I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to help children understand what they are reading. A simple comprehension activity. There is a simple sentence that will match to one of the three pictures on the cards. The child should use a peg and match them. The peg will help their fine motor skills which in turn will help when they are ready to write. Please note that I have NOT included capital letters on these sentences, the idea behind this is that the children aimed at with these resources are only starting on their phonics journey and will probably not have the skills to recognise all the letters let alone capital letters.

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. The idea behind this resource is to allow children to read the CVC word in the middle of the card. When they have done that, they choose one of the eight pictures around the outside and should put a peg on the correct picture. This shows understanding of what they have read but also helps with their fine motor skills, which in turn will help when they are ready to write.

This resource is for the children to use. The idea was that it would form a part of a display low down so they could access it. In my head it was for initial sounds work as there are words/pictures that are not CVC words on the spinners but I have tried to include as many CVC words as I could so if they are ready to read the words then they can have a go. The resource itself is basically two circles that you split pin together. If you cut the triangle out from the second circle it will allow you to see one of the triangle sections of the first. The split pin allows children to move it around so they can see one picture and associated word with it. It also shows capital letter form and lower case form of each letter.

When a child is learning to read it is important for them to blend each word individually. However, when children are doing this they can forget what they have read already. They have a lot to workout and remember so its only natural. A strategy we use is to ask the child to go back to the beginning of the sentence once they blend a word and read the sentence with fluency and therefore not blending. This is the only way they can remember what the sentence is. This resource is designed to see if they understand what they have read. A very simple sentence has three different pictures under it. They should read the sentence and then use a peg to indicate which picture matches the sentence. The peg idea is to aid their fine motor development and therefore help with handwriting.

I created all these resources to be used in my class when they start in reception. They range from initial sound activities to reading/making CVC words up to reading a simple phase 2 (Letters and sounds) sentence. Lots of these resources allow the child to match the sound or word to a picture. They have been created so the child uses a peg to show which picture is the answer. Using a peg to do this instead of just pointing to it also helps develop their fine motor skills, which in turn will help, when they are ready, to write. There are seven resources included in this bundle so its a saving of £2 if you want to take advantage of this. They are all designed to be used in the children’s enhanced learning time where they can access them independently to show you what their learning has been.

Little Wandle is amazing at helping the top children read fluently. I am finding though, even with the extra interventions daily, that some children just cannot keep up with the pace of the scheme. I made these boards to support children for phase 2. Each separate grapheme has six different boards. On one side of the board has one of six different words, that mostly match the words read in the planning (some were just impossible to find a matching picture) and then each of these sides has six identical pictures. These pictures match to one of the words the child will read. They can then use a peg to place it over this - using pegs helps with fine motor. The second side of the board has a sentence, which uses the word on the previous side. This sentence will match to one of the three pictures under it. Again children can use a peg to indicate which is accurate - a little comprehension work with fine motor skills. I folded each print out in half and then laminated them so children can use them over and over again.

I have created these resources due to having a very creative class. The idea here is to read the sentence given and then draw a picture that matches. This aids comprehension skills as well as fine motor skills to aid writing after. A win win. The children loved the rewards they would receive once they have completed three or more. Teaching through book talk is the best way to help children learn new vocabulary and aid their development in learning the spoken word. We use a lot of books in our setting to help children. One thing I did notice though, is that there are not many phonic resources you can buy that will help children. There is a lot of basic things of course but they are all limited. Is it me, or is one of the hardest things to do when teaching children to learn, is to find sentences they can access to read on a given topic. And of course, if they can read them, they can start to write them soon after too. So I hope this resource helps you as it did my class.

Children love Alphablocks and they are brilliant at helping young kids learn to read. I have found using these instantly recognisable characters in class help children on their initial journey of learning to read. In this game, that children can access independently on the board, children have the word family ‘in’ or ‘ig’ or ‘ip’ endings already shown on screen. This is surrounded by five pictures, so when an Alphablock friend joins the ‘in’ or ‘ig’ or ‘ip’ to make a word, the child needs to read this and click on the correct picture that matches the word. The game indicates if they make the right choice but also if they have done it wrong. They cannot move to the next picture until they click on the correct initial sound. At the end of the game it then cycles back to the beginning so you do not have to keep getting up to restart it too. Its a lovely addition to your enhanced learning environment during literacy lessons or phonics activities.

Phonics should be active and fun. Short activities daily are far better than an extended written activity or a lot of teacher talk. Activities should be designed to allow the children to investigate new sounds. This resource is designed to be a short activity where each child has a different word but the same pictures. They have to read the word and then can place a peg on the correct picture (out of eight) that matches what they have read. If working in a group they can then move onto the next peg board until they complete each one. Or they can be used as an intervention and one child or group could complete them. Initially these were made for a child whose poor fine motor made it hard for him to write but his reading was ok. The pegs were used to aid his fine motor development. But of course, any SEND resources or strategies can benefit many more children within the class. Any child who is beginning to read needs pictures to help form the imagination needed when reading. Young children don’t have that so reading is very much a ‘silent activity’ but with pictures their imaginations will develop until they can picture what they are reading like ‘free readers’ do.

Numicon is a great resource to help children understand the meaning of numbers. The idea with this resource is for children to match the silhouette of ‘buildings’ to the Numicon on the side of the screen. The game then tells them if they got it right as that Numicon forms in the correct position or if they got it wrong using a Batman GIF. This resource was designed for children to access independently while I sit with a guided group during their independent learning time. They can access it via a whiteboard. This Powerpoint/game helps children recognise and learn numbers 1-5.

Sound mats are priceless when helping young children to remember the sounds they need to write in words. A quick reminder of how the sound is formed is usually all it takes for the child to carry on with their work instead of being stuck. I have included the A3 version, which I use as part of a display, the A4 version, which I don’t actually use but I have in the past for visually impaired children so they have a larger copy and the A5 version. Both the A4 and A5 versions I like to laminate back to back so they are both together for the children. Tricky words are also included on each. I also tend to place ‘me’ and ‘my’ together as this is something children do tend to get mixed up with.
