Finding Change (From £1, differentiated up to £5/£10.)

(1)
A Smart Notebook file, about finding change from £1. The coins can be moved into the actual hand as required to help the childrens understanding. I can’t stress how helpful the notebook file is to illustrate this. Suitable for years 2-4 I have also included a lesson plan for this particular lesson I was observed on and a large collection of differentiated worksheets.

Understanding the role of the equals sign

I couldn’t find any materials on this when I needed to teach my year 3 class what the equals sign REALLY meant. I have included the lesson plan I used, the 3 differentiated worksheets and a Powerpoint I made. Also have included a homework set of resource sheets (could alternatively be used in class as a reinforcement at a later date.) UPDATE: I have added a more challenging resource for year 3/4

Understanding the role of the equals sign / Missing Number / Box Calculations

(2)
Massive update to my highly popular resource… Found these really hard to find so made my own resources up. I am unsure why they are so scarce as they often come up in SAT tests etc. As I like to call them 'missing box sums’ I have included differentiated worksheets and a smart notebook file to accompany the lesson worksheets. Great for years 3/4 possibly lower ability year 5. UPDATE: Feb 2018: due to the popularity of the previous version of this resource I have added a additional content similar in nature, for example, 'the role of the equals sign.' At this age it is important that children understand (leading onto later years and algebra etc) that ‘Equals’ doesn’t mean ‘the answer’ but is a BALANCE of two equations. There is a lesson plan included here as well I used for an observation during a Numeracy lesson on the topic.

Number Pyramids - Puzzles Year 3/4

A set of differentiated worksheets I made where children have to add the two numbers below to get the final brick of the top of the pyramid. The harder worksheets require inverse operations. Fantastic for an activity relating to how additional and subtraction are linked, or reinforcing the concept.

Subtraction by Adding on using a Number Line - Year 3/4 - Ofsted observed

I am delighted that the conversion from Mac to PowerPoint is now reliable enough to transfer the special effects on this presentation to PC Powerpoint format as well! The animations of the number line are unique and extremely beneficial to the childrens understanding in this method. This lesson has been observed several times by colleagues in the past in my capacity as AST to illustrate how the use of teacher technology can improve maths teaching within a lesson. Starters included… There are also examples of worksheets, here this has always been one of my favourite lessons to deliver and I am delighted I can share it.

Odd and Even Numbers

An interactive Smartboard file I made for year 3/4 for an observation lesson. Tries to get across the idea that knowing the rules for odd and even can inherently help you check your answers! Actually used this again yesterday in a class in Lancashire, worked really well. -Lesson plan -Presentation -Worksheet

Regular or Irregular Polygons - Year 5/6

An extensive set of resources used highly successfully for an observation lesson on whether a polygon is ‘regular’ or ‘Irregular’. Used in a Year 5 class and includes plan, differentiated resources and presentation that are easily adaptable. (Please note I have also included this presentation in MAC Keynote format as well as Powerpoint format for apple users. )

Numeracy Countdown - Unique Effects

(3)
In PowerPoint (Windows) AND Keynote (Mac) format I am delighted to offer a unique and fully editable version of ‘countdown’ in PowerPoint format with theme music, timer, cards that flip etc. Just change the numbers to suit your students. This took a lot of time to make initially in Keynote (Mac) format and I have successfully converted it into PowerPoint. Great as a starter in Numeracy Lessons. Different formats added! 1st Feb 2017 due to comments, PowerPoint formats should be able to use and edit fully now, please email me on daveorritt@mac.com if you cannot access the effects, it may just need a setting changing on your PowerPoint program.

Keynotes - Apple Mac - iPad - Collection of Keynotes written exclusively for KS2 - PART 1

PART ONE of TWO As this is the first time I have shared content in this format (Mac) this is what I use. Please note this is 15 YEARS worth of Keynotes made on the mac originally for years 3 and 4 although many have been used in older classes and are easily adaptable. INVALUABLE for anyone with a Mac that uses it for teaching as these are VERY hard to find. (Why I had to make them as I much prefer Keynote.) These took many many hours to make individually. Many incorporate videos and animations within them and some have been used to achieve outstanding observations. Thats why the file size is so big, For a MacBook user these are fantastic and many should work on iPad too with Keynote. (Although one or two of the animations may be different and I can't 100% promise all will be formatted perfectly from experience.) Keynotes year 3/4 - A Massive collection of all the presentations I have made ORIGINAL in Mac format. Most are self explanatory but have written a few notes of description for some them below to help. Will save Apple users absolutely tonnes of time as I myself use many of these when I go into schools. You really are getting a lot here believe me. (Some written on Keynote '09 so you may want to open on this to avoid conversion.) - Poetry Creating Images Keynote - Used for an outstanding observation 2 years ago, children went on to write their own beach poems based on the content shown. - Haunted house keynote - Fantastic for boys writing to get them enthralled. - Mummification Keynote - Includes video of the mummification process. - Parental Year 4, shows 'how we do things' in Maths. Includes an EXCELLENT countdown starter that can be used with the children also, (really really effective) but illustrates examples of how we teach in Mathematics at that age. Used in a Maths showcase evening at school. Please note these will NOT work on windows computers (PowerPoint) without conversion although an excellent site to convert these files is https://cloudconvert.com/key-to-ppt I have included this particular resource mainly for Apple users. Please VOTE on this resource if you find it useful
