This very exhaustive and detailed guide contains a lot of information and activities to help Spanish A Level students research reflect about Guillermo del Toro’s film El laberinto del fauno. There are a variety of reading, writing and speaking (role plays) activities, as well as multitude of quotes and shots from the film to support each topic. The booklet consists of 84 pages, and it is divided into the following sections: Introduction - a brief reading activity and a vocabulary section, and a series of warm-up activities to complete before, while and after watching the film, including an analysis of the film’s introduction, a “who said it” activity, short written questions to reflect on key scenes and a guided writing activity to help the students write a review of the film. Characters: reading, speaking and writing activities to explore the different characters and characterisation techniques used in the film. The director’s techniques: the use of allegory, the elements of the fairy tale, the use of colour and the use of different shots and camera angles (camera work). Historical background: four sections to study the historical background against which the film is set: the Civil War, a section about “las dos Españas” and how this concept is reflected in the film, a section about “los del monte” and a section about fascism. This resource contains 18 pages full of information (facts and statistics) covering all aspects of the themes covered in year 1 of the new Spanish A Level course. There are nine pages about Aspects of Hispanic society (three pages about Traditional and moden values, three oabout Cyberspace and three pages about Equal rights) and nine pages about Artistic culture in the Hispanic world (Modern day idols, Spanish regional identity and Cultural heritage). I wrote this resource to help students include enough cultural information to score well in AO4 in paper 3 (the speaking exam), but information included in the resource can be easily adapted to a variety of reading and translation activities.

This document includes a lot of factual information about Spain and other Spanish speaking countries, covering all the themes and sub themes of the new Spanish A level course (AQA specification). The 48-page file (I’ve uploaded a PDF and a Word version) includes three or more pages per sub theme with a lot of figures, statistics, data and examples relevant to that sub theme. Most of the information refers to Spain, as it is the country I know best, but other Spanish speaking countries are also referred to. I first started writing this resource in the weeks leading to the year 13 speaking exam with the objective of providing the students with a single document where they could find a lot of relevant information that they could refer to when discussing the topics in the first part of their exam. I believe that they found it very useful. The information here can also be easily adapted and used in other activities, such as reading activities or translations.
