Look no further! Six separate monster-type word mats are included with this download: bug-like, mythical, reptilian, mammal, water and flying. These were originally designed to support children with language choice when writing a defeating/ overcoming the monster story. You can expect to find each back-to-back, A4 mat carefully organised into sections which include verbs and adverbs, adjectival phrases (grouped by feature), sentence examples for children to complete and uses of parentheses.

This easy-to-use resource is perfect for children, aged 7-11, who want to up-level their word choices when writing a fictional piece including the weather. The PDF can be printed back-to-back and has been carefully designed to include six weather types: sun, snow/ ice, rain/ hail, wind, thunder and lightning. You can expect to find an abundance of weather verbs, phrases, example sentences and other uses of figurative language all on a simple print-out! I have used this resource with my Year 6s for many years and have found it extremely helpful - particularly with those that are targeted to reach the expected standard. I hope you find it useful too!

The Characterisation Word Mat is a child-friendly resource that can be used to improve fictional writing. This has been pitched at upper KS2 but would be suitable for younger age groups too. The word mat has been carefully organised into sections based on a character’s behaviour, making it super easy for children to use in their up-level their writing! You can expect to find a variety of ‘show, not tell’ adverbials, movement verbs, adverbs as well as an enormous list of synonyms to replace the words ‘said’, ‘walked’ and ‘ran’. I have found this particularly useful for my Year 6s in reaching the Expected Standard in the five years that I have taught the year group; I hope you find it useful too!
