This file contains a series of activities to study the characters of the film El laberinto del fauno:
Adjectives: match a series of adjectives to the main characters, then write a paragraph about each character using those adjectives.
What’s in a name. Match the names of the main characters to their etymological origin and the characteristics traditionally associated to the name. Then reflect about the importance of this (if at all) in El laberinto del fauno.
Independent research: research Hamlet’s Ophelia and see if any parallelisms can be established with El laberinto’s Ofelia.
Translation practice: translate a paragraph that contains language and ideas form the previous two activities from Spanish into English.
Extension: write a similar paragraph about a different character.
Independent research: find out whether any parallelisms can be established between Ofelia and Don Quijote, another famous character in Spanish narrative renown for his obsession with books.
Characters and quotes. Find a quote (from the list provided) that summarises each character’s personality and/or attitude. Justify your choice.
Role plays: three role plays based on the film.
Relationships: reflect about the relationships amongst the different characters. A list of useful nouns is provided.
Essays: two AS and two A Level essay questions about the characters in El laberinto del fauno.
Checklist: A very extensive checklist for the students to reflect on AO3 and AO4 of their essays.
UPDATE (12/02/19):
This resource now includes a presentation (Powerpoint and Notebook) to support the students, as well as a grammar workheet (five pages) to introduce the use of the subjunctive with verbs of desire).
PLEASE NOTE: this resource is part of a much more comprehensive and more detailed resource, the Pan’s Labyrinth Student Support Guide that can be found on this link:
https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/spanish-a-level-el-laberinto-del-fauno-gu-a-de-estudio-pan-s-labyrinth-student-support-guide-12002448
The guide is over 70 pages long, and a free sample can be found here:
https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/el-laberinto-del-fauno-planos-y-ngulos-de-c-mara-pan-s-labyrinth-shots-and-camera-work-12002490
This resource consists of a booklet with ninety photo cards covering in a lot of detail all three themes of the new Spanish GCSE course: Identity and culture (40 cards), Local, national, international and global areas of interest (24 cards) and Current and future study and employment ( 26 cards).
Each of the cards contains five foundation and five higher questions (colour-coded, using red for foundation and blue for higher), the firsts of which is always “¿Qué hay en la foto?”.
One of the first three questions in the foundation set always requires the use of a tense other than the present (past, future or conditional), whereas the others elicit opinions and additional information from the students. In the higher set, all three time frames are covered, with one of the first three questions requiring the use of a tense other than the present and one of the final two questions requiring references to the other time frame.
The booklet also includes a student-friendly explanation of the requirements of the new speaking exam and a copy of the mark scheme for the photo card.
This resource contains two fact files with a lot of statistics and figures about racist attitudes and legislation against racism in Spain. Each file is followed by three activities that exploit the information in them: a discussion card (for paper 3), a translation and summary question (paper 1).
A twelve page booklet to prepare students for paper 2 (writing) of the new A Level Spanish specification (2018 onwards), specifically focused on Réquiem por un campesino español.
The booklet includes:
a summary of the requirements of the paper
the assessment objectives and mark scheme
two initial activities to “get the students thinking” (20 questions about key aspects of the short novel, and a variety quotes for the students to discuss)
the four essay questions from the AQA sample materials and the two questions form the 2018 exam
a further 18 essay questions (some of them adapted from past exam questions from the outgoing specification), covering a wide range of aspects, to provide the students with plenty of practice opportunities
four pages of useful language to write an essay
a self-assessment check-list for the students to use to reflect on their own work.
Support booklet to help prepare students for the new Spanish AS speaking exam (Paper 3). It includes a summary of the specification and exam requirements, copies of the mark-scheme, sample stimulus cards and a variety of questions to prepare the six sub-themes of the AS paper 3. A second file includes a feedback sheet based on the paper 3 mark scheme for quick, personalised feedback.
This resource includes activities based on the topic of Artistic Heritage in the Hispanic World of the new Spanish A Level course.
The first page includes a lot of factual information (taken from this resource: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-spanish-a-level-year-1-fact-file-aspects-of-hispanic-society-artistic-culture-hispanic-world-11883717). The following pages exploit the information on page one with a variety of speaking, reading and wrting activities: first, a Discussion card about Frida Kahlo that uses the information on page one. It is followed by a translation activity about Velázquez (again, based on the information from page one) and a reading activity (write a 90-word summary) about Goya and Velázquez. Finally, activity five is a creative writing task about Las Meninas.
This booklet contains a detailed overview of the key vocabulary for the new Spanish GCSE. While it is not an exhaustive list, it contains a lot of vocabulary items organised according to each of the themes and topics of the new course and their lexical category.
The booklet starts with an overview of the course and the different themes and topics. This is followed with a section of exam rubrics in Spanish, taken from the AQA specification and from the 2018 exams (all four skills, at foundation and higher level).
The next section includes general vocabulary: asking questions, comparisons, quantifiers, conjunctions, connectives, negatives and prepositions.
The final section includes a page of key vocabulary for each of the topics (therefore four pages per theme) of the course. Each page contains on average ten key nouns, ten key verbs and ten key adjectives on the topic, followed by a blank page for students to add their own vocabulary.
I have uploaded two versions of the booklet: the first version only contains the Spanish words, without the English translation, and it can be used for starter or plenary activities in the lesson. The other one is the full version of the booklet, with the English translation.
A very comprehensive set of resources to study the topic of the weather in Spanish. Suitable for students of all levels, the presentation starts with simple vocabulary activities and little games (Simon says, Battleship, human dominoes) and it builds up from there (weather forecasts, leisure activities in different kinds of weather).
It also includes a range of reading activities to do with the weather and the climate in Spain. Additionally I have included several reading and writing activities about Spanish geography to provide the students with a better understanding of Spanish geographical features (and at the end of the topic they will even believe you when you say that it does indeed snow in Spain; quite a lot, actually!)
This resource consists of a series of reading, writing and speaking activities about the vote in the Spanish Congress (in September 2018) that passed a bill to exhume Franco’s remains from El Valle de los Caídos .
The main text is about the vote itself, about the construction of El Valle de los Caídos and what it represents, the reasons for moving Franco’s remains and what will happen to them in the future.
The activities include exam-like questions, such as finding expressions that mean the same as the words given, changing sentences so that the information in them is correct, a 90-word summary, several questions to answer in Spanish and a paragraph to translate into English.
The last three pages of the resource consist of a “fact file” providing information about Franco’s life and dictatorship, and two speaking cards (theme discussion cards) based on the information in the fact file.
This reading activity is part of the sub-theme “Monarchies and dictatorships”, of the theme “Aspects of political life” of the AQA A Level course.
This is a reduced, simplified and printing-budget friendly of this resource:
https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/spanish-gcse-grammar-booklet-cuaderno-de-gram-tica-11939611
The content of the booklets is very similar and they both provide a very detailed overview of the grammar needed for the new GCSE course, divided into three parts (Theme 1, Theme 2 and Theme 3). Each part has two sections, one devoted to verbs and the other one to other lexical categories. Both books contain a lot of examples and activities for the students.
This version of the booklet takes into account that printing budget can be tight, so I have re formated the original, 62-page booklet, and taken out a few examples, so it is now 37 pages (the last three being verb tables that can be printed separately), but it still contains detailed explanations of a variety of grammatical structures, a lot of examples and a lot of activities.

N.B. - Please ignore the Word preview of the resource - it does not look like that! This is a board game to get English as a Foreign Language to practise their speaking (and mediation) skills.
It is based on games such as Snakes and Ladders, but since I have designed the board, I have explained all the peculiarities in the instructions.
Each time the players roll the dice, they will have to complete a speaking, mediation (explain a graph) or grammar task. The different tasks are:
making a speech on a specific topic.
having a discussion with a partner on a specific topic.
answering a question.
taking part in a role play with a partner.
correcting a common mistake in a sentence.
If the player completes the task correctly they can stay in the box where they’ve landed. If they don’t, they’ll have to go back.
All the resources needed to play the game are included: 24 grammar cards, 24 discussion cards, 24 question cards, 12 role play cards and 12 graph cards.
There are a few special boxed to keep the game more exciting: the lift, that helps the players move forward or backwards a few places; the dice, which allows them to roll the dice again; the field, where they relax for a turn, and the grim reaper, which takes them back to the starting point.
The game is designed for B2 students, but can be easily adapted for other levels.
EDIT: PLEASE IGNORE THE AWFUL PREVIEWS, THE ACTUAL FILES LOOK FINE, AS SHOWN BY THE COVER PICTURE, A SCREEN CAPTURE OF THE BOARD.
This document includes a lot factual information about Spanish and Latin American culture and society, focusing on the theme Aspects of Political Life in the Hispanic World of the new Spanish A Level course.
It provides students with wide range of facts and statistics about the topic, which should be very helpful in preparation for Paper 3 (the speaking exam). The information in the file can also be easily adapted to reading or translation activities.
A very comprehensive set of sentences to translate from Spanish into English.
The full resource is 29 pages long (including title and content pages) and it covers all three themes of the new Spanish GCSE course.
Each theme and each topic is covered in detail with a series of sentences of different level of difficulty, and they provide a good coverage of all aspects of GCSE grammar, with references to a variety of tenses (present, preterite, imperfect, present perfect, conditional, future), and a wide range of complex structures (negatives, comparatives, conditional clauses…).
While I believe that the resource can be used with students of all abilities, it is aimed mainly at foundation students. A higher version of the same booklet can be found on this link:
https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/new-spanish-gcse-spanish-to-english-translations-11958629
A 35 page booklet to help prepare Spanish A Level students for Paper 3 (speaking test). The booklet focuses on the Theme 4 (Aspects of political life), and it contains 18 discussion cards covering “Jóvenes de hoy, ciudadanos de mañana” (6 cards), “Los movimientos populares” (6 cards) and “Monarquías y dictaduras” (6 cards). Each section is followed by a list of 20 questions to encourage the students to further explore the issues covered in the cards.
The cards contain (quite a lot) of factual information about the theme (a lot more than the sample cards from AQA) and three questions, the first one always being “How do you react to the information on this card?”).
The aim of presenting the cards like this is to provide the students with a lot of ideas on what to say about the theme, as well as making them more aware that they always have to discuss the information printed on the card (AO2 and AO4).
The booklet also includes a student-friendly overview of the new specification, an explanation of the requirements of Paper 3, the assessment objectives and the mark scheme for both part one (discussion if a sub-theme) and part two (presentation and discussion of the individual research project) of the paper.
Finally, the booklet also contain three pages of useful language for the test.
Two lessons to prepare Key Stage 3 students to write about their favourite sport. Based on Harry Potter's quidditch, it focuses on opinions, comparisons and tenses, with a translation that the students then use as a template to write their own paragraphs. It also includes a link to a video in French of a quidditch match for those students not acquainted with Harry Potter.
Update: I have now included a PowerPoint version of the main file, converted from the original Notebook file. I recommend whenever possible to use the original version, as the file conversion has changed the layout of some slides and some features work less effectively on Power Point.
This booklet contains 18 discussion cards based on Theme 2 of the new AQA Spanish A Level course (Artistic culture in the Hispanic world).
The cards contain quite a lot of factual information about the theme (a lot more than the sample cards from AQA) and three questions, the first one always being “How do you react to the information on this card?”.
The aim of presenting the cards like this is to provide the students with a lot of ideas on what to say about the theme, as well as making them more aware that they always have to discuss the information printed on the card (AO2 and AO4).
Each section is followed by around 20 questions for the students to research / discuss the topic further.
Finally, the booklet also contains an overview of the A Level course and the Paper 3 exam, as well as a list of useful language for the test.

A set of 13 time-saving worksheets to set quick, simple cover work. Suitable for younger students. Each worksheet includes bilingual vocabulary lists and simple activities (with instructions in English) for the students to complete at their own pace.
This booklet contains twenty four questions that follow the format of the 90-word questions in the new Spanish GCSE writing exam. They cover all three themes of the AQA specification, but can be easily adapted to other exam boards. There are eight questions for each theme, and they can be used in lessons, but also as an easy way to set useful homework activities for the students.
All questions include four bullet points that the students are prompted to cover, and they explicitly require them to include references to three time frames and opinions (as per the AQA mark scheme). When possible, one of the bullet points starts with ‘qué hiciste’, a question which appears in many of the AQA samples and that some students often fail to understand.
UPDATE: A similar resource, focusing on the 150 word questions (higher paper) can be found in this link:
https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/spanish-gcse-higher-writing-practice-150-word-questions-12082077
