and passengers on the road. We want to empower them with the knowledge and skills that will enable them to make informed decisions, but we do not want to deter them from driving.
These resources were created whilst we were unable to deliver our traditional Safe Drive Stay Alive road show either in person or digitally. They have however also been designed so that they can be used to compliment the show as an ongoing consolidation of learning and to encourage behaviour change.
PSHE Road Safety: Distractions while driving
2nd of 3 KS4 and KS5 PSHE lessons on road safety for young drivers. Focusing on distractions, this lesson aims to deliver the following outcomes:
To understand the potential consequences of actions and behaviours on the road, both as a driver and as a passenger
To explain the possible consequences of distractions in the vehicle while driving
This resource includes a detailed lesson plan, PowerPoint and student reflection document. Road Safety in UK during & after Covid 19
Aligned with PSHE for KS3, KS4 and KS5, this is the first of four modules created by DWFRS on road safety in the UK. This module focuses on the importance of Essential Travel during lockdown.
In the current climate, the use of our roads has changed significantly. We have seen an increase of risky behaviour such as speeding and lack of protective equipment by new cyclists. The workbook encourages students to consider the impact of this on the community and of course our NHS which we are all desperately trying to support and protect. We also signpost for other issues like mental health and other safeguarding issues which may be affecting families at home.
Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service have worked to ensure this workbook is:
• FREE for you to use and distribute to your students or other colleagues for home schooling as you feel appropriate
• Aligned with PSHE (encompassing elements from Health & Wellbeing, Relationships and Living in the Wider World)
• A vibrant, interactive workbook your students can complete at home
• Formatted with exercises to complete, an assignment to submit to you and a quiz to test their learning. The quiz uses Microsoft forms. The results will be returned to me and I will forward to the teacher.
• Embedded with mental health exercises and ways to interact with those they live with
• Inclusive of safeguarding by way of signposting

KS4 PSHE Road Safety: Passenger Power
Sponsored by sustainable mobility specialist, Arval UK, ‘Passenger Power’ is a KS4 PSHE lesson which aims to empower young people to challenge risks to their personal safety as a passenger in a vehicle.
The lesson aimed at year 10:
Is aligned with the PSHE Association objectives for Health and Wellbeing and Relationships
Promotes key themes from the UN Sustainable Development Goals and British Values
Addresses common road safety issues (known as the ‘Fatal four’ – Speed, Mobile phones/Distractions, Drink & Drugs and non-use of seatbelts)
Explores the psychology behind peer pressure, brain development and how that is relevant to young people
Provides opportunities for students to create strategies to deal with peer-pressure in an assertive way that will keep themselves and their friends safe
Equips students with the transferable skills to challenge others when they are in any unsafe situation
Includes bespoke animations created specifically for this lesson, with relevant and relatable content
Includes a detailed lesson plan and PowerPoint with all media embedded (please click ‘enable external content’ once the PowerPoint has been downloaded).
For a number of reasons, young people remain one of the most vulnerable group of road users in the UK. As part of our delivery and evaluation of other road safety initiatives, students have told us that they often feel uncomfortable challenging dangerous driving as a passenger. Our hope is that this lesson provides the tools and opportunity to develop the crucial life-skill of responding assertively in these difficult situations.
Module 4: Road Safety during and after Covid 19
Aligned with PSHE for KS3, KS4 and KS5, this is the last of four modules created by DWFRS on road safety in the UK during and after Covd 19. This module focuses on 2 wheelers.

The workbook encourages students to consider the impact of this on the community and of course our NHS which we are all desperately trying to support and protect. We embed mental health exercises and signposting for other safeguarding issues which may be affecting families at home.

To explain the possible consequences of driving at speed and not wearing a seat belt
This resource includes a detailed lesson plan, PowerPoint and student reflection document. KS3 PSHE Road Safety: Independent Travellers
Sponsored by sustainable mobility specialist, Arval UK, ‘Independent Travellers’ is a KS3 PSHE lesson which aims to equip students with the knowlegde and skills they need to identify potential hazards and explain what they can do to help keep themselves safe as they travel independently.
The lesson aimed at years 7 and 8:
Is aligned with the PSHE Association objectives for Health and Wellbeing and Relationships
Promotes key themes from the UN Sustainable Development Goals and British Values
Introduces brain development in young people and the process of good decision-making
Provides opportunities for students to positively influence their peers
Equips students with the transferable skills of identifying hazards and mitigating risk with control measures
Includes bespoke animations created specifically for this lesson, with relevant and relatable content

The transition to secondary school can be daunting for both students and their families alike. Our hope is that this lesson empowers young people with the transferable knowledge and skills to safeguard their own personal safety and lays a good foundation for safe road practices.
